Currently our opponents are sitting in second place in the league table but are just one point behind Bracknell Town but have a game in hand on them with 25 points from their 10 games and with a much better goal difference than them (or any other team in the division). Their last outing was against Banbury United of the Southern League Premier Division Central Division in the FA Trophy last Saturday where they came away with an excellent 2-0 victory. At the time that they were progressing in the FA Trophy we were away at Egham Town in the pouring rain, facing a much-changed side from the one that had sunk to the bottom of the division and coming away with a 0-0 draw. There was nothing shown by Egham to justify their current league position and with the display that they put on I think it highly likely that they will soon be seen to be climbing the table and causing many upsets to visiting sides. Currently we await news of our next opponents in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup and whether this will be played this side of Christmas, as if not we will have no midweek games before the end of the year. Please therefore make that extra effort to get along to the Saturday games that will be coming along in that time. Many thanks for coming this afternoon and now for my usual closing plea to get behind the lads and support at all times – it really does make a difference and will do throughout the season! BLUES DEFEAT CLOSE LEAGUE RIVALS 3rd NOVEMBER 2018 MARLOW 4 – 0 CHIPSTEAD Four goals for the second time in a matter of days - and a clean sheet! By Terry Staines Having scored twice in Tuesday's 4-1 defeat of Hanwell Town, Kamaron English went one better in scoring a hat-trick against Chipstead FC on Saturday. His goals, along with a late fourth from Marcus Mealing, saw the Blues complete one of their best performances of the season to date to take the points and move up to third in the league table. The early minutes of the game proved to be a busy period for Simon Grant in the home goal and so it remained up to the quarter hour mark. Then the award of a penalty to Marlow following a burst of pace from Isaac Osei-Tutu led to the opening goal, with English firing home from the penalty spot. This seemed to herald a marked upturn in the performance of the Blues and a second goal followed 6 minutes later with Kamaron stretching to reach and control a cross from the left, pulling the ball down and again finding the net to make it 2-0. That's how it stayed with Marlow playing some excellent football until the 78th minute when Marcus Mealing played a pinpoint through ball for English to take round the out-coming keeper and deposit in the vacant net to complete his hat-trick and make the scoreline a seemingly comfortable 3-0. So it proved with Allen Bossman winning a challenge on the edge of the away box and sliding a low cross into the path of Mealing who was centrally positioned and had the comfortable task of finding the net from close-in to complete the scoring - with another clean sheet enhancing the result for Simon Grant at the other end.

With most of fixtures at Step 6 and above called off because of the dreaded Coronavirus, it was down to one of the feeder leagues to get my fix today. So, not wanting to catch anything on public transport, apart from a train or two of course, I elected to drive to my game and I picked one that is, as far, as I know, very difficult to do by public transport. It took me just over two hours to get here and the ground is adjacent to the village hall, not that they really need one, as this is a very small village. The changing rooms are wooden and here I bumped into the jovial home management team, who pointed me in the direction of the local pub. After my recent experience of paying £4 for a pulled pork roll at the Hampshire FA ground, I thought that I couldn’t do any worse here. I was wrong. The chilli con carne with pasta with garlic bread (two slices) for £4.50 looked tempting and when it arrived it tasted nice. Problem was that it came in a large coffee mug! Back at the ground I mentioned this to my ‘trip advisor’ who told me, “I forgot to tell you that the food’s not very good!" Perhaps the clue was that no one came around to ask me if I was enjoying my meal, possibly because I didn't give them time, as I ate it in a few mouthfuls! Anyway, by now we were ready to go and once the rotund ref had finished off his fag the game soon got underway.

  • News of the Carlton Tavern
Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter January 2017 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is the eighteenth in our series of Newsletters. It marks a new scheme of trying to provide more relevant news quicker by reporting during the mid-season break in the National League calendar. It may be briefer but will be followed by an end of season edition as customary, although that, too, may have less content, for hopefully obvious reasons. Executive Summary The Club is in good heart, with both first teams well placed in their Leagues, the Women seemingly able to avoid the post promotion effect and able to maintain their showing of last season as newcomers. The Men have seen the hard work of pre-season reap rewards. A new team has evolved in quick time and has enjoyed success not seen in recent seasons and are well-placed at just more than the half way stage. Up to 14 January 2017, in the London League the Men’s 2nd XI and 3rd XI are leaders in the Premier Division and Division 1, respectively. Zak Hond XI are in ninth spot in the same League Division 1. The 4th XI are in tenth position in London League Division 2. In Division 3, the 5th XI are league leaders, with nine wins and three losses, a point ahead of London Wayfarers. In Division 5, the Hammers XI are in fifth place. Division 6 has two H&W teams: the Spaniards XI are fourth and the Thirsts XI are fifth. The Vets sit top of Veterans Division One, with nine wins and three losses but the Supervets are struggling a little, being seventh of eight in Supevets Division 1, helped by a win on 7 January 2017 against Chelmsford.
