Norway: Exploring New Paths for Ancient Books This page was exported from - Digital meets Culture Export date: Wed Sep 29 3:31:13 2021 / +0000 GMT Norway: exploring new paths for ancient books The Mubil project was established in June 2011 as an interdisciplinary cooperation between the NTNU University Library the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and Percro laboratory of the University of Sant'Anna in Pisa, Italy. The Gunnerus library is the oldest scientific library in Norway, and dates back to 1768 when it was the library of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. The library focuses especially on the academic fields of archaeology, botany and zoology, but is also a general scientific library, and is open to all public. The collection of ancient books and documents of the Gunnerus Library was already digitized and is currently available, therefore the idea is to go further the digitization, investigating the possibilities of creating a virtual learning space within the physical space of the library, allowing the visitors to interact with archive documents, without touching the authentic fragile physical objects. The pictures will be investigated thanks to 3D live and interactive animations which will tell the story the pictures reproduce. Phase two, setting a working laboratory in the Library, to create a hybrid environment (physical and immersive) where the visitor is allowed to experiment with a 3D digital copy through an augmented board in an immersive virtual environment. The experiment has a clear educational objective: to test the learning outcome of the users. In facts, with 3D reconstructions the user remains a passive viewer, while the project aims to create an active participation and therefore to stimulate knowledge seeking through a perception-action procedure. The laboratory will have 3 levels: the first level will allow exploration thanks to multimedia movies of objects and tools belonging to the university Museum, the second level will allow deeper interaction, and the third level will be an active phase where the user can share his personal learning experience to enhance the collective knowledge. The application will also be accessible through the Internet. Bulletin of the History of Archaeology, 24: 9, pp. 1–13, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/bha.249 PAPER ‘A Discovery of Quite Exceptional Proportions’: Controversies in the Wake of Anders Nummedal’s Discoveries of Norway’s First Inhabitants Heidi Mjelva Breivik* and Ellen J. Grav Ellingsen† Around the beginning of the twentieth century archaeologists believed that Norway was not inhabited until the Late Stone Age. In 1909 two pieces of flint, found by the school-teacher Anders Nummedal, launched an extensive debate about the prehistory of Norway, which in time led to the acknowledgement that there was an Early Mesolithic (9500–8000 BC) settlement of the country. However, Nummedal’s lack of archaeological education worked against him when he tried to date the many flint sites he found later on, and well-established researchers found his theories about Stone Age settlements unconvincing. He was regarded as an unskilled teacher who did not know the first thing about archaeological methods and terminology. Today, Nummedal is considered to be one of the most influential participants in Norwegian Stone Age research, and his discoveries are well known and widely recognized. This paper describes Nummedal’s fight to transform his reputation from ridiculed amateur to respected professional. The resistance he met when presenting his sensational theories is detailed through an extensive review of letters, newspaper articles and eulogies written by his colleagues. Introduction tools, and additionally, by the use of flint microliths.

Introduction Imagine a linguist. He wants to write a biography of the ethnographer, philologist and expert on the Sami language and culture Just Knud Qvigstad. While parts of Qvigstad’s correspondence have earlier been transcribed and published online, many letters he wrote and received are still only accessible as digital images in libraries all over Scandinavia. Now, imagine a literary scholar. They are working on a scholarly edition of Camilla Collett’s writings. They are collaborating with the library that holds the 1 Nachlaß of Collett, which has amongst many drafts of her novels and published works also some 235 letters written as well as received by Collett. The edition, however, focusing on Collett’s writing, will only contain the letters she has penned herself.

  • A Translation of Bishop Gunnerus' Description of the Species
SCIENTIFIC ADVANCES IN POLYCHAETE SCIENTIA MARINA 70S3 RESEARCH December 2006, 115-123, Barcelona (Spain) R. Sardá, G. San Martín, E. López, D. Martin ISSN: 0214-8358 and D. George (eds.) A translation of Bishop Gunnerus’ description of the species Hydroides norvegicus with comments on his Serpula triqvetra TORIL LOENNECHEN MOEN Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, N-7491 Trondheim, Norway. E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: In 1768 J.E. Gunnerus first described the species Hydroides norvegicus (Polychaeta, Serpulidae), the type of the genus Hydroides which today includes close to 90 species worldwide and is the largest serpulid genus. This description has therefore great value as a type description, but as it is written in an old-fashioned Danish/Norwegian language with a font which is hard to interpret, the description is rather inaccessible to most polychaetologists. This paper presents a trans- lation of Gunnerus’ description of H. norvegicus and a brief review of the present day status of the species. Comments on Gunnerus’ description of Serpula triqvetra are also included, as well as references to his correspondence with Swedish nat- uralist Carolus Linnæus regarding the species in question. Keywords: J.E. Gunnerus, Serpulidae, Hydroides, H. norvegicus, Placostegus tridentatus, translation, Lophelia, Pomatoceros triqueter. RESUMEN: UNA TRADUCCIÓN DE LA DESCRIPCIÓN DE HYDROIDES NORVEGICUS POR BISHOP GUNNERUS, CON COMENTARIOS SOBRE SERPULA TRIQVETRA. – En 1768 J.E. • Bishop Gunnerus As Naturalist: His Impact on Biodiversity Research Today
Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskabs Skrifter (Kgl. Norske Vidensk. Selsk. Skr. 2011(2), 109-128) Bishop Gunnerus as naturalist: his impact on biodiversity research today Torkild Bakken, Eli Fremstad and Kaare Aagaard Authors’ address: Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, Section of Natural History, NO- 7491 Trondheim, Norway Email: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Corresponding author: Torkild Bakken, [email protected] Abstract Bishop Gunnerus started his work as naturalist as soon as he arrived in Trondheim. In a pastoral letter to his clergymen he instructed them to collect specimens and information on natural history in their parishes. Gunnerus was a pioneer in natural history among his contemporaries. His description of species (especially of animals), either they were new to science or not, held a high scientific standard and contained detailed information on anatomy and morphological characteristics. In addition, his publications were furnished with high quality illustrations. The publications have shown to be important as reference works and primary sources. Our publication enumerates, for the first time, that the original material from Gunnerus’ collection contains botanical and zoological type specimens. In addition the collection contains specimens that are potential types, or at least are topotypic specimens. Aspects of Johan Ernst Gunnerus' life and work. DKNVS Skrifter 2, 2011 Key words: Natural history collections, history of science, type specimens, herbarium TRH, Flora Norvegica. Introduction One of Bishop Johan Ernst Gunnerus’ main achievements to science was the founding of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters.
