What a wonderful Easter Chapel service we had at School led by Year 12 reading the Easter story from the Gospel of John. The singing from the whole School was inspira- tional, supported so ably by our instrument group. It was wonderful that so many parents and family members could Term 1 Issue 1 share this occasion with us. April 2016 The purpose of this newsletter is to review the term that is almost over and to let you know some important dates for the first half of Term 2. TERM ONE IN REVIEW Parent/Guardian Information Nights Your feedback on these occasions was that we have been able to convey the School expectations and guidelines in supporting learning at home. The attendance this year was very good. We see these occa- sions as vital in creating the link between School and home. The Senior Hospitality students excelled in catering for us on all these occasions. I am sure you will agree! Module Two (Years 9 & 10) School Camp What a varied week with the most magnificent weather on the South Coast. Our students were able to complete field trips for Geography, Science, Business and Commerce, as well as strenuous activities such as climbing Pigeon House Mountain and canoeing the Clyde River from Nelligen to Batemans Bay. One of the field trips was a visit to a dairy farm where all the cows are milked by robots! This is a new project in the Nowra district and an amazing application of current technology to agriculture. -

First record of an extinct marabou stork in the Neogene of South America JORGE IGNACIO NORIEGA and GERARDO CLADERA Noriega, J.I. and Cladera, G. 2008. First record of an extinct marabou stork in the Neogene of South America. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 53 (4): 593–600. We describe a new large species of marabou stork, Leptoptilus patagonicus (Ciconiiformes, Ciconiidae, Leptoptilini), from the late Miocene Puerto Madryn Formation, Chubut Province, Argentina. The specimen consists mainly of wing and leg bones, pelvis, sternum, cervical vertebrae, and a few fragments of the skull. We provisionally adopt the traditional system− atic scheme of ciconiid tribes. The specimen is referred to the Leptoptilini on the basis of similarities in morphology and intramembral proportions with the extant genera Ephippiorhynchus, Jabiru,andLeptoptilos. The fossil specimen resembles in overall morphology and size the species of Leptoptilos, but also exhibits several exclusive characters of the sternum, hu− merus, carpometacarpus, tibiotarsus, and pelvis. Additionally, its wing proportions differ from those of any living taxon, providing support to erect a new species. This is the first record of the tribe Leptoptilini in the Tertiary of South America. Key words: Ciconiidae, Leptoptilos, Miocene, Argentina, South America. Jorge I. In a period of two weeks most of the southern section of the Reserve including the whole of the Kelly wilderness area was consumed. The long drought and hot summer eventually took its toll of the Reserve. We know from past experience that periodic fires are one of the natural forces which have shaped the Australian bush and helped to produce our distinctive flora. This realisation does not, however, lessen the shock in seeing the Reserve blackened and burnt, seemingly stripped of all life forms. With rain the Reserve will recover and the mountain slopes and plains will again; be covered in their distinctive trees, shrubs and wild-flowers. As we wait for nature to take its course let us use this opportunity to take stock of the problems facing the future management of the Reserve so that we can make a fresh approach to the solution of some of the problem areas. One of the questions which must be addressed fairly quickly is the future of the Gudgenby pine plantation; the fire largely destroyed this plantation and it probably now has little or no commercial value. The remains of the plantation should be removed and the area allowed to regenerate naturally. -
5. Aboriginal Context
5. ABORIGINAL CONTEXT 5.1 Tribal boundaries The two major tribal groups in the Wells Crossing to Iluka Road project area are the Gumbainggar and the Yaygir. Tindale (1940) places a Kumbainggiri (Gumbainggar) tribe in the area from the headwaters of the Nymboida River across the range to Urunga, Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Glenreagh and Grafton. The Gumbainggar tribe spoke a language belonging to the Kumbainggeric Group. As this tribal group covered such a large, environmentally diverse area it is probable that the language contained three or four dialects. The large territory may have supported a population of between 1,200 and 1,500 people (Hoddinott 1978). The boundary between this group and the Yaygir (Jiegera) to the east is difficult to establish. While Tindale (1974) places the Yaygir downstream from Grafton from the south bank of the Clarence west to Cowper and south to Wooli, Heron (1991), after oral research, placed the boundary from Corindi Beach north to Black Rocks and taking in Ulmarra in the west. In contrast to the Gumbainggar, the Yaygir covered a small area, but the availability of resources both from the ocean and the Clarence River meant that the area could support a larger population. Byrne (1985) estimated a population density of 6 people to 2 km², giving a total population of 800 before white settlement. These areas are bounded to the north by the Badjelong (Bandjalong) and to the south by the Dangaddi tribal groups. 5.2 Previous archaeological studies in the region Although archaeological research has been carried out in the Coffs Harbour-Grafton region of NSW for a number of years, very little research has been conducted in the Yamba area. -

