EuropeMasters edition 2015

The EuropeMasters is a championship for teams (4 players), though the best individual player is also rewarded. During the tournament 4 different games will be played, resulting in 4 rounds of play. At each round a single game title will be played by all players simultaneously.

Based on complex algorithm, a playing schedule will be generated; with result that each round a player will always compete at 3 new players, all of different nationalities. That is for the rounds 3 and 4. Based on feedback received from our participants we have dropped this restriction in the first two rounds. So it could happen that maximum two teams of the same nationality compete against each other. The result is that the EC champion always will have played against no. 2 making the competition even harder.

Per round a player can earn up to 5 points by winning the games at his table. The maximum team score is therefore 20 points per round. And a maximum 80 points throughout the whole tournament.

Besides a very friendly atmosphere, the gameplay is highly competitive, the final scoring is always very close and the winner is determined after finishing the last game.

History of European Championship Boardgaming

How it all began

The European Championship Boardgames has a long and rich history. It all started back in 1976 when KRONE, a German cigarette company, founded a games club. In 1977 the first championship for individual players was held in Berlin, followed in 1978 with a championship in Ostsee. This was the last championship for individuals.

Sven M. Kübler participated at the championships in Ostsee and encountered there the joy of tournament play. But he also noticed that there was a drawback with a tournament type for individuals in the sense that luck dominates the championships. A tournament with teams would eliminate the luck factor significantly.

Intergame

In the early years of SPIEL Sven was able to convince the organizer Friedhelm Merz that the SPIEL would be the ideal convention to organize the German championships. At that time the Spiel was held in the "Volkshochschule", a school building in Essen.

In 1983 the first German championship was held and 20 teams participated. Much was learned from this first tournament and the years after the chaos remained, but the planning improved and the tournament developed. In 1987 Sven decided to stop with the organization of the German championships. In 1988 the SPIEL did not hosted the German championships anymore, but instead Friedhelm Merz decided to have a European Championship organised. This tournament was founded under the name Intergame. In the first years Peter Janshoff set the base and on a later stage Peter Gehrmann, followed by Ferdinand de Cassan, continued the tournament.

In 1993 Friedhelm Merz requested Sven to take over the organization of Intergame. In the six years to come Intergame attracted each year 24 teams from different European countries to compete for the European title. In the meantime SPIEL has grown out to the largest game fair in Europe and was no longer located at the "Volkshochschule", but at the convention hall in Essen. Unfortunately this has led to an increase of costs to organize the championships. Also other tournaments were organized, consuming available budget of potential sponsors.

Therefore in 1998 the last Intergame was being held.

EuropeMasters edition 2015

EuropeMasters

Ronald van Lent participated with the “Flying Dutchmen” in the 1997 and 1998 edition of the Intergame. After the news that Intergame was not to be organized anymore, he decided to pick up the gauntlet. With the support of Sven a restart of the championships took place in 2000 at the Gen Con Benelux convention in the Netherlands. A new name is introduced: EuropeMasters. Though a new name was introduced, the tournament structure remained the same. And the restart was a big success and exceeded any expectations. Since 2001 EuropeMasters moved to the Spellenspektakel, the largest game fair in the Benelux. In 2003, after an absence of 4 years, the European Championship is finally returning to the Spiel in Essen.

With the qualification rounds and national championships throughout Europe taken into account, an estimated amount of more than 2000 players are involved and compete to take part at EuropeMasters where only one team can be the winner of the European title. The 2004 edition was a special edition, as it was the 5th anniversary of the EuropeMasters with 25 teams (100 players) participating from UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Suisse, Austria, Italy and Czech Republic. In 2009 we celebrated our 10th year anniversary with a total of 34 teams (136 players!), including players of Scandinavia: Finland and ....and this is not the final goal, each year the number of players as nationalities participating is growing.

The edition of 2015 will consist of 32 teams participating from the following countries: UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, and Canada.

Gioco

Gioco is the mascot of EuropeMasters and is exclusively designed by the Dutch sculptor Jolanda Kleiss, ArtiSpirit.

The sculpture represents both a cheering as a victorious pawn. Though the model is asymmetric, it is properly balanced. The same counts for the skills needed of the players in our competition. Each game has its own gaming mechanism and players have to handle some time constraints. To be able to master this all, will make a player become victorious as European Champion.

As from 2014 onwards Panda Game Manufacturing, based in Canada, will sponsor the championships by producing the sculptures. PGM produces game(component)s with quality control as top focus. Panda GM was founded in early 2007 to provide tabletop game publishers with high quality overseas manufacturing services. Being avid gamers, Panda GM understand the attention to detail required to produce games that will satisfy both casual consumers and hard-core hobbyists.

Short list 2015

Each year the organisation searches for interesting and challenging games for the EuropeMasters tournament. This process starts already at the SPIEL one year prior the event and last until approx. April/May. In this period the organisation reviews new international releases. Some elements taken into account are the gaming mechanism, fun factor, level of luck (better the absence of it), suitability for tournament play and the overall playing time.

