The project aims to reinforce sustainable, scientific data-based management of lamprey stock by proposing common Strategy for lamprey stock management in Latvia and Lithuania, and to increase integration between national bodies responsible for fisheries management. This report is Stage 1 of the total evaluation, and it includes assessment of the cultural and economic importance of lamprey stocks and fishery to the region. The study territory covers all river lamprey fishing area in Lithuania (Sventoji settlement, Nemunas downstream and Curonian lagoon), while Kurzeme region holds approximately 1/3 of the total lamprey catches in Latvia. The purpose of the study is to assess the societal and economic benefits that are generated from the river lamprey stock; to analyse the value-added chain in lamprey-related activities, and the role in maintenance of the traditional identity of the region. The relevant findings of this study will be incorporated by LAMPREY project partners into lamprey stock management Strategy, common for both Latvia and Lithuania. The river lamprey

    SELF­DRIVE THE MILITARY HERITAGE AND ENVIRONMENT OF KURZEME The NATURA 2000 system was established by European Union member states to protect a large series of environmental territories. In Latvia’s case, the system includes territories that were protected before it was set up, as well as 122 new territories. Each EU member state establishes its own system of territories, and these are then joined in the central system. NATURA 2000 territories are of European importance and are environmentally protected. Along this route, the most interesting NATURA 2000 territories include the Zvārde Forest Park, the Embūte Nature Park, the Ziemupe Nature Reserve and the Nature Park of the Ancient Abava River Valley. While in these territories, please be gentle with environmental, cultural and historical values. Keep the “interests” of birds in mind when bird­watching. ROUTE During the Soviet era, Latvia was the western border of the USSR, and that made it a strategic location in which lots of military resources were concentrated. During the Soviet occupation, there were more than 1,000 Soviet military units in Latvia, and they controlled some 600 facilities equalling to more than 10% of the territory of the Latvian SSR. In other words, Latvia was behind the Iron Curtain for nearly half a century. Border guard posts, tank bases, aviation bases, military airfields, storage facilities for weapons and munitions (including nuclear missiles), military espionage facilities and other, similar entities were mostly centred on the shore of the Baltic Sea, where there was a special frontier regime. It was just 20 years ago that people were allowed to be on the beach only during sunlight and in very limited areas.

The researched region embraces for five urban and district municipalities in western Lithuania and Latvia in the total area of 1393.93 km2. The scheme of steps of assessment of sustainability with selected sets of indicators relevant for the sea shore region of Lithuania and Latvia is presented and discussed. Introduction The sea shore or coastal zone’s importance in the country’s economics is one of the greatest in most of world countries because of high natural and human resources located there (Berkes et al., 2003; Gadal and Lekavičiūtė, 2012; Walter, Stützel, 2009). In the sense of spatial planning, it involves a territory in the sea and on land, the boundaries of which are defined by mutual influences and interests (Pužulis, 2010; Spiriajevas, 2012; Burgis, Čiegis, 2012). According to the research in Finland, about 40 % of Baltic sea shore habitat types are threatened (SH7 Red-listed, 2008). The seashore meadows, seasonally flooded meadows and paludified wet meadows are among the most valuable rural landscapes in the coastal areas. This kind of areas has most certainly decreased lately, due to decreased grazing and hay harvesting, drainage activities, cultivation or increased damp construction with shrinking of agricultural activities. However the tourism, recreation, fishing, sports are increasing and their impact on the environment in these regions increases as well.

Though, there are unpleasant facts for the history. One of them – the Holocaust in 1941. It is one of the most dramatic 20th century history chapter for Lithuania as Europe. However, it is better to hear all the truth once in order nobody could reproach that Lithuanians choose to forget it and Jews would be sure that they are not forgotten. "Collective responsibility does not exist – all of us can not take responsibility for the past and the Holocaust. Though, there is a historical responsibility which boundaries are much wider", - Klaipėda University DA Hektoras Vitkus tells about the Jewish genocide [1]. Thus, it is important to be acknowledged with the history of the Holocaust and to understand the point and reasons of it as well. This book is dedicated to a broad society because the massive Jewish massacre sites are included into the heritage register. We consider that every municipality and every eldership would like to know about the monuments in their region. It will also be important for the tour guides as well. People who are interested in regional studies and museology and collect information about their rural districts can supplement their knowledge.

Authors proposed new indicators and justify the using of these indicators as background characteristics in analysing the rurality of municipalities. Precise definition of what is meant by the term rural has proved to be an elusive goal (Pacione, 1989: 1). The term rural has remained an elusive one to define in academic research (Hall, Page, 1999: 179). Rural areas are identifiable as non-urban space (Hoggart, Buller, Black, 1995: 21). By the 1970s the need to replace subjective expressions of rurality with a more objective statistically based view had been widely recognized. P. Cloke in 1977 derived an index of rurality by applying principal components analysis to 16 variables measuring population, housing, occupation and migration characteristics as well distance from urban centers for rural districts in England and Wales. Finally four categories of rural areas were identified (Pacione, 1989). Later the most important world-famous OECD methodology recognized at present in EU has been suggested. The OECD initiated its Rural development programme, of which the rural indicators project is an important part.
