I Mark Peart Sodomy Re/Verse i Mark Peart Sodomy Re/verse : Reading and re-writing the sodomitical archive on nineteenth century New South Wales Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Department of English The University of Sydney Supervised by: Associate Professor Kate Lilley A thesis submitted to fulfil requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Year of Award: 2019 Abstract: In “Queer Spectrality” Carla Freccero writes that “queer historicism harbors within itself not only the pleasure, but also the pain, a traumatic pain whose ethical insistence is to ‘live to tell.’” Historical trauma, she argues, appears in the form of the unresolved spectres, as the troubled past made present by their unresolved demands to be made right, in the returners’ demands to be mourned and to impel the process to an as yet achieved historical justice. This thesis is haunted: it is haunted by the minor sodomitical figures of nineteenth century New South Wales who sound relentlessly the conditions of the injustice they experienced, and who speak in the name of the “queer.” In this way I do not so much, or only, look back to history, but I encounter a history that looks back towards my present. If the conditions of state persecution and disciplinary regulation under sodomy laws and general antisodomy rhetoric in this context made “queer” lives less liveable, it is the force of their sodomitical queerness – gender transgressors, racial “abominations,” lumpen class rogues, criminal recidivists, the imprisoned (convict) poor and petty offenders – that speaks back to the still limited, intolerable and in too many cases unliveable conditions of present heteronormative hegemonies. Writing on the state of the antipodean convict colonies in 1832, William Molesworth, the Radical reformer, commented that the convict transportation system “barbarizes the habits, and demoralizes the principles of the rising generation, and the result is… ‘Sodom and Gomorrah.’” In 1879, during the sodomy cases against William Albion (alias Moore, alias Ernest Steele), William Tindall, police constable at Sydney, stated that he found on Albion when arresting him in Sydney’s Hyde Park “a handkerchief” and a “silk turban,” and that “his face was powdered.” Furthermore, when cross examined by the defendant Tindall answered that he had watched Albion in the act, stating, “your posterior was turned towards each man as they came to you in turns.” The leitmotifs in each of these examples index the central tropes that animate the dissertational prose and poetry of this thesis: disciplinary disorder and gender inversion (in the above examples: disciplinary barbarization and demoralization, and the gendered turning of the posterior to the anterior). The central argument of this thesis is that sodomy in nineteenth century New South Wales, as articulated by commentators and lawmakers and as lived by sodomitical offenders, indexes question of reversals, principally in relation to disciplinary penal order and gender order; and I dilate on this thesis mainly iii through close readings in dissertational prose as well as in documentary poem form. Scholars have most often interpreted the history of sodomitical discourse in relation to the nineteenth century New South Wales as evidencing previously censored histories of homosexual subcultures (Aldrich; Wotherspoon), or in the case of penal reform documents as evidence of the hyperbolic rhetorics of this bourgeoise reform movement (McKenzie; Reid). I use a double headed approach by drawing on the fields of queer historicism and queer theory, (Foucault; Freccero; King; Edelman), as well as on archival poetics, and objectivist poetics and criticism (Howe; Reznikoff; Niedecker; Quartermain; Du Plessis) to add to and revise this scholarship. I also made many new discoveries in state archives in relation to individuals I document in poems, thereby adding to existing scholarship on the history of sodomy. For example, I document in poem the extensive criminal record of one Samuel Jones, an incorrigible convict proximate to multiple attempted mutinies and transported, once again, in 1834 for sodomy to the notoriously severe penal island, Norfolk Island, then commonly known as “Sodom Island.” A version of Chapter 2 of this thesis, of which I am the author, is published as: “Sodom Island: Pandæmonium and the Botany Bay of Botany Bay,” Journal of the History of Sexuality 28, no. 2 (2019): 263-296, https://doi.org/10.7560/JHS28204. v Statement of originality This is to certify that to the best of my knowledge, the content of this thesis is my own work. It was stated, by the several witnesses, that the prisoner and deceased did not generally live on the most friendly terms - that, on the day laid in the indictment, the deceased used language of a violent and provoking nature towards her husband, accompanied by blows - that, in consequence of repeated furious attacks, he was obliged to repair to a back-house to work, in order to be out of her way - that, thither the deceased followed, and threw a stone at him, exclaiming, "you murdering villain, are you there?" - on which the prisoner rose from work, laid hold of the deceased's arm, and said, "my dear, you had better go into the house." This solicitation not being complied with, the prisoner attempted to force the deceased into the house, when she struck him a violent blow, which he resented by knocking her down, dragging her by the hair of the head along the yard, and, finally, throwing her on some logs. - This treatment was repeated, with the addition of certain opprobrious names, whereupon the deceased, seizing a tomahawk, ran towards the prisoner, and said, "you murdering villain, was I ever a w- to?"     The Rifle Club Movement and Australian Defence 1860-1941 Andrew Kilsby A thesis in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences February 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the rifle club movement and its relationship with Australian defence to 1941. It looks at the origins and evolution of the rifle clubs and associations within the context of defence developments. It analyses their leadership, structure, levels of Government and Defence support, motivations and activities, focusing on the peak bodies. The primary question addressed is: why the rifle club movement, despite its strong association with military rifle shooting, failed to realise its potential as an active military reserve, leading it to be by-passed by the military as an effective force in two world wars? In the 19th century, what became known as the rifle club movement evolved alongside defence developments in the Australian colonies. Rifle associations were formed to support the Volunteers and later Militia forces, with the first ‘national’ rifle association formed in 1888. Defence authorities came to see rifle clubs, especially the popular civilian rifle clubs, as a cheap defence asset, and demanded more control in return for ammunition grants, free rail travel and use of rifle ranges. At the same time, civilian rifle clubs grew in influence within their associations and their members resisted military control. An essential contradiction developed. The military wanted rifle clubs to conduct shooting ‘under service conditions’, which included drill; the rifle clubs preferred their traditional target shooting for money prizes.