Jabiru mycteria is one of the largest flying birds on earth, being the largest in the Americas and one of the three stork species found there. Adult jabiru storks can reach 1.2m tall with a wing span of 2.6m. Their bill is large and black, somewhat upturned, with lengths of up to 30cm (Fig. 1). Males are larger than females, and both sexes can be identified by the band of red skin at the base of the neck. Adult storks possess all-white plumage on the body. The head and neck lacks feathers except for a cluster of grey feathers on the back of the head. The juveniles have white feathers with greyish-brown edges (McKinley, 2006; Borjas, 2004). DISTRIBUTION. Jabiru mycteria is native to South American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Belize, Colombia, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela (Fig. 2). Jabirus can have also been sighted in Mexico, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, United States and Uruguay (IUCN, 2016). KAI-IL IN two recent papers Clark (19'69) and Curry-Lindahl (1970) have reported spread-wingpostures in storks and other birds and discussed someof the functionsthat they may serve. During recent field studies (1959-69) of all 17 speciesof storks, I have had opportunitiesto observespread-wing postures. in a number of speciesand under different environmentalconditions (Table i). The contextsin which thesepostures occur shed somelight on their possible functions. TYPES OF SPREAD-WING POSTURES Varying degreesof wing spreadingare shownby at least 13 species of storksunder different conditions.In somestorks (e.g. Ciconia nigra, Euxenuragaleata, Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis, and ]abiru mycteria) I observedno spread-wingpostures and have foundno referenceto them in the literature. In the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) I observedonly a wing-droopingposture--with the wings held a short distanceaway from the sidesand the primaries fanned downward--in migrant birds wetted by a heavy rain at NgorongoroCrater, Tanzania. Other species often openedthe wingsonly part way, in a delta-wingposture (Frontis- piece), in which the forearmsare openedbut the primariesremain folded so that their tips crossin front o.f or below the. tail. In some species (e.g. Ibis leucocephalus)this was the most commonly observedspread- wing posture. All those specieslisted in Table i, with the exception of C. ciconia,at times adopted a full-spreadposture (Figures i, 2, 3), similar to those referred to by Clark (1969) and Curry-Lindahl (1970) in severalgroups of water birds. -

RED ALERT Focus on South Africa’s threatened birds Saddle-billed Stork f you’ve recently returned from a birding trip to one of southern Africa’s large bushveld conservation areas, Iyou could be forgiven for thinking that the Saddle-billed Stork Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis is a widespread and success- ful species. Within the boundaries of, say, the Kruger National Park, you can see this stately and conspicuous species quite readily as it stalks the fringes of many of the dams and rivers. But look for it in similar habitat outside protected areas and you’re likely to be disappointed. In fact, the number of Saddle-billed Storks has probably decreased markedly over the past few decades as the population has steadily receded deeper into the big lowveld parks. Language Recovery of the New South Wales South Coast Aboriginal Languages Part B Language Material Jutta Besold A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University Submitted January 2012 Revised May 2013 Chapter B.2 Dharumba All Dharumba stories were collected and transcribed by Andrew Mackenzie (1818- 1878) and published in the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland in the 1870s. Three of eight stories were also published in Ridley’s (1875) publication. The informants’ place of origin and name is given for some of the stories, both belonged to the Wandandian Tribe, which is based in the area of Nowra and the Shoalhaven River area down towards Ulladulla. Section B.2.2 contains all sentences collected by Mathews and Mackenzie from unpublished and published sources. B.2.1 Dharumba Texts The first three stories are the story of Bundoola. They are presented in chronological order of publication. The first published version of Bundoola and was narrated by Bimmoon, who was a member of the Ulladulla tribe, and who also provided a longer and more elaborate English translation, which is presented as part of text 3. The following version 2 offers a different version by a different informant, Thooritgal, also from the Ulladulla tribe. Another Dharrawal version of this story was told by Les Bundle in Nowra and recorded by Capell (1955), see Dharrawal Text 10. 111 1.
