Top Line PGA Club Professional Media Summary

The PGA Media and Public Relations staff utilized a multi-tiered effort to promote the 20 PGA Professionals, who represented 18 states and 17 PGA Sections. In addition, PGA Master Professional Rick Anderson, the PGA Director of golf at Athletic Club was one of the most featured host professionals ever in PGA Championship media coverage.

In early July, we reached out to the top 20 to coordinate a second-of-its-kind group photo of the participating PGA Club Professionals and had several followup coordinating alert emails. They gathered with the Wanamaker Trophy on the 18th green. The photo and a news release was transmitted to PGA Sections, PGA.com, player hometowns, golf industry publications and media.

PGA Magazine published the photo in its September issue, as part of Championship coverage. PGA.com promoted the photo and story on the top 20 on the micro-site the week of the PGA Championship.

The Media Relations staff worked closely with Times golf columnist Bill Pennington, who wrote a feature story on the 20 PGA Club Professionals who were competing in the Championship. The story was the most viewed sports story on NYTimes.com on Thursday, Aug. 11. Danny Balin, Brian Cairns, Stuart Smith were featured and quoted in the piece. Craig Stevens and Sean Dougherty also were featured.

All 20 PGA Club Professionals received local media coverage prior to, during or following the 93rd PGA Championship. The local media included T.V. affiliates, web sites and daily newspapers.

Other Public Relations Initiatives Included:

 A PGA Club Professional specific e-kit was sent to local media for 20 PGA Professionals on the Monday prior to the Championship.  Interviews were conducted with all 20 PGA Professionals throughout the PGA Championship, with quotes transmitted and performance information sent to hometown media. Many of the interview transcripts were used by local media for stories on the local PGA Professionals and also included in online content.  We conducted web interviews with six PGA Club Professionals during PGA Championship week. They included two interviews with Low PGA Club Professional following his third and final rounds. The web interview link was posted on the 93rd PGA Championship micro site on PGA.com and on the homepage of PGALinks.com.  Nearly 1,800 unique visitors watched Web interviews during the Championship. Interviews included: Danny Balin, David Hutsell, Brian Cairns, and Mike Small.  Mike Small, Hutsell and Marty Jertson appeared on Sirius XM Radio to discuss the opportunity of playing in the PGA Championship.  Hutsell also conducted a Skype interview with “Capital Golf Weekly” leading up to the Championship.  Danny Balin appeared on ’s “The Golf Fix,” where he discussed instruction and competing in the PGA Championship.  Craig Stevens and Scott Erdmann were interviewed by Golf Channel’s “Morning ,” to discuss their PGA Championship experience.  Being the only Georgia PGA Section qualifier, Stevens was also interviewed on site by many local Georgia media.

2  During the CBS Friday, Aug. 12 Highlight program, Scott Erdmann was featured along with . The two shared a practice round earlier in the week, and are parents of an autistic child.  Following his final round of play, Small was interviewed by PGA Video (Thaler Media), PGA.com (during live streaming coverage of the Championship) and Sirius/XM Radio to discuss his experience of making the cut in the 93rd PGA Championship and being the Low PGA Club Professional.  The Communications Department assisted the PGA Broadcasting Department in selecting five PGA Professionals who earned PGA Championship berths to be featured July 31 in the CBS-sponsored “Road to the PGA Championship” one-hour special. “The Road to the PGA Championship" was produced by the Golf Channel also airs on Golf Channel four times leading into the PGA Championship.

THREE-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION MIKE SMALL CLOSES BIG WEEK AT AS LOW PGA CLUB PROFESSIONAL

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – For the second time in five years, Mike Small of Champaign, Ill., rose to the top among his peers to stand on the 18th green for a crystal bowl tribute in a PGA Championship. The men’s head coach at the University of , who has built the cold-weather school into a top-10 collegiate golf powerhouse, turned in an 8-over- 78 Sunday at Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands Course. Though not the 18-hole finale he had wanted, Small’s 72-hole total of 12-over-par 292 represented the top effort among 20 PGA Club Professionals in the Season’s Final Major. “It was great to have my family there and supporting me. I didn't finish how I wanted to but there were spots and places where I played well,” said Small, who competed in his 10th career major and made his third cut in seven PGA Championship appearances. “It was just special to compete and represent PGA members everywhere. It doesn't get much more special than that. I was pulling all week for ‘Strick’ [] and D.A. [Points]. They are both Illinois guys and it would have been really cool to be on the 18th green next to them. With any Champion on the 18th green, it's cool, you can feel the energy from them.” In 2007, Small stood on the 18th green at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., and accepted the crystal bowl before the Wanamaker Trophy was presented to four-time PGA Champion . Now it’s back to work for Small, who said that any appearance he makes in a PGA Championship elevates his recruiting at Illinois. “I have to get recruiting,” he said with a smile. “I need to see where my team and players are at and get back to the grind.” Ever the competitor, Small said that his even-par start on the front nine had him believing that he could turn in his best round of the week. “I really started well but got into trouble and it went sideways a bit,” he said. “If you are not able to hit the fairways, you are in a lot of trouble on this course. This is the fastest and driest major I have ever played in, but it was fun to represent all the members of The PGA of America. In the end, only one guy leaves happy from every tournament. It's the guy that wins. It's still a great experience every year.”

