The availability of up-to-date, accurate and impartial statistics is vital for government decision-makers and an informed public. The information provided in the review helps inform government, and the general public, on a wide variety of topics. This document is a valuable tool to help measure the level of success of government initiatives and to determine where there may be a need for new programs and services. The findings within this report have remained paramount as the province continues to understand, evaluate, and address the needs of Islanders throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The Government of Prince Edward Island remains devoted to making informed decisions from the most up-to-date data and information on our Province, our economy, and our residents. The Annual Statistical Review provides high-level information and many interesting facts in over 100 data tables on a wide range of topics, such as demography, labour, economic accounts, primary industry, and manufacturing, among others. The information is compiled from a variety of sources, including Statistics Canada, provincial government departments, and the private sector. All tables are referenced to the source for those interested in more detailed information on these topics. In addition to publishing the Annual Statistical Review, the staff of the Statistics Bureau are consistently working to provide up-to-date monthly and quarterly statistical information online. Darlene Compton Minister of Finance Prince Edward Island 47th Annual Statistical Review 1 Map of Prince Edward Island 47th Annual Statistical Review 2 Map of Prince Edward Island 45th Annual Statistical Review 2 nd A Historical Note Before the European explorations, Prince Edward Island was frequently used by the Mi’kmaq People for fishing, hunting and some planting. The Mi’kmaq called the island Epekwitk, meaning “cradle on the waves.” Europeans later changed the pronunciation of the name to Abegweit. Historians credit the European discovery of the Island to Jacques Cartier, the French navigator, who claimed the Island for Francis I, King of France, on July 1, 1534. In 1720 the Island, then called Île Saint Jean, was colonized by 300 French settlers, sponsored by a commercial company of the Comte de Saint Pierre. The Island was ceded to Great Britain in 1763. Two years later the designated capital city of the Island of St. John took on the name Charlotte Town in honour of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England. In 1799 the colony was renamed Prince Edward Island in honour of Edward, Duke of Kent, who was then commander of the British forces in North America. Prince Edward Island is known as the “Cradle of Confederation”, because the Charlottetown Conference, held there in 1864, initiated the movement toward Canada’s federation. The Island became a province in 1873. The Armorial Bearings 1 of the Province of Prince Edward Island, shown above, were proclaimed to come into force on December 13, 2002. The centrepiece is the Shield of Arms, granted by King Edward VII in 1905, featuring the English heraldic lion, a large oak tree on the right and three young saplings on the left. The mature tree originally represented England, while the three saplings stand for the three counties - Kings, Queens and Prince. Scrolled along the bottom of the Shield of Arms are the Latin words Parva Sub Ingenti, which, when translated, read: The small under the protection of the great. Confederation Centre of the Arts stages were filled with music, drama, and laughter and welcomed visitors and artists from all over the world. Our galleries featured diverse and emerging artists who brought new live audiences here while receiving unprecedented digital media attention online. As we complete the first year of our 2019-24 Strategic Plan, we are entering into a global pandemic that has brought with it a paralyzing level of uncertainty. The Charlottetown Festival has been cancelled for the first time in its history, and Confederation Centre of the Arts has had to close its doors entirely as of March 16, 2020. What lies beyond the summer is unknown, so for now we are following the guidance of the Chief Public Health Officer and the Province of PEI – guidance which is updated daily and will ultimately indicate when and in what way we can reopen, and how gathering restrictions will impact our ability to deliver various programs. We remain committed to our Strategic Plan and our three pillars of Artistic Excellence, Engaged Diverse Communities, and Organizational Sustainability. We remain committed to our 12 priority areas as outlined in the plan, and the many resulting goals and actions that are part of our implementation plan.

We continue to working towards making our community more inclusive and inviting for residents and visitors alike, with programs and activities for all ages, ability levels, and interests. This year, we encourage the public to try something new and get active. Enjoy a guided walking tour, join an organized sport, or attend one of the many events held in the capital City. We are lucky to live in such a walkable city, where active transportation is a leisure activity and the waterfront is accessible throughout the downtown core. On behalf of City Council, we wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the organizations, City staff, and volunteers that make these programs, events, and activities possible. The level of community involvement is what makes the City of Charlottetown such a great place to live with so many unique things to offer.     ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION STRATEGY With more people using active transportation, the air will be cleaner, people will be healthier, and money will be saved. 2 For many residents of PEI, there are opportunities to incorporate active transportation into our day-to-day lives. The PEI Active Transportation Strategy lays out pathways to support Islanders in making active, cleaner and healthier transportation choices. Through a variety of investments and outreach initiatives the strategy will focus on: • Enhancing the safety of everyone who uses active forms of transportation through infrastructure improvements; • Improving active transportation route connectivity within and among communities and between key destinations across the province; • Strengthening partnerships with municipalities, Indigenous communities and non-government organizations (NGOs) around walking, cycling and any other forms of active transportation; and • Creating a promotion and education campaign to increase the confidence and competence of those wanting to commute actively. While developing the Sustainable Transportation Action Plan for PEI, Islanders were asked what should be done to encourage more active transportation.

    THE FOUNDATION ASSISTING CANADIAN TALENT ON RECORDINGS. 2006 - 2007 ANNUAL REPORT The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings. factor, The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings, was founded in 1982 by chum Limited, Moffat Communications and Rogers Broadcasting Limited; in conjunction with the Canadian Independent Record Producers Association (cirpa) and the Canadian Music Publishers Association (cmpa). Standard Broadcasting merged its Canadian Talent Library (ctl) development fund with factor’s in 1985. As a private non-profit organization, factor is dedicated to providing assistance toward the growth and development of the Canadian independent recording industry. The foundation administers the voluntary contributions from sponsoring radio broadcasters as well as two components of the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Music Fund which support the Canadian music industry. factor has been managing federal funds since the inception of the Sound Recording Development Program in 1986 (now known as the Canada Music Fund). Support is provided through various programs which all aid in the development of the industry. The funds assist Canadian recording artists and songwriters in having their material produced, their videos created and support for domestic and international touring and showcasing opportunities as well as providing support for Canadian record labels, distributors, recording studios, video production companies, producers, engineers, directors– all those facets of the infrastructure which must be in place in order for artists and Canadian labels to progress into the international arena. factor started out with an annual budget of $200,000 and is currently providing in excess of $14 million annually to support the Canadian music industry. Canada has an abundance of talent competing nationally and internationally and The Department of Canadian Heritage and factor’s private radio broadcaster sponsors can be very proud that through their generous contributions, they have made a difference in the careers of so many success stories.
