Vietnam Southern and Central Specialties 15th to 29th February 2020 (15 days) Trip Report Siamese Fireback by Simon Tan Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Glen Valentine Trip Report – RBL Vietnam – Southern & Central Specialties 2020 2 Tour Summary Orange-breasted Trogon by Simon Tan We kicked off our 2020 Southern and Central Vietnam tour in the city of Hue, teeming with history and cultural significance and some wonderful restaurants, making it the perfect place to spend a few pre-tour days ambling around the city and its surrounds. Beginning our long journey south towards the hill forests surrounding the village of Mang Den, our first scheduled birding stop of the day produced the wanted target species in the form of White-faced Plover (a very distinctive, extremely localized, rare and often- split subspecies of Kentish Plover) along the beach adjacent to Bach Ma National Park. In the same area, we added our first of several Light-vented Bulbuls, a female Stejneger’s Stonechat and flocks of fly-over Grey-capped Greenfinches. Continuing west and then southwards, crossing over the Lo Xo Pass after a quick lunch-stop we had an hour or so to find the scarce and exceedingly range-restricted near-endemic Black-crowned Barwing. This good-looking and charismatic species was only discovered as recently as 1996 and is still only known from a tiny area in south-central Vietnam and southern Laos. Roar Solheim Molt stage, wing bar patterns and digital photography as tools for assessing age distribution and recognizing individuals of Great Grey and Snowy Owls PhD Thesis 2019 Faculty of Applied Ecology, Agricultural Sciences and Biotechnology 1 2 Preface My interest for owls started shortly after birds captured my fascination, when a small Pygmy Owl perched in a birch tree outside my classroom window. I was twelve, I was lost, and I have been lost to the world of owls ever since. I have been fortunate to meet all ten species of owls which regularly breed in Norway, and have had the opportunity to study several of them at close range. Since 1995 I have been employed as a Senior Curator in Zoology at the Agder Natural His tory Museum in Kristiansand, which in 2017 became an integrated university museum under Agder University. My position has made it possible to work in the border zone between life and death, combining studies of free living owls with skin studies in scientific museum collec tions. I am grately indepted for the opportunity my employers have granted me for these studies, and finally giving me time to compile my work into this PhD thesis. Petter Wabakken at Evenstad, Inland Norway University, has been a great friend and ispirator for many years, and we have shared passion and fascination for wildlife since our student days at the University of Oslo. He strongly urged me to appl y for the PhD studies at Evenstad, and I am very thankful for his thrust, and interest in my work. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. First record of an extinct marabou stork in the Neogene of South America JORGE IGNACIO NORIEGA and GERARDO CLADERA Noriega, J.I. and Cladera, G. 2008. First record of an extinct marabou stork in the Neogene of South America. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 53 (4): 593–600. We describe a new large species of marabou stork, Leptoptilus patagonicus (Ciconiiformes, Ciconiidae, Leptoptilini), from the late Miocene Puerto Madryn Formation, Chubut Province, Argentina. The specimen consists mainly of wing and leg bones, pelvis, sternum, cervical vertebrae, and a few fragments of the skull. We provisionally adopt the traditional system− atic scheme of ciconiid tribes. The specimen is referred to the Leptoptilini on the basis of similarities in morphology and intramembral proportions with the extant genera Ephippiorhynchus, Jabiru,andLeptoptilos. The fossil specimen resembles in overall morphology and size the species of Leptoptilos, but also exhibits several exclusive characters of the sternum, hu− merus, carpometacarpus, tibiotarsus, and pelvis. Additionally, its wing proportions differ from those of any living taxon, providing support to erect a new species. Jabiru mycteria is one of the largest flying birds on earth, being the largest in the Americas and one of the three stork species found there. Adult jabiru storks can reach 1.2m tall with a wing span of 2.6m. Their bill is large and black, somewhat upturned, with lengths of up to 30cm (Fig. 1). Males are larger than females, and both sexes can be identified by the band of red skin at the base of the neck. Adult storks possess all-white plumage on the body. The head and neck lacks feathers except for a cluster of grey feathers on the back of the head. The juveniles have white feathers with greyish-brown edges (McKinley, 2006; Borjas, 2004). DISTRIBUTION. Jabiru mycteria is native to South American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Belize, Colombia, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela (Fig. 2). Jabirus can have also been sighted in Mexico, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, United States and Uruguay (IUCN, 2016). Status and Phylogenetic Analyses of Endemic Birds of the Himalayan Region

Thakur* and Vineet Negi Himachal Pradesh State Biodiversity Board; Department of Environment, Science & Technology, Shimla-171 002 (HP), India Abstract.- Status and distribution of 35 species of birds endemic to Himalayas has been analysed during the present effort. Of these, relatively very high percentage i.e. 46% (16 species) is placed under different threat categories. Population of 24 species (74%) is decreasing. A very high percentage of these Himalayan endemics (88%) are dependent on forests. Population size of most of these bird species (22 species) is not known. Population size of some bird species is very small. Distribution area size of some of the species is also very small. Three species of endemic birds viz., Callacanthis burtoni, Pyrrhula aurantiaca and Pnoepyga immaculata appear to have followed some independent evolutionary lineage and also remained comparatively stable over the period of time. Three different evolutionary clades of the endemic bird species have been observed on the basis of phylogenetic tree analyses. Analyses of length of branches of the phylogenetic tree showed that the three latest entries in endemic bird fauna of Himalayan region i.e. Catreus wallichii, Lophophorus sclateri and Tragopan blythii have been categorised as vulnerable and therefore need the highest level of protection. ANWAR HOSSAIN Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh Key words: Birds, Status, Seasonal occurrence Abstract A study was conducted on the status and seasonal occurrence of the birds in Dhaka University campus, from July, 2013 to February, 2014. During the study period, 54 species of birds belonging to 10 orders, 27 families and 47 genera were recorded. Of the recorded species of birds, 10 (19%) species were found as migrants and 44 (81%) as residents. Out of total species, 14 (26%) were identified as very common, 7 (13%) common, 10 (19%) uncommon, and 23 (43%) as rare. Of the resident species, 14 (25%) were very common residents, 26 (48%) common residents, 3 (6%) uncommon residents, 1 (2%) was rare resident and of the migrants, 7 (13%) were common winter visitors and 3 (6%) were found as uncommon winter visitors. From the study site, 28 (52%) species of passerine birds were observed and remaining 26 (48%) were non‐passerines. The highest number of birds was recorded in dry period/winter season (November ‐ February) and the lowest in wet period/monsoon (July ‐ October). Introduction Bird is a group of warm‐blooded, egg‐laying vertebrates of the class Aves having its body covered with feathers and forelimbs modified into wings(1,2). They have relatively large brain, keen sight and acute hearing, but little sense of smell. They share a common ancestry with reptiles and are believed to be evolved on the earth more than 150 million years ago(2‐4). -
