There were several stations where people could write about the complexities of the Filipino-American experience, listen to Filipino storybooks, draw covers of storybooks, listen to Filipino elders pass down stories in an oral tradition fashion. Invisible Storybook hosted a second event held at Charity Wings Art & Crafts Center in San Marcos, California on March 18th from 5pm-8pm. “Everyone who comes to these events will be given credit for their contributions in the fi nal copy of the storybook,” Fresas Balistreri says. “It is important to come to the events to be a contributor of the book but also because that is the point of the project--that the books are created in partnership and collaboration with the community.” Fresas, who is a former Miss Philippines San Diego, acts as the community advocate for this project. Diana, a participant of the March 13th event, pointed out how wonderful the art of the project was in her feedback card. “It was simple and adorable, I loved it!” The artwork was done by San Diego- based Fil-Am artist Jet Antonio. The fi nal copy of the book will be available for purchase through Invis- ible Storybook by this coming August. “We want to be sure to really listen to the community and make changes accordingly, and this takes time,” Carol Cabrera says. You can see photos from the two events and follow the project at her website at this link: http://www.car- olcabrera.com/si-malakas-at-si-magan- da.html. If you have any questions, concerns or want to volunteer time, art supplies, skills or talents or money to the project, please feel free to e-mail Carol directly at [email protected] or Fresas at [email protected]. “I wanted to start with creating a storybook based on Si Malakas at Si Maganda because it is the Philippine Creation Story. It is the beginning. I hope that this is only the start of what will be a long-term project.” Carol says. We hope that you come and play a part in this beautiful beginning. nvisible Storybook is a project that began brewing in Carol Cabrera’s mind when she realized she had never seen a Filipino-American character inside a children’s storybook. IInvisible Storybook is dedicated to reversing the process by which we receive story- books for our children. Instead of purchasing storybooks that have already been created, Invisible Storybook is interested in going directly to underserved and underrepresented communities and working with them in order to create and distribute children’s storybooks that are refl ective of the community’s experiences, hopes and dreams.
