Historical Marker - S199 - Battle of Monguagon / Michigan Wyandot and Monguagon (Marker ID#:S199) Front - Title/Description Battle of Monguagon On August 9, 1812, Lieut. Col. James Miller and a force of about 600 American regulars and militia moved down Hull´s Trace in an attempt to bring desperately needed supplies from Frenchtown (Monroe) to Detroit. A similar effort had failed at Brownstown on August 5. Near the Wyandot village of Monguagon, American scouts ran into a British and Indian force of about 400 men led by Capt. Adam Muir and Tecumseh. Here’s a taste of the first essay: "It is well known that the Anishinaabeg (Ojibwe, Odawa, Potowatomi, Mississauga, Algonquin, and Nipissing) fought during the War of 1812, the majority siding with the British, although some sided with the Americans. It is also well known that Shawnee Chief Tecumseh was a dynamic and charismatic leader who worked to form a confederacy of Nations to resist American expansionism. The War of 1812 is synonymous with the names Tecumseh, General Brock and Laura Secord. If any other “Indians” are mentioned, it is likely Tecumseh’s brother the Prophet (another Shawnee), Roundhead (A Wyandot), or John Norton (a Scotchman with Cherokee blood and adopted by Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant). Many would be hard pressed to name ten Anishinaabe warriors who fought in 1812. We know that our ancestors fought during this war, and that some died in battle. The majority of the Canadian population, as well as our own people, however, likely cannot name many Anishinaabe chiefs or warriors who fought, which is a shame because the sheer numbers of Anishinaabeg that participated should warrant more attention." Some ethnologists believe the Shawnee descended from the Fort Ancient people. The Shawnees were wanderers, who lived in many places in the south. They became associated closely with the Delaware in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Able fighters, the Shawnees stubbornly resisted white pressures until the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. At the time of the arrival of the European explorers on the shores of the North American continent, the American Indians were living in a network of highly developed cultures. Each group lived in similar housing, wore similar clothing, ate similar food, and enjoyed similar tribal life. In the geographical northeastern part of North America, the principal American Indian tribes were: Abittibi, Abenaki, Algonquin, Beothuk, Cayuga, Chippewa, Delaware, Eastern Cree, Erie, Forest Potawatomi, Huron, Iroquois, Illinois, Kickapoo, Mohicans, Maliseet, Massachusetts, Menominee, Miami, Micmac, Mississauga, Mohawk, Montagnais, Munsee, Muskekowug, Nanticoke, Narragansett, Naskapi, Neutral, Nipissing, Ojibwa, Oneida, Onondaga, Ottawa, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Peoria, Pequot, Piankashaw, Prairie Potawatomi, Sauk-Fox, Seneca, Susquehanna, Swamp-Cree, Tuscarora, Winnebago, and Wyandot. -

It Is Estimated That More Than a Dozen of the Iroquoian-Speaking Tribes That Lived Along the St
It is estimated that more than a dozen of the Iroquoian-speaking tribes that lived along the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes region, prior to the arrival of the French in 1534, referred to themselves collectively as Wendat meaning “villagers.” We are one of these tribes. However, if someone is referencing the Wyandotte as being Huron, they should not classify us as such. The name ‘Huron’ originates from the early French explorers because of a hairstyle called the roach. It was a derogatory name derived from their word ‘hure’ meaning rough or ruffian. The roach was worn atop a mohawk or cleanly shaven head. It was made from thick deer or moose hair and often porcupine quills were also inserted into the bristly cap. When worn by many of the Wendat men, it resembled the thick, bristly hair on the back of wild boars that roamed Europe. Many people assume that the name Huron references a single tribe. The Huron were actually a confederacy of five of the Iroquoian- speaking tribes. The French had a special relationship with the Huron Confederacy, because they controlled a trading network that spanned much of the Great Lakes region and well beyond. This yielded the Huron great power and influence which the French desired in their expansion throughout the Great Lakes region. The founder and oldest nation of the Huron Confederacy was the Attignawantan, who according to oral tradition formed the confederacy around 1400 with the Attingueenongnahac. They expanded, adopting three other tribes into the confederacy; they being Arendaronon, Tahontaenrat, and the Ataronchronon were lastly admitted around 1644. -

Tecumseh, Harrison, and The War of 1812* Marshall Smelser”” Indiana Territory had only twenty-five thousand citizens in 1810. When one reflects that the populations of Ohio and Kentucky combined were more than twenty-five times as great, it will be easily understood that the War of 1812 in the Old Northwest was more their war than it was Indiana’s. Indiana was only a beachhead in the wilderness. The history of the war as it concerns Indiana is more biographical than geographical, more dramatic than analytic. This paper will treat it that way-as a high tragedy involving two able natural leaders. Like all tragedies, the course of its action gives the feeling that it was inevitable, that nothing could have been done to prevent its fatal termination. The story is the drama of the struggle of two of our most eminent predecessors, William Henry Harrison of Grouseland, Vincennes, and Tecumseh of the Prophet’s town, Tippecanoe. It is not easy to learn about wilderness Indians. The records of the Indians are those kept by white men, who were not inclined to give themselves the worst of it. Lacking authentic documents, historians have neglected the Indians. The story of the Indian cun be told but it has a higher probability of error than more conventional kinds of history. To tell the tale is like reporting the weather without scientific instruments. The reporter must be systematically, academically skeptical. He must read between the lines, looking for evidence of a copper-colored ghost in a deerskin shirt, flitting through a green and bloody world where tough people died from knives, arrows, war clubs, rifle bullets, and musket balls, and where the coming of spring was not necessarily an omen of easier living, but could make a red or white mother tremble because now the enemy could move concealed in the forest.
