Voices of Feminism Oral History Project Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College Northampton, MA CATHERINE ROMA Interviewed by JOYCE FOLLET June 19 and 20, 2005 Northampton, Massachusetts This interview was made possible with generous support from the Ford Foundation. © Sophia Smith Collection 2006 Sophia Smith Collection Voices of Feminism Oral History Project Narrator Catherine Roma was born in Philadelphia January 29, 1948, the youngest of three children of Italian-born parents. Her mother completed high school and, once married, was a community volunteer. Her father graduated from Princeton University and Temple Law School, but when his own father died young, he left legal practice to run the family’s barbershops in Philadelphia and other East Coast railroad terminals. Practicing Catholics, Catherine’s parents sent her to Germantown Friends School K-12; she remains a Convinced Friend. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Roma earned a BA in music and an MM in Choral Conducting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she became involved in socialist-feminist politics and began organizing a feminist choral group in 1974. Returning to Philadelphia the following year to teach music at Abington Friends School, she organized and conducted Anna Crusis, the first feminist women’s choir in the US. In 1983 she undertook the doctorate in musical arts at the University of Cincinnati, where she founded MUSE, the community chorus she continues to lead. Under Roma’s leadership, MUSE is a vital group in what has become a national and international grassroots movement of women’s choruses. MUSE is recognized as a model anti-racist community organization and a progressive force in Cincinnati politics. -

The Lost Arts Project - 1988
The Lost Arts Project - 1988 The Cherokee National Historical Society, Inc. and the Cherokee Nation partnered in 1988 to create the Lost Arts Program focusing on the preservation and revival of cultural arts. A new designation was created for Master Craftsmen who not only mastered their art, but passed their knowledge on to the next generation. Stated in the original 1988 brochure: “The Cherokee people are at a very important time in history and at a crucial point in making provisions for their future identity as a distinct people. The Lost Arts project is concerned with the preservation and revival of Cherokee cultural practices that any be lost in the passage from one generation to another. The project is concerned with capturing the knowledge, techniques, individual commitment available to us and heritage received from Cherokee folk artists and developing educational and cultural preservation programs based on their knowledge and experience.” Artists had to be Cherokee and nominated by at least two people in the community. Geologic Resources Inventory Workshop Summary Great Smoky Mountain National Park May 8-9, 2000 National Park Service Geologic Resources Division and Natural Resources Information Division Version: Draft of July 24, 2000 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY An inventory workshop was held for Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GRSM) on May 8-9, 2000 to view and discuss the park’s geologic resources, to address the status of geologic mapping by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), various academics, the North Carolina Geological Survey (NCGS), and the Tennessee Geological Survey (TNGS) for compiling both paper and digital maps, and to assess resource management issues and needs. Cooperators from the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD), Natural Resources Information Division (NRID), NPS Great Smoky Mountain NP, USGS, NCGS, TNGS, University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) were present for the two-day workshop. (See Appendix A, Great Smoky Mountain NP Geological Resources Inventory Workshop Participants, May 8-9, 2000) Day one involved a field trip throughout Great Smoky Mountain NP led by USGS Geologist Scott Southworth. Day two involved a daylong scoping session to present overviews of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) program, the Geologic Resources Division, and the on going Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) for North Carolina. Round table discussions involving geologic issues for Great Smoky Mountain NP included interpretation, paleontologic resources, the status of cooperative geologic mapping efforts, sources of available data, geologic hazards, and action items generated from this meeting. Fire Weather Operating Plan For Tennessee 2020 NWS Morristown, TN NWS Nashville, TN NWS Memphis, TN This operating plan will be a semi-permanent document valid January through December 2020, specifying Fire Weather services provided by the National Weather Service in Tennessee. The plan incorporates procedures detailed in the Interagency Agreement for Meteorological and Other Technical Services (found at https://www.weather.gov/media/fire/IA_NWS_Meterological_Tech%20Services_F ire_FINAL.pdf). 1 Introduction Purpose of the Operating Plan This Operating Plan (OP) serves as the official document governing the interaction and relationships between the National Weather Service, and the federal, state and local natural resource and land management agencies or cooperators in Tennessee. Explanation of relationship between OP and MOU This Operating Plan is issued in lieu of a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Weather Service, federal, state, and other agencies that rely on fire weather support. The plan will outline forecast operations and services available to users. This includes products and formats, dissemination and coordination, and the responsibilities of the partners. This Operating Plan will be the governing document for fire weather procedures and cooperation among the following agencies: NOAA National Weather Service TDA Division of Forestry USDI National Park Service USDA Forest Service The Southern Area Mobilization Guide and the National Mobilization Guide further define the relationship between the natural resource agencies and the NWS Incident Meteorologist.
