El II Congreso de la asociación, “La difusión del conocimiento en los estudios de las mujeres. Dinámicas y estrategias de poder y ciudadanía”, que tuvo lugar en la Universidad de Alicante en mayo de 2001, representó la ocasión de volver a encontrarse y analizar cómo estos nuevos saberes, o nue- vas maneras de entender los antiguos, marcan el desarrollo de la presencia de la mujer en la universidad así como en la sociedad. El objetivo principal de este congreso fue el de analizar cómo las nuevas tecnologías, el multiculturalismo, la influencia de la globalización, el control (o la falta de control) de los medios de la producción cultural (editoriales, redes de difu- sión, docencia, cine, etc.) y los nuevos retos del conocimien- to en el ámbito de los estudios de género influyen en la vida de las mujeres y de la sociedad. Por ello, los temas a tratar se articularon dentro de unos bloques temáticos bien deter- minados: epistemologías feministas, análisis de la relación ÍNDICE 9 La difusión del conocimiento en los estudios de las mujeres Dinámicas y estrategias de poder y ciudadanía poder/saber y estrategias de resistencia, nuevas tecnologí- as, medios de comunicación y redes de difusión del conoci- miento. El análisis de los ejes temáticos presentes en el con- texto de los diferentes bloques se desarrolló a través de una serie de conferencias y de la presentación de un amplio aba- nico de comunicaciones. Las Actas que ahora publicamos recogen la mayoría de las ponencias que se leyeron a lo largo de tres intensas y esti- mulantes jornadas y ponen de relieve la riqueza de este intercambio intelectual. Desgraciadamente, no ha sido posi- ble proporcionar al público lector la aportación de las confe- renciantes. Sin embargo, agradecemos a Isabel Carrera de la Universidad de Oviedo (“Feminismo, conocimiento y mul- ticulturalismo: estrategias de intervención”), a Sabira Mateen de la Asociación Revolucionaria de Mujeres Afganas (“Análisis de la relación poder/saber y estrategias de resis- tencia”), a Rosa Cobo de la Universidad de A Coruña (“El paradigma feminista en las ciencias sociales: las mujeres como sujetos y objetos de la investigación social”) y a Montserrat Boix de Mujeres en Red (“Redes de mujeres y nuevas tecnologías: nuevas estrategias de comunicación con perspectiva de género”) su generosidad en querer com- partir con todas nosotras su tiempo, su investigación y, por supuesto, su compromiso intelectual. 10 ÍNDICE Presentación Como nos recuerdan Kemp y Squires (London: Routledge, 1998) si el mensaje que se intenta mandar a la sociedad es el que estamos viviendo una época de `post-feminismo’, el enorme impulso que la dimensión de género está asumien- do en el terreno académico, y su búsqueda de contacto con el exterior, demuestran la falacia de semejante afirmación. No podemos olvidar que este movimiento intelectual no surge exclusivamente de desde dentro de la Universidad, mayoritariamente conservadora en lo que concierne el cues- tionamiento de sus bases filosóficas, sino que se ve impul- sado con fuerza desde el exterior, desde la sociedad y los colectivos de mujeres que trabajan el `día a día’, la mayoría de las veces sin la seguridad que, como diría Virginia Woolf, proporciona una habitación propia y una independencia eco- nómica. El encuentro entre lo social y lo académico ha pro- porcionado a los estudios de género su carácter político y comprometido, transformándolos, en nuestra opinión, en un posible punto de contacto entre la Universidad y la sociedad civil. Eugenia Domínguez Universidad de Sevilla 1.- Introducción: el lenguaje cinematográfico. l cine es un poderoso medio de comunicación que, a través de las historias que relata, refleja la realidad Esocial como en un espejo, enseña las visiones y ver- siones tanto de la cultura como de los estereotipos, valores, actitudes e ideologías que se dan en cualquier momento his- tórico de cualquier grupo humano. Y uno de los fenómenos que se pueden estudiar en el cine, son los estereotipos de los roles que se desempeñan en las distintas profesiones, sobre todo los de aquellas que más presencia social tienen en los tiempos actuales.

    Outline of a Gender Conflict: Notes on an Early Story by Dvora Baron Outline of a Gender Conflict: Notes on an Early Story by Dvora Baron Einat Baram Eshel, Tel Aviv University, and Beit-Berl College, Israel Abstract This article examines Dvora Baron’s early story Zug mitkotet… (skitza) (A quarreling couple… [sketch]), about a young married couple drawn into a verbal and physical altercation. I propose that this early story already shows intimations of symbolism and complexity that characterize Baron’s later stories, as well as the first signs of the blurring and encoding of female protest that are characteristic of the second half of her work. Baron did this mainly by adapting the conventions of early twentieth-century male literature – private themes, short genres and fragmented language – and employing their meaning and purpose for female needs. Introduction Dvora Baron (1887-1956),1 a noted Russian-Israeli author, wrote over 80 short stories. She started writing during the Tkufat ha’thiya (Hebrew Renaissance Period) which occurred during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Her works have been highly analyzed in respect of the fact that she was one of a minority of women writers in a poetic world almost totally dominated by men. Baron’s works and life are generally considered to be divided into two major periods: early works (until the early 1920s, much of which Baron withheld from second publication) tending to focus on social themes and including somewhat blatant stories of women’s search for independence; and later works presenting the feminist angle more subtly, obscuring the feminist theme per se yet somewhat expanding it to include struggles of a more universal nature.

