Press Release Nikos Alexiou A Version Opening Thursday June 13, 2019, 8 pm Exhibition duration: June 13 – July 20, 2019 Zoumboulakis Galleries are delighted to announce the exhibition “Nikos Alexiou - A Version”, an installation based on a version of the work presented in 2005-2006 at the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Alexandria, in parallel with the 23rd Alexandria Biennale for Mediterranean Countries. The exhibition is curated by the artist’s sister, Poppy Alexiou. The exhibition essay, published in book form, is written by art historian Christopher Marinos. «The installation at Zoumboulakis Galleries, as the one shown in Alexandria, consists of a cluster of pendulous works. Made of cut papers, glue, string, thread, bookbinding thread and reeds, the works form abstract geometrical patterns. It is noteworthy that the naming of these untitled handcrafts originates from their basic morphological features. More specifically, the installation includes two “mosaics on paper” inspired 20 Kolonaki Sq., 10673, Athens –Tel. 2103608278 - [email protected] www.zoumboulakis.gr by the artist’s frequent visits to the Holy Monastery of Iviron, a red and a black “curtain”, four “circles”, two “stripes”, two “strings”, a colorful “rain” made of paper and several lace “grids”, one on a large-scale and seven of a smaller size. Even though they are self-contained and autonomous, the perforated works are intertwined harmoniously with each other, giving the impression of a cohesive whole and consequently acquiring an installation’s features. Additionally, these ethereal works compose a continuously variable and animated image. This results mostly from the potential kinesis, even indiscernible, provoked by the visitors’ presence in the space and by the illusory movement of the geometrical patterns.

Hommage to NIKOS ALEXIOU group exhibition Participating Artists: Nikos Alexiou, Lefteris Alexiou, Maria Ikonomopoulou, Lefteris Tapas, Dimitris Tataris, Stratis Tavlaridis Show Duration: 16.09.16 - 15.10.16 Nikos Alexiou was born in Rethymnon in 1960. He died in 2011 at the early age of 51 leaving behind an important body of work. After some brief studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1984 he returned to Greece where he enrolled at the Athens School of Fine Arts. A year later he held his first solo show in the historic art gallery DESMOS. Already from that early period he focused working with humble materials such as stone, wood, mud, reeds and water. A pioneer in Greece, in 1987 he became the first artist to create "Prisms", a series of immaterial works- installations that analyze the spectrum of white light in space, on rain, water etc. That was followed by "Solar Houses", a series of simple architectural constructions made of reeds that resembled immaterial structures of buildings. Most of all, however, he became known with his characteristic lace-like cut out patterned paper works, his paper "curtains", his "skeleton” plexuses made of reed and with his obsession with handicraft, never wasting anything, always transforming every little piece of material left out into something new. In 1995 he found himself for the first time on Mount Athos and since then he began to visit regularly at various different moments throughout his life. In Athos he discovered spirituality, ecstasy and mystery, asceticism and the notion of metaphysics that would profoundly affect his work from that point onwards.

  • Press Release
PRESS RELEASE Nikos Alexiou San Marco di Venezia 2010 Opening Thursday 8 April 2010, 8 pm Zoumboulakis Galleries, 20 Kolonaki Square Nikos Alexiou presents his work “San Marco di Venezia 2010” at Zoumboulakis Galleries, from the 8th of April until the 30th of April 2010. Alexiou will exhibit an installation consisting of a series of large-scale prints, representing the square and the Basilica of San Marco in Venice. This work is the continuation of the installation “The End” inspired by the mosaic floor of the Iveron Monastery on Mount Athos, which represented Greece in the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007. The artist sees Piazza San Marco as a vessel where “cultural and material goods” and ideas from the world are deposited, seen that way as an “open-air” museum. This flow of materials, technique and artisans arriving from the East to Venice during the centuries is represented in the floor of the Basilica di San Marco and the surrounding areas. This “marble carpet” operates as a field that bridges and merges different civilizations and eras. Iveron Monastery and San Marco Basilica can be characterized as landmarks in the artist’s journey for the comprehension and interpretation of design units that are involved and constructed into large totalities. Nikos Alexiou has been representing in an elaborate and thorough manner all the paving and mosaic patterns inside and outside the Basilica (square, doge’s palazzo, galleries and alleys around the square). Nevertheless, in order to comprehend and attribute the semantic structure of the floor, and furthermore “conquer” the inner logic of the design technique and construction of such a work, the artist was based in former prints, books and photographs, apart from the imprinting and the observation on location.
