This information includes identification, taxonomy, distribution, and present status. Also included are practical considerations pointing out how this diversity can be applied in fishery management programs. My formal study of western trouts began in 1957 as a research assistant to the late Paul Needham at the University of California, Berkeley. Needham and I collected trout from California to Alaska in 1957. In 1958 and 1959,1 collected trout in the Lahontan Basin, which resulted in a M.S. thesis on the trouts of the Great Basin. In 1963, Needham and I wrote a monograph on the western trouts and planned to publish it in the University of California publications series. I was not satisfied with our monograph because too many questions were not adequately answered or were answered too simplistically. When Needham died in 1964, I withdrew the monograph from publication. In the intervening years, I still have not discovered all the answers pertaining to the origins, relationships, and classification of western trouts. This present mono¬ graph, however, articulates the unknowns and should facilitate future research designed to come up with more definite answers. I have accumulated considerable data during the past 20 years on western trouts. In view of the diverse interests of the potential readers, it has been difficult to sort out what to include and what to omit from the voluminous subject matter. In making such decisions, I asked: Would someone want to know this? Would this information be valuable to someone? This course has led to the inclusion of a wide range of subject matter pertaining to western trouts—their classification, status, general biology, and management poten¬ tial. The main emphasis is placed on the biological or ecological aspects of the native trouts, rather than on technicalities of their taxonomy in an attempt to underscore a theme of this work—that many of the most significant attributes of evolutionary adaptions are expressed in physiological and behavioral differences governing such traits as migration, tolerance of high temperatures, feeding specializations, etc. Such biological attributes are often completely unrelated to morphological and geographical attributes on which

  • 1 EAGLE LAKE RAINBOW TROUT Oncorhynchus Mykiss Aquilarum
    EAGLE LAKE RAINBOW TROUT Oncorhynchus mykiss aquilarum (Snyder) Status: High Concern. The Eagle Lake rainbow trout (ELRT) does not exist as a self-sustaining wild population because of dependence on hatchery propagation. Habitat degradation and the presence of alien brook trout in Pine Creek, the ELRT’s principal spawning grounds, along with continued reliance on hatchery production to maintain the ELRT population will make it increasingly difficult to re-establish a wild population. Description: This subspecies is similar to other rainbow trout in gross morphology (see Moyle 2002), but differs slightly in meristic counts, especially in having finer scales than coastal rainbow trout. It is also distinctive in possessing 58 chromosomes, rather than the 60 typical of other rainbow trout (Busack et al. 1980). Taxonomic Relationships: Snyder (1917) described this trout as a subspecies of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri aquilarum. However, Hubbs and Miller (1948) examined Snyder's specimens and concluded that ELRT were derived from hybridization between native Lahontan cutthroat trout (presumed to have occupied Eagle Lake prehistorically) and introduced rainbow trout. Miller (1950) later retracted the hybridization theory. Needham and Gard (1959) then suggested that ELRT were descended from introduced or immigrant rainbow trout from the Feather or Pit River drainages. Behnke (1965, 1972) proposed a redband-rainbow hybrid origin, although redband trout are now considered to be rainbow trout subspecies. Busack et al. (1980), in an extensive electrophoretic, karyotypic and meristic analysis, suggested that ELRT were derived either from immigration or an unrecorded introduction of a rainbow trout with 58 chromosomes. The distinctive morphology, ecology, and physiology of this form all point to ELRT being derived from natural colonization from the Sacramento River drainage.

Cattle began grazing the Kern Plateau more than 130 years ago, long before the area and surrounding environs were established as the Inyo and Sequoia national forests. Various studies have documented that cattle grazing can seriously damage water and land resources. But attempts to reform grazing management policy on the Kern Plateau and to protect native species in this case, California's state fish, the golden trout, and its close relative shave met with little success. In part, the failure to reform grazing management stems from the long-held view that cattle ranching is the cornerstone of the local economy.

    Drought assessments of Little Kern Golden Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss whitei) 2015 Tulare County State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife Heritage and Wild Trout Program Prepared by Stephanie Hogan and Claire Buchanan Overview In 2013, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Heritage and Wild Trout Program (HWTP) initiated drought assessments on several waters in California. The CDFW Threatened Trout Committee and HWTP staff developed a prioritized list of streams with native trout species of high conservation value that may be at risk due to drought conditions. This list was prioritized based on genetic integrity with a focus on putative populations, species on federal and/or state endangered species lists, and perceived threat level. The latter included consideration of slope, aspect, streamflow, water source, and surrounding land use activities. A structured decision-making matrix was created to aid staff in assessing drought conditions, evaluate whether fish rescues were necessary to protect certain populations and identify potential locations for translocations (within the same waterbody, within basin or out-of-basin; Table 1). Little Kern Golden Trout are listed as threatened under the Federal Endangered Species Act and drought monitoring locations were established in 2013 in five key tributaries to the Little Kern River. These streams were originally selected because they support populations with high genetic integrity and a severe fire burned this area in 2011. These sites were surveyed in 2014 and 2015 (Hogan et. al. 2014); this report summarizes the results of the 2015 drought assessments in Lion, Sheep, Tamarack, Willow, and No Name creeks. Need Negative effects from drought on inland native trout populations and their habitats have been historically documented and, in some cases, led to localized extirpation.