    Dvir Abramovich Resurrecting a long-vanished diaspora: The Portrayal of the Jewish Shtetl in Dvora aron!s Sunbeams Regarded as the first modern Hebrew female author, this essay contends that what set Dvora Baron apart from the male-dominated prose of the period, was her probing of the east-European Shtetl, rather than the Zionist pro ect. Through the e#amination of Baron$s short story %Shavririm&, this essay probes Baron’s vivid depiction of the Shtetl, as well as offering a scathing criti'ue of the community’s treatment of the heroine( an orphaned girl who overcomes emotional and physical hardships to emerge as a noble, triumphant figure. )n her corpus, Baron betrayed a subversive strand of writing that focused on the Jewish women’s e#perience and gendered traumas in a patriarchal society.     Chapter 2 Noteworthy Jewish Descendants of Mariampole and Vicinity INTRODUCTION Some Mariampolers managed to survive not only the difficulties of life under the Russian Tsar and the Communists, but also the far more murderous designs of the Nazi regime. Those who managed to save themselves by immigrating to America and other parts of the world multiplied, and, in time, prospered as well. Within two or three generations, their descendants contributed to society in a great number of professions and community services. Some Jewish Mariampoler descendants have risen to high levels of achievement. By recognizing the work of those who have survived, we can surmise how much poorer our world is for the loss of those whose lives were cut short. While this is by no means a complete account of all of the descendants who have made valuable contributions, it is my hope that these biographical sketches will encourage others to share with me their stories so that they can be included in a subsequent edition of this project.     YEHIEL RAVREBE: JEWISH POET AND SCHOLAR Avraham Greenbaum and Mikhail Beizer Yehiel Ravrebe (1883-1939), until recently a relatively obscure figure, has now begun to arouse interest in the Soviet Union/Commonwealth of Inde­ pendent States, as well as abroad.1 He was active in a surprising number of areas in both pre-Soviet and Soviet Jewish culture and, had his life not been cut short by Stalinist persecution, might have made even more of an impact than he did. 1. Life Yehiel Izrailevich Ravrebe was bom in the small town of Baranovka in the province of Volhyn Cater the Zhitomir district) on April 3, 1883.2 His father, a shohet (ritual slaughterer) and perhaps a melamed (teacher of children) as well, was a follower of the tsaddik (Hasidic rabbi) of Makarov, as were indeed all the town’s inhabitants. Ravrebe has left some interesting memoirs of this personality in an essay in Russian, **The Wedding of the Makarov Tsaddik.”3 From early childhood the boy impressed his neighbors with his outstand­ ing memory and diligence. In addition to his attainments in the usual study of Bible and Talmud, for which he became known as an Hui (Talmudic prodigy), he also attained mastery of the Hebrew language and even the Kabbala. The ascendance of emigration in its heyday invigorated a new social order that derived its legitimacy from entirely different ways of conceptualizing Jewish identity - from a structured, territorialized Yiddishkayt of rabbinic authority, ritual observance, and the vernacular to a more ethereal Ashkenazi individuality embedded in the colonial and racial contingencies of the Atlantic world. The first part of this study examines the first Yiddish adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Vilna, 1868), retitled Slavery or Serfdom , by Isaac Meir Dik. I show how the author’s rereading of rabbinic slave laws transformed Stowe’s sentimental novel of Christian abolitionism into a travel report about the ethical superiority of Jewish over Christian slaveholding practices, and thus the socio-political benefit of Jewish emigration to the United States.

Spaces can be interrupted, appropriated, and transformed through artistic and literary practice. bell hooks1 Do women write differently than men? Asked this question in a rare inter- view published in the 1950s, the Hebrew prose writer Devorah Baron gave the following answer: No. [I don't] see a difference between the writing of men and women. But women may be more capable, perhaps, of describing the life of a woman from the inside, while male writers see women only from the outside. Yes, the woman writer is better at recognizing certain aspects of a woman's life, all that is connected to the kitchen, to foodstuffs, the nur- sery, and so on.2 [emphasis added] The kitchen? The nursery? By invoking these stereotypically feminine "inside" spaces, what did Baron mean to say about the potential dis- tinctiveness of women's writing? Was she being ironic and flip to her interviewer, offering a paradoxically simplistic answer to what she con- sidered a simplistic and irksome question? Or was she honestly delineating the spaces in which so many women's lives, and hence so many women's stories, have unfolded? Was she situating her own writing within this domestic realm? One way to unpack the meaning of Baron's statement is to consider the Nashim: A Journal of Jewish Women s Studies and Gender Issues ; no. 5. © 2002 83 Wendy Zierler symbolic importance of the kitchen as a marginal space that can serve, as bell hooks has described, as a site not just of repression, but also of resis- tance, a location of "radical openness" and possibility.3 To be sure, the primary responsibilities traditionally assigned to women for preparing food, keeping the home, and feeding and raising children have seriously limited the opportunities of many women to do creative work.