Of the games reviewed a first selection of 8-10 games is being made. These games form the nomination or short list. The nominees are play tested and analysed further where we try to get a mix of 4 tournament games, with significantly different gaming mechanisms and an overall playing time to fit in a single day’s tournament. This selection process is not based on the individual games, but the overall mix.

For this year event the tournament games to be played are:

 Deus – Pearl Games (Belgium)  ZhanGuo – What’s Your Game (Italy)  Orléans – dlp games (Germany)  Five Tribes – Days of Wonder (France)

Our other nominees are:

 AquaSphere – H@ll Games (Germany)  Die Staufer – Hans im Glück (Germany)  Mangrovia – Zoch (Germany)  Kraftwagen – ADC Blackfire Entertainment GmbH (Germany)  Fresh Fish – 2F Spiele (Germany)

News from the depths! The AquaSphere is a research facility stationed deep below the ocean’s surface, and your skilled team — consisting of an engineer, a scientist, reprogrammable bots and exploratory submarines — is trying to gather as much data as possible. The game board in AquaSphere has two main areas: A research station comprised of six sectors in which your scientist conducts experiments and a headquarters where your engineer supervises preparation of the bots.Through actions such as improving your lab, sending out submarines, collecting crystals, and examining octopuses, you expand the abilities of your team or gather knowledge points, which are necessary to win. Additional challenges result from the limited size of your lab, which is your personal stock; you can increase the size of your lab, which makes life easier, but this costs valuable time. AquaSphere is a challenging game of strategy and tactics with different paths to victory that requires planning in advance as well as skillful use of short- term opportunities.

In 1888, Bertha Benz, wife of car pioneer Carl Benz, undertook the first long-distance (relatively speaking) overland drive in an automobile from Mannheim to Pforzheim in Germany. On her way, her car ran out of gasoline, so she had to get the correct chemicals to keep going. Thus, the city drugstore of Wiesloch became the world’s first gas station.Very quickly, the automobile — the “Kraftwagen” — became a common means of transportation, and shortly thereafter the first Grand-Prix races were conducted at the Nürburgring and the AVUS.Only forty years later, Germany possessed a dense road network. The combustion engine had triumphed over electric and steam drives, and cars were produced on the assembly belt. Manufacturers were also even producing less expensive cars for wider sections of the people.Kraftwagen transfers players to the time when cars came to maturity in Germany and Europe.

If you manage to do so, you will become the rightful successor of the old chief and win the game. You gain Chief points by having the most huts (and the secondmost huts) along each of the eight divine paths monitored by the statues of Gods. Here, in a unique twist on the now-standard “worker placement” genre, the game begins with the meeples already in place – and players must cleverly maneuver them over the villages, markets, oases, and sacred places tiles that make up Naqala. Deus Publisher: Pearl Games – Hall 1/booth C136

Short description:

In Deus, players work to develop their own civilizations in a shared environment. Each player starts the game with five building cards, and on a turn a player either uses one of these cards to construct a building or discard one or more cards to make an offering to a god. Cards come in six colors: red for military, green for resource production, blue for trade, brown for scoring, purple for temples, and yellow for a variety of effects. When you construct a building, you build it in the appropriate location on the modular game board — which is sized based on the number of players with the hexagonal tiles composed of seven landscape “circles” — then you place the card in your personal tableau in the appropriate stack of colored cards and activate the power of all of those cards already in your tableau, starting with the card at the bottom of the stack. When you make an offering, you discard cards, then receive the help of a god associated with one of the cards that you discarded, with the number of cards determining the strength of the associated action. You then refill your hand to five cards. The game ends either when all the barbarian villages on the game board have been surrounded and attacked or when all the temples have been constructed. Whoever has the most points wins.

During the five rounds of the game, you must make the best of the few cards you get each round. You can play each card either on your own player board to increase your personal power in the empire, or on the game board to recruit manpower, construct buildings wanted by the emperor, call reinforcements from Qin, and move the armies from kingdom to kingdom. Each player has to choose the best time and best way to play his cards in order to earn the emperor’s favors. Careful, though, because trying to get too much power, or exploiting the workers for personal gain could increase dissatisfaction among the populace, and consequently increase the risk of uprisings in the newly added kingdoms. Whoever is able to make the greatest contribution to the emperor’s cause, while at the same time keeping the citizens placid, will be the winner.

Fresh Fish Publisher: Pegasus Spiele – Hall 3/booth L107

Author: Friedemann Friese

Short description:

It’s time for the next market day! As a rising trader, you are trying to get the best spaces for your market stalls. Only the trader with the freshest goods will get the most customers. In Fresh Fish you try to build your market stalls as close as possible to the matching delivery trucks on a huge market square. A delivery of goods directly from the delivery truck into the market stall is not allowed; at least one path space must lie between them. Unfortunately the competition between the traders is quite intense, so you will block each other from the shortest paths with your market stalls. Neutral flea market tables will get in the way, too. To secure the prime spaces for your market stalls, you must buy the stall tiles cheaply at an auction — but if you bid too little and lose the auctions you may later get a space much further away. At the end of the game you add all the paths between your market stalls and the delivery trucks, then subtract the saved coins from this sum. The player with the lowest value wins as he offers the freshest goods to his customers!
