Kids' Life and Times Survey 2015 Kids’ Life and Times Survey 2015 – Troubleshooting guide What is the Kids’ Life and Times survey? Kids’ Life and Times (KLT) is an annual survey of all P7 children in Northern Ireland covering issues important to children today. The survey consists of an online questionnaire lasting about 20 minutes and is completed by the children in school. The overall purpose of the survey is to inform relevant organisations of the views of children and to give children a voice in issues that affect them. Further background information and instructions on how to take part in the survey are available in the Instructions for Teachers document on the KLT website at http://www.ark.ac.uk/klt/teachers/ When will the survey be available online? This year’s survey will be available online from 9.00am on Monday 2nd November 2015 until 5.00pm on Friday 15th January 2016. What questions will be in the survey? This year the survey includes questions on sport, shared education and things children might do in school to help them to stay calm; there are also some questions on health and bullying. If you would like to view the content of the survey before the children participate please go to http://www.ark.ac.uk/klt/teachers/ Who needs to give consent for the children to take part? Please give each child in the class an opt-out form to take home to his/her parent or guardian. If their parent/guardian does not want them to participate, please ask them to return the form to you as soon as possible (the forms do not need to be sent back to us). Please ensure that the children whose parent/guardian has returned the opt-out form do not take part in the survey. At the start of the questionnaire, the child will also be asked if he/she wants to take part in the survey – the children do not have to take part if they do not want to. Where do I get the opt-out forms? Opt-out forms have been sent to every primary school in Northern Ireland. However, you can also download and print out the form from http://www.ark.ac.uk/klt/teachers/ Can I get the opt-out forms in other languages? Yes – please contact [email protected] or phone 9097 5970 to request translations of the opt-out forms for parents. We will then send this to you. We will also make these translations available online at http://www.ark.ac.uk/klt/teachers/ so please check the website to see if a form is already available in the language that you need. At the start of the survey children are asked for a school number – what is this? Your School Number is printed on the letter sent to the principal of your school and on the teacher’s instructions mailed to each school. Alternatively, you can use your school’s DENI number. You can also find a full list of schools and school numbers at the end of this document. Flash is not installed on my computer – can we still do the survey? There is a short animated introduction to the survey, which is programmed in Flash. However, if you do not have Flash installed on your device (for example, if you are using an iPad), please select the non-Flash version of the survey (see the link at www.ark.ac.uk/klt) If I have any queries or technical problems, how can I contact the Kids’ Life and Times team? You can contact us using the Kids’ Life and Times Helpline number at 028 9097 5970. If no one is available to take your call, please leave a message and one of the team will get back to you as soon as possible. You can also contact us by email [email protected] Thank you for taking part in the survey. The results will be available on the KLT website later in the year. This programme makes a very significant contribution to the Government’s 10 year Strategy for Children and Young People in Northern Ireland. 1.2 This report encompasses information, data and evaluation of the Extended Schools Programme across the five Education and Library Boards. The report provides an analysis of the 2011 – 2012 programme delivered by schools across Northern Ireland. This is the sixth year of operation of the Extended Schools Programme. 1.3 ‘Every School a Good School’ (ESaGS) – the School Improvement Strategy published in April 2008 requires all schools to raise the quality of provision and improve pupil outcomes. The Extended Schools Programme contributes significantly to the strategies utilised by schools to meet the four core elements of the ESaGS policy. Extended Schools funding enables schools to support children and their families to overcome barriers to learning and to reach their full potential. This funding has allowed schools to provide a range of programmes that “…Reduce Underachievement, Improve the Life Chances of Children and Young People and Foster Health and Well Being and Social Inclusion”.

The programme enables schools to target school improvement strategies which influence the families and communities that surround them so that a more holistic approach can be taken to improved achievement and attainment for children and young people at every stage of their development. The origins of the Extended Schools’ programme can be traced to the ‘Every Child Matters’ (ECM) agenda, which in Northern Ireland became the ‘Our Children, Our Young People, Our Pledge’ strategy which was co-ordinated by the Office of the First Minister and the Deputy First Minister, (OFMDFM). The aim of the strategy as launched by the Secretary of State in March 2006 was: To reduce underachievement and improve the life chances of children and young people by enhancing their educational development and fostering health, well-being and social inclusion through the integrated delivery of the support and services necessary to ensure every child has the best start in life.
