With regard to construction of the Tsubame Series 800 trains, the companies involved encountered many challenges. The following two solutions contributed greatly to overcoming these challenges: 1)The “building up experiences” were used effectively, including the continuous improvements made in technologies, the effective use of knowledge accumulated in departments in the companies other than those directly related to product production, and the contributions of their research laboratories. 2)A flexible production system was established, including the accumulated experiences and knowledge mutually shared by other related departments in the companies, and the manual assembly processes added to the automatic production lines. Traditional Crafts of Kumamoto Various traditional crafts are used in everyday life in Kumamoto. These crafts are born from Kumamoto’s natural environment, the skills Traditional Crafts of Kumamoto of craftsmen, and the ingenuity used by locals in their daily lives. Kumamoto’s handicrafts are created through communication between Craft items that originate from Kumamoto and were handed down for the craft creators and the craft users. In Kumamoto, Shodai pottery, Amakusa ceramics, and Higo inlay metalwork all received this distinction in March 2003. In December 2013, Yamaga lanterns were the fourth craft from Kumamoto to be designated. 1 Higo-Zogan Metalwork Metalwork in Kumamoto includes the following crafts: Higo-zogan, which originated from sword accessories; Kawashiri and Hitoyoshi-Kuma cutting tools, such as kitchen knives, farm hoes and sickles; and swords, the production of which dates back 750 years ago to the Kamakura Period. -

Iki Department of Architecture and Environmental Planning, Kumamoto University, Japan Abstract A town, city or urban region has a potential which stems from its own natural form, sense of place, sense of history, spirit and ethos. Nowadays, in addition to the primary demands of life, many urban areas are facing an increasing population and a growing demand or expectation of the city for tourism activity. However, whilst increasing tourism activity is an important economic backbone for certain cities, tourism facilities are responsible for a substantial increase in environment degradation due to tourists’ rising expectation for services and facilities. The structure of this research is first to present the general overview of urban tourism in Kumamoto City through literature. This study will analyze the potentials of Kumamoto City in the creation of urban tourism, with case studies of other cities, to meet the need of integrative urban planning. The aim of this research is to review and evaluate the importance and influence of sustainability of the city through the view of making a tourism space for people. This analysis seeks to illustrate the phenomenon of urban tourism in the scale of a Japanese city. The conclusion discusses the importance of urban tourism in proposing social sustainability, and the potential for development in the current conditions.
