Now, with the massive influx of money and sheer increase in number of matches played, cricket has become big business. Now like other sports before it (Baseball (the Chicago ‘Black-Sox’ against the Cincinnati Reds in the 1919 World Series), Football (allegations against Bruce Grobelar; lights going out at the Valley, home of Charlton Football club)) Cricket Inquiry Report Page 1 Cricket faces the threat of match-fixing, the most serious threat the game has faced in its life. 2. Match-fixing is an international threat. It is quite possibly an international reality too. Donald Topley, a former county cricketer, wrote in the Sunday Mirror in 1994 that in a county match between Essex and Lancashire in 1991 Season, both the teams were heavily paid to fix the match.     Saleem Yousuf (Pakistan 1982 to 1990) Pakistan hosted the West Indies in 1986-87. Expecting a gruelling Test series, Imran Khan wanted known fighters in his team. Zulqarnain had kept wicket in Pakistan’s previous Test series against Sri Lanka and in the following One Day International (ODI) tournaments. Anil Dilpat was wicketkeeper in the first of two three-day tour games and in an ODI against the West Indies in October 1986. For the second three-day game, just a week before the opening Test, Imran brought in Saleem Yousuf and retained him for the series. Afterwards Imran felt his choice was vindicated: “In Salim Yousuf, Pakistan had found a courageous player and one who could handle a crisis.” When Pakistan toured the West Indies later in 1987-88, Saleem, despite a broken nose from being hit in the face in the first innings, came in at No. 9 in the second and played a vital innings of 28, adding 51 runs, to help set West Indies a testing score at Bridgetown. Wasim Akram considered Saleem “not the tidiest keeper, but he’s one of the bravest batsman I’ve ever seen.” Saleem Yousuf contributed much to Pakistan’s rise to the summit in Test cricket from 1986. Successes against West Indies, and series wins over India, England (twice), Australia and New Zealand meant that when Pakistan and the West Indies met in late 1990 the series was regarded as the unofficial world championship. Saleem played only in the first Test in that 1990 series, finishing his Test career by helping Pakistan take the lead.

Ms Adamson noted that although Australia and Pakistan were fierce competitors on the field, cricket was a unifying passion for the two countries. “Every summer, more than a million Australians play the game, and you see the same enthusiasm here in Pakistan. On every street, in every open space, youngsters are out hitting the ball, grabbing a wicket, being part of the team,” she said. “Pakistan has produced some of the game's true champions: Imran Khan, the best of skippers; Shahid Afridi, who hit more sixes than anyone else in one-day internationals; Sarfraz Nawaz, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, who pioneered reverse swing,” she said. We generate batting partnership network (BPN) for different teams and determine the exact values of clustering coefficient, average degree, average shortest path length of the networks and compare them with the Erd¨os-R´enyi model. We observe that the networks display small-world behavior. We find that most connected batsman is not necessarily the most central and most central players are not necessarily the one with high batting averages. We study the community structure of the BPNs and identify each player’s role based on inter-community and intra-community links. We observe that Sir DG Bradman, regarded as the best batsman in Cricket history does not occupy the central position in the network − the so-called connector hub. We extend our analysis to quantify the performance, relative importance and effect of removing a player from the team, based on different centrality scores. Mehta Experimental Physics Branch, NASA Ames Research Center, California, USA ABSTRACT: Aerodynamics plays a prominent role in the flight of a cricket ball released by a bowler. The main interest is in the fact that the ball can follow a curved flight path that is not always under the control of the bowler. The basic aerodynamic principles responsible for the nonlinear flight or "swing" of a cricket ball were identified several years ago and many papers have been published on the subject. In the last 20 years or so, several experimental investigations have been conducted on cricket ball swing, which revealed the amount of attainable swing, and the parameters that affect it. A general overview of these findings is presented with emphasis on the concept of late swing and the effects of meteorological conditions on swing. In addition, the relatively new concept of "reverse" swing, how it can be achieved in practice and the role in it of bali "tampering", are discussed in detail. A discussion of the "white" cricket ball used in last year's World Cup, which supposedly possesses different swing properties compared to a conventional red ball, is also presented. _TRODUCTION The origins of cricket are obscured and a source of much speculation, but there is some evidence that it was played in England in thel300s. People who do not play cricket (the majority of the human race) know it as a game of childish simplicity. A pleasant game for the beach it seems, but hardly enough to hold the attention of entire nations for days at a stretch.