    loïc wacquant FROM SLAVERY TO MASS INCARCERATION Rethinking the ‘race question’ in the US ot one but several ‘peculiar institutions’ have success- ively operated to define, confine, and control African- NAmericans in the history of the United States. The first is chattel slavery as the pivot of the plantation economy and inceptive matrix of racial division from the colonial era to the Civil War. The second is the Jim Crow system of legally enforced discrimination and segregation from cradle to grave that anchored the predominantly agrarian society of the South from the close of Reconstruction to the Civil Rights revolution which toppled it a full century after abolition. America’s third special device for containing the descendants of slaves in the Northern industrial metropolis is the ghetto, corresponding to the conjoint urbanization and proletarianization of African-Americans from the Great Migration of 1914–30 to the 1960s, when it was ren- dered partially obsolete by the concurrent transformation of economy and state and by the mounting protest of blacks against continued caste exclusion, climaxing with the explosive urban riots chronicled in the Kerner Commission Report.1 The fourth, I contend here, is the novel institutional complex formed by the remnants of the dark ghetto and the carceral apparatus with which it has become joined by a linked relationship of structural symbiosis and functional surrogacy. This suggests that slavery and mass imprisonment are genealogically linked and that one cannot understand the latter—its new left review 13 jan feb 2002 41 timing, composition, and smooth onset as well as the quiet ignorance or acceptance of its deleterious effects on those it affects—without return- ing to the former as historic starting point and functional analogue.

Abstract It is generally assumed that the Robertson Land Acts failed because they did not produce a closely settled rural population cf small farming freeholders. In this sense it is undoubtedly true that land reform in New South Wales "failed’', but this assumption presupposes that Robertson's Land Acts were formulated and passed primarily and fundamentally for the specific purpose which they failed to meet. It is suggest in this essay that behind the purported objective of 'unlocking the lands' for the benefit of the small farmer might be found aspects which alter the significance of the Land Acts, and give emphasis to the political, rather than social motivations of Sir John Robertson and his followers. I found some criteria for early- warning signs of antisemitic, bigoted and genocidal activities. I included a summary of neo-Nazi and white supremacy groups in modern American and then moved to a more specific focus on contemporary and prominent groups like Atomwaffen Division, the Proud Boys, the Vinlanders Social Club, the Base, Rise Against Movement, the Hammerskins, and other prominent antisemitic and hate-driven groups. Trends of hate-speech, acts of vandalism and acts of violence within the past fifty years were examined. Also, how law enforcement and the legal system has responded to these activities has been included as well. The different methods these groups use for indoctrination of younger generations has been an important aspect of my research: the consistent use of hate-rock and how hate-groups have co-opted punk and hardcore music to further their ideology. Live-music concerts and festivals surrounding these types of bands and how hate-groups have used music as a means to fund their more violent activities have been crucial components of my research as well. The use of other forms of music and the reactions of non-hate-based artists are also included. The use of the internet, social media and other digital means has also be a primary point of discussion.

    White Supremacist Prison Gangs in the United States A Preliminary Inventory Introduction With rising numbers and an increasing geographical spread, for some years white supremacist prison gangs have constitut- ed the fastest-growing segment of the white supremacist movement in the United States. While some other segments, such as neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan, have suffered stagnation or even decline, white supremacist prison gangs have steadily been growing in numbers and reach, accompanied by a related rise in crime and violence. What is more, though they are called “prison gangs,” gangs like the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, Aryan Circle, European Kindred and others, are just as active on the streets of America as they are behind bars. They plague not simply other inmates, but also local communities across the United States, from California to New Hampshire, Washington to Florida. For example, between 2000 and 2015, one single white supremacist prison gang, the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, was responsible for at least 33 murders in communities across Texas. Behind these killings were a variety of motivations, including traditional criminal motives, gang-related murders, internal killings of suspected informants or rules-breakers, and hate-related motives directed against minorities. These murders didn’t take place behind bars—they occurred in the streets, homes and businesses of cities and towns across the Lone Star State. When people hear the term “prison gang,” they often assume that such gang members plague only other prisoners, or perhaps also corrections personnel. They certainly do represent a threat to inmates, many of whom have fallen prey to their violent attacks.

Alfred Light skin color sits within a space of privilege. While this has global significance and relevance, it is particularly true in Jamaica, a former British colony. The majority of the population is of African descent, yet there is an elevation of Eurocentric values and a denigration of Afrocentric values in many facets of life, specifically in the promotion of light skin as an indicator of beauty and social status. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological and socio-cultural factors that influence the practice of skin bleaching in the postcolonial society of Jamaica. Additionally, the study outlined the nation‘s efforts to combat the skin-bleaching phenomenon.
