During the tournament 4 different games will be played, resulting in 4 rounds of play. At each round a single game title will be played by all players simultaneously. Based on complex algorithm, a playing schedule will be generated; with result that each round a player will always compete at 3 new players, all of different nationalities. That is for the rounds 3 and 4. Based on feedback received from our participants we have dropped this restriction in the first two rounds. So it could happen that maximum two teams of the same nationality compete against each other. The result is that the EC champion always will have played against no. 2 making the competition even harder. Per round a player can earn up to 5 points by winning the games at his table. The maximum team score is therefore 20 points per round. And a maximum 80 points throughout the whole tournament. Besides a very friendly atmosphere, the gameplay is highly competitive, the final scoring is always very close and the winner is determined after finishing the last game. It all started back in 1976 when KRONE, a German cigarette company, founded a games club. In 1977 the first championship for individual players was held in Berlin, followed in 1978 with a championship in Ostsee. This was the last championship for individuals. Sven M. Kübler participated at the championships in Ostsee and encountered there the joy of tournament play. But he also noticed that there was a drawback with a tournament type for individuals in the sense that luck dominates the championships. A tournament

  • Pevans Spiel 06
Pevans Board games reviews and articles by Paul Evans – www.pevans.co.uk/Reviews Spiel ’06 Pevans’s report from the games fair (Version 1 – 24th November 2006) As you may know, the Spiel games fair is the largest games event in the world. According to the organisers, Friedhelm Merz Verlag, this year’s event had 730 exhibitors from 31 different countries presenting more than 350 new games. It attracted over 150,000 visitors over the four days, including 738 journalists (including yours truly!) from 18 countries. Okay, some of those were there for the “Comic Action” part of the show, but that’s still an awful lot of people. Of necessity, I couldn’t cover the whole show, so this is very much a personal report. It covers the highlights of what I saw at the show, picking out the games I particularly liked. I’ll post the report on my website (www.pevans.co.uk/Reviews) and will add to it as I play more of the new games. My favourite green-haired games designer (Friedemann Friese, the man behind 2F Spiele) had several things to show this year. Fiji (also in an English language edition from Rio Grande) is an auction game set on the eponymous island. In keeping with Friedemann’s sense of humour, players are collecting shrunken heads! This looks like fun, but is only second string to Fürchterliche Feinde (Formidable Foes in the English language edition from Rio Grande), Friedemann’s large game this year. I was a bit surprised to find that this is a ‘dungeon’ game.

  • Pevans Spiel 04
Pevans Board games reviews and articles by Paul Evans – www.pevans.co.uk/Reviews Spiel ’04 Notes from Pevans Introduction I enjoyed Spiel as ever. It is always refreshing to see the enthusiasm everybody (customers, publishers, designers, journalists at al) brings to the show. Not to mention all the new games. Experience has taught me that it just isn’t possible to see everything at Spiel. Scour the halls for the four days of the show and still someone will tell you about a great game that you missed. Nowadays I don’t even try. Particularly this year when another hall has been added to the show, making it bigger than ever, and I only had two days to do the rounds. So this report is very selective: it covers just a few of the 400+ new games that were on show. But then, I was only one of 149,501 visitors! I have been adding to these notes as I have played games since Spiel. I shall continue to do this, so keep an eye out for new versions of this report. As always, I must give my usual disclaimer. I often describe games by referring to other games. This is not meant to imply that one game is a copy of another, it’s simply a quick way of getting across what the game is like. DESIGNING INTERACTION What We Can Learn From Modern Board Games ROGER NGIM Associate Director, Internal Communications Yale University March 17, 2017 AGENDA Why talk about board games? What is a modern board game? A little bit about the study of games Board games and design The Settlers of Catan (Klaus Teuber, 1995) This is the first German strategy board game to become a hit in the United States (and worldwide) and what got me into modern board gaming. It is still very popular. Learn more My game room in my Connecticut home and part of my board game collection. I currently own about 1,000 games and run a small weekly board game group. A Sampling of Modern Board Games The slides that follow will give you an idea of the type of board games I study and play. They are good but not necessarily the best games out there. Flash Point: Fire Rescue (Kevin Lanzing, 2011) Learn more Concordia (Mac Gerdts, 2013) Learn more Smash Monster Rampage! (Mike Swindall, 2010) Learn more Battle Sheep (Francesco Rotta, 2010) Learn more North Wind (Klaus Teuber, 2010) Learn more Casa Grande (Günter Burkhardt, 2011) Learn more Scrabble (Alfred Mosher Butts, 1948) This slide is included only because it’s my best Scrabble score ever. I pretty much quit playing the game after this because I’ll never do better. Why talk about board games? • Growing popularity • Cultural artifact • System modeling • Human interaction • Visual design Spiel Fair Around 175,000 people from around the world attend this game convention, which takes place in October in Essen, Germany.
