➢ Security measures:

Madrid is generally safe. Like most other large European cities, Madrid suffers from pickpockets and grab artists who work in tourist attractions, train stations, bus stations, and airports, especially in the areas of Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España and Gran Via street. Travelers who use common sense and take basic safety precautions should not expect to encounter significant problems. Before venturing out, please remember a few important tips:

- Do not carry valuables or large amounts of money with you; - While on the Metro or the bus, or in restaurants and bars always keep your bag and purse close to your body and in front of you. It only takes a few seconds for someone to walk off with it. - When you are on the Metro and other crowded places, be aware of your surroundings. It is better to be safe than sorry. - If you are required to carry important ID documents, please ensure that you have photocopies of them and that they are stored in a safe and secure place. - Finally, always keep a record of the numbers to call to cancel your credit cards as well as the contact information of the embassy or consulate of your country in Spain.

How to seek assistance?

- The first thing to do is to cancel all bank and credit cards that were stolen. If your passport has been stolen, you must report it to the Police as well as to your country’s embassy in Spain. In such cases, foreigners in Spain are entitled to free legal assistance, should they lack financial resources.

- You are required to make an official statement at the Police Station, detailing exactly what has been stolen and how and where it happened. In Spain this is called a “denuncia”. You will require this document for insurance claims. The Spanish authorities have dedicated an English-language telephone number for victims of crimes who wish to make a police report but do not speak Spanish. The number is +34 902-102- 112. It operates from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and the caller will be instructed on the phone the location of the police station (comisaría) where they must go to sign the “denuncia” and obtain a copy.

- Once you have made the “denuncia”, you have 72 hours to collect it from the police station. The advisor on the phone should tell you which police station to go to and how to get there. If you have a choice, and are staying in the centre of Madrid, we recommend:

Comisaría de Chamberí C/ Rafael Calvo Nº 33 Tel.:+34 902 102 112 Metro: Rubén Darío (Green Line, L5)
