Tim Schou Tim Schou Tim Schou TIM SCHOU TIM SCHOU TIM SCHOU Tim Schou releases new single “Altar” and seals a deal with BMG Recorded in a Russian sauna and consolidated by a deal with BMG: “ALTAR”, the new single from Danish artist Tim Schou is out on January 19. The Danish singer, songwriter and solo artist Tim Schou is renowned to be a modern vagabond, travelling 250 days a year and couch surfing his way through an incredibly productive musical career, with more than 200 titles in his catalogue. Now, we can taste the fruits of his endeavors with the new single and video “Altar” hitting the streets. “Altar was actually conceived and tracked in a Russian sauna” explains Tim, who is in the habit of using his journeys as inspiration for his song writing. “Four German producers, a Canadian songwriter and myself were all gathered, drinking and talking about sex and religion... I like to use these random experiences that seems so mundane on the surface, but really gives life its spice and depth.” The danceable pop tune is produced by the successful German producer team Hitimpulse (Kygo, Ellie Goulding, Alma, Felix Jaehn, Craig David). Hitimpulse also produced Tim Schou’s debut single “Novocaine” that won him three international prizes last year: Best Male Artist and Overall Grand Prize at the 13th annual IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards) and Best Pop Song at Akademia Music Awards 2017. 2017 was indeed an eventful year for the singing globetrotter. Besides the three prestigious prizes, Tim Schou has co-written the platinum-awarded single “Kiss You Goodbye” for Swedish universal artist Anton Hagman Featured on “Feel Good” by Universal artist Felix Jaehn and “Just Another Nobody” by Winterlude Worked with writers and producers such as Jasper Leak (Sia), Nico Farmakalidis (12 Grammy nominations), Thomas Troelsen (Flo Rida, Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor), Mike Green (Paramore, Sum41, The Wanted), Miklos Malek (Jennifer Lopez, Pixie Lott), David Botrill (Muse, Placebo, The Smashing Pumpkins), Kiyanu Kim (Miley Cyrus, Gwen Stefani), Hitimpulse (Kygo, Alma, Felix Jaehn) and Martin Gallop (Alma, Robin Schulz) Turned 1.64 million streams in total on Spotify alone. In addition, Tim Schou and his label, Iceberg Records, wrapped up the year by signing a worldwide license agreement with BMG Recordings, excluding Scandinavia. The deal with BMG was finalized in Berlin in December 2017 and see’s the independent Danish label, Iceberg Records, maintain its relationship with Schou for the Nordic territories in securing the licensing deal for the rest of the world via BMG. Tim is not only an artist with a remarkable star quality and very prolific co-writer and topliner. Recently he received great attention for his remarkable way of life. His constant urge to travel and search for inspiration has made him embrace the adventurous and unconstrained lifestyle of a vagabond, spending every waking our writing songs wherever he goes. Now, with the BMG license deal, his new single “Altar” is the benchmark of a promising future. .

  • Manufacturing Creativity: Production, Performance, and Dissemination of K-Pop*
Korea Journal, vol. 53, no. 4 (winter 2013): 14-33. 14 © Korean NationalKOREA Commission JOURNAL for / UNESCO, WINTER 2013 Manufacturing Creativity: Production, Performance, and Dissemination of K-pop* Gil-Sung PARK Abstract The rise of K-pop (Korean pop) as a new global music genre has wrought theoretical turmoil within the field of cultural studies. This article argues that the global ascen- dance of K-pop can primarily be attributed to the passionate support of inter-Asian audiences. However, the actual production, performance, and dissemination of K-pop contents have little to do with the Asian pop-culture system. Although the manufacture of K-pop music and its performers depends on Korean talent and man- agement, K-pop producers tend to rely heavily on the global music industries of North America and Europe for their creative content. The global dissemination of K-pop would not have been possible without global social network service (SNS) sites such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter—none of which are owned or operated by Asians. This article argues that the manufacturing of creativity in non-Western music, as illustrated by the case of Hallyu, involves three stages: globalization of cre- ativity, localization of musical contents and performers, and global dissemination of the musical contents through social media. Keywords: K-pop (Korean pop), Hallyu, creativity, music industry, globalization, localization, social network service (SNS) sites * This research was supported by a Korea University Grant. The author gives special thanks to Kang Sou-Hwan, Park Jung-Ha, Oh Hayeon, Ye Weibo, and Song Choo Eui for their assistance with data collection and management.

Since the late 1980s, Korean pop music has aspired to be a more advanced industry and establish an international presence, based on the economic leap and democratization as a springboard. Contemporary K-pop, originating from the underground dance scene in the 1980s, succeeded in transforming Korean pop music into a modern and youth-oriented genre with a new style dubbed "rap/dance music." The rise of dance music changed the landscape of Korean popular music and became the cornerstone of the K-pop idol music. In the era of globalization, K-pop’s unique aesthetics and strategy, later termed “Cultural Technology,” achieved substantial returns in the international market. Throughout this evolution, Korean Americans were vital players who brought K-pop closer to its mission of modern and international pop music. In the age of globalization, K-pop's modernity and identity are evolving in a new way.
