  • The Tony-Award-Winning Creators of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon
Report on the January-February 2017 University of Virginia Events around Les Misérables Organized by Professor Emeritus Marva Barnett Thanks to the generous grant from the Arts Endowment, supported by the Provost’s Office Course Enhancement Grant connected to my University Seminar, Les Misérables Today, the University of Virginia hosted several unique events, including the world’s first exhibit devoted to caricatures and cartoons about Victor Hugo’s epic novel and the second UVA artistic residency with the award-winning creators of the world’s longest-running musical—artists who have participated in no other artistic residencies. These events will live on through the internet, including the online presence of the Les Misérables Just for Laughs scholarly catalogue and the video of the February 23 conversation with Boublil and Schönberg. Les Misérables Just for Laughs / Les Misérables Pour Rire Exhibit in the Rotunda Upper West Oval Room, Jan. 21-Feb. 28 Before it was made into over fifty films and an award-winning musical, Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables was a rampant best seller when it appeared in 1862. The popular cartoonists who had caricatured Hugo for thirty years leapt at the chance to satirize his epic novel. With my assistance and that of Emily Umansky (CLAS/Batten ’17), French Hugo specialist Gérard Pouchain mounted the first-ever exhibit of original publications of Les Misérables caricatures— ranging from parodies to comic sketches of the author with his characters. On January 23, at 4:00 p.m. he gave his illustrated French presentation, “La caricature au service de la gloire, ou Victor Hugo raconté par le portrait-charge,” in the Rotunda Dome Room to approximately 25 UVA faculty and students, as well as Charlottesville community members associated with the Alliance Française.

  • Les Miserables – Character List
Les Misérables – Character List Jean Valjean – an ex-convict striving to break through prejudice, the past and his own anger to build a new life for himself. A man who has made some poor choices, but who redeems himself repeatedly with acts of selfless generosity and love. Inspector Javert – a man of duty who relentlessly hunts Valjean through the years when he breaks parole. He sees the world and its people in terms of black and white and believes that no one – including himself – is capable of change or redemption. Fantine – a woman who has been abandoned by her lover and who seeks to support herself and her child, Cosette, first by reputable work and then by selling everything she has, including her body. Life has not been kind to her. Cosette – adopted by Valjean after her mother’s death, Cosette has been protected and raised, unaware of the pasts of her mother or adopted father. She falls in love with the student Marius, upon their first meeting on the streets of Paris. Marius – a young student who is searching for himself and his purpose through his studies and in the revolutionary ideas of his peers. He is a casual friend of Eponine, but his heart is won in a chance meeting with Cosette. Eponine – the daughter of Cosette’s foster parents, the Thenardier’s, she has followed in her parents’ footsteps to a life on the streets, taking what she needs and wants from anyone not strong enough to protect it. The one thing she cannot have is the love of Marius.

After each viewing session we spent several Special Learners days talking about the plot, characters, settings, This resource was developed with the following and so forth. My main goal was to make sure special learners in mind: they understood what was happening in each scene, and how each scene related to the Traditional Classroom whole. We would also listen to the songs Homeschooled Students together. This lesson desribes the process we followed and includes a unit assessment with a character quote matching exercise, reflection questions, and two essay questions. The author of this lesson shared it with other educators within the Sophia Institute for Teachers Catholic Curriculum Exchange. • Les Misérables As a Spiritual Practice the Rev
Listening to Les Misérables as a Spiritual Practice The Rev. Dr. J. Carl Gregg 13 March 2016 frederickuu.org Les Misérables premiered on Broadway in 1987, after earlier versions in France and London. I first encountered Les Mis in the early ‘90s. My church youth group took at trip to New York City that included seeing Les Mis. I had never paid attention to the musical before—other than seeing the ubiquitous t-shirts with the image of Cosette on the front. But after seeing the musical live in New York City, suddenly all of my peers were listening not only to the 1987 Original Broadway Cast recording, but also — if you were really cool — the 1989 3-CD Complete Symphonic Recording, featuring the entire score. The musical is based on the Victor Hugo’s massive 1862 novel of the same name, that weighs in at around 1,500 pages. Perhaps the biggest misconception about the musical is that it is set during the French Revolution. La grande revolution started in 1789 and includes all those famous moments such as attacking the Bastille and Marie-Antoinette facing the guillotine. But the insurrection featured in the musical is the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, more than three decades after the end of the French Revolution. Victor Hugo witnessed that 1832 insurrection personally: “He walked the streets of Paris, saw the barricades blocking his way at points, and had to take shelter from gunfire” (Robb 173-4). So, !1 of !8 in the world of our play, it is the eve of the Paris Uprising.

  • Cast Breakdown Broadway Camp 2019 Les Misérables Cast
Cast Breakdown Broadway Camp 2019 Les Misérables Cast/Character Breakdown (as listed on mtishows.com) Jean Valjean Jean Valjean is the hero of the show. It is his life journey that we follow. Jean Valjean is supposed to be stronger than other men, and so he should physically appear robust. He should carry himself confidently onstage and come across to the audience as reasaonably mature and paternal. Valjean’s capacity for change is his greatest asset throughout the story. The key to his character is his great humanity and compassion. Jean Valjean is a vocally demanding role, so cast your best male singer and actor. Gender: Male Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: G#2 Javert Javert is the inspector who serves as antagonist to Jean Valjean. Javert is unswerving in his belief that men cannot change for the better. "Once a thief, always a thief" is his mantra. At first glance, Javert might appear to be the villain of the story, but upon closer examination, it is clear that he is not an evil man. He is a dedicated policeman with a profoundly strong sense of duty. Unlike Valjean, Javert's attitudes are rigid and unmovable. He is stern, forbidding, and lacking in compassion. Your Javert should be a talented actor who can convincingly stand up to Jean Valjean. Javert should have a rich baritone voice and be a good singer. Gender: Male Vocal range top: F#4 Vocal range bottom: F2 Chain Gang The Chain Gang consists of Jean Valjean’s fellow prisoners. There are five soloists (Convicts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5).