By BILL PENNINGTON JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — There are golf professionals, and there are professional golfers. The former teach lessons, run local tournaments and take cash for greens fees and other services at the counter. The latter travel the world on a pro tour, usually have a personal coach or two, and frequently cash some hefty competition checks.

The two groups mingle marginally, if at all. Except for one week a year.

Since the P.G.A. Championship is sponsored by the organization that represents the roughly 28,000 American professionals, 20 spots in the field of 156 are reserved each year for working everyday club pros.

And so you have scenes like this from Wednesday’s final practice round when , the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world, waved toward Stuart Smith, a club pro from Reno, Nev. Donald wanted Smith, who was waiting in the ninth fairway, to hit up to the elevated ninth green where Donald stood.

“I saw him wave and as I got ready to swing I thought, It’s going to make headlines if I hit a poor shot and nailed him in the head,” Smith, 43, said. “But that didn’t happen, and you know, when I got there he had a big smile on his face and was shaking my hand.”

Then there was the scene on the practice putting green when Brian Cairns, a teaching pro from the Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center in Plymouth, Mich., badly misjudged the ultra-speedy green at the Atlanta Athletic Club and knocked his first putt way past the hole. The ball rolled and rolled until it was close to where was practicing.

As Cairns sheepishly retrieved his wayward ball, Mickelson turned and said, “Club pro, right?”

But Mickelson also offered his hand to shake.

“He congratulated me for getting into the tournament and talked with me for a while,” said Cairns, who is 47. “That was really flattering. I think the tour pros welcome us. They know we are part of the event.”

It has been this way for more than 40 years as the P.G.A. of America has always made room for some of its own. In 1968 there were 64 club professionals in the field. The number was reduced to 40 in 1980, 25 in 1995 and 20 in 2006.

The club pros qualify by being one of the top 20 finishers at the P.G.A. Professional National Championship. This year’s group ranges in age from 29 to 55, with nine playing in their first P.G.A. Championship, one of golf’s four majors. They come from all over the country. But wherever they hail from, the club pros see their presence as symbolic. They are delegates sent from the greater working golf community: club-swinging envoys tethered to the other 28,000 toiling away at private and public golf courses, driving ranges and other golf complexes.

“Maybe some of the touring pros don’t like it that we get 20 spots,” said Danny Balin, an assistant pro from Greenwich, Conn., and the youngest of the club pros in the event. “But I think the majority of them know that while they get most of the attention and help make golf popular, we are the ones at the grass-roots level keeping the game going by getting people out there and teaching them to play better.

“Golf probably doesn’t grow without either of us.”

Scanning the biographies of the 20 club pros who will off in Thursday’s first round, it is clear there was no one path to the 2011 P.G.A. Championship. Balin, who did not start playing competitive golf until he was 22, rises at 5 a.m. every day so he can practice for two hours before he starts an eight-hour day of lessons or other club-related work. He practices for another two or three hours afterward. Smith, meanwhile, had an active competitive background, including playing professionally overseas in his 20s, but now says he plays on average just 27 holes every two weeks.

Balin qualified at the four-round club professional national championship by shooting 63 on the final day, leaping from 34th to fourth. Smith was in fourth place with nine holes left to play, then shot 41 on the final nine holes, carded a final-round 78 and finished tied for 12th.

Craig Stevens, 50, from nearby Sandy Springs, Ga., has become a local favorite. He will have his son, Chase, who is also a club pro, caddying for him. Friends of the family plan to come to the tournament wearing T-shirts that read “Team Lumpy,” a tribute to the elder, and slightly rotund, Stevens.

Sean Dougherty of Overland Park, Kan., was hoping his trip to this year’s P.G.A. Championship would provide a boost to his home club, the Milburn Country Club, where the historic clubhouse was gutted by a fire eight months ago.

The record of the club pros in recent P.G.A. Championships has been spotty. Only seven have made the two-day cut in the last five years. Work weeks that usually last six days at most clubs and include dozens of lessons and multiple other responsibilities do not make it easy for club pros to

hone their competitive games.

“I’m a teaching pro,” Cairns said. “I want to do well this week and I’m proud of my competitive record, but nothing is more rewarding than helping somebody play better and enjoy the game more.”

Smith recalled that since he qualified in June for the P.G.A. Championship, his duties have not changed much at the Somersett Country Club in Reno. He has often been too busy to practice much golf.

“I’ve had members see me and say, ‘Do you think Rory McIlroy is preparing for the P.G.A. by setting up the scoreboard for the men’s invitational?’ ” Smith said with a smile on Wednesday. “Another member said, ‘I bet Tiger Woods isn’t getting ready for the P.G.A. by jumping in a cart to go handle a slow play issue.’

“And they are right about that. But I love what I do and I don’t want to stop doing it. While I’m here this week, I’m going to try to hit the best shot I can every time I’m over the ball and I’m going to have fun. And I’m pretty sure I’ll be successful at both.”

I always thought that if I was playing my best, I could play there, but of course there are a million other people who say that.” Erdmann, who works as an assistant golf pro at Oswego Lake Country Club in Lake Oswego, will take to the fairway with some of the biggest names in the sport from 22 countries, including Tiger Woods and returning champion of . “There were 312 golfers at nationals, and only the top 20 go to the PGA championship,” Erdmann said. “All of a sudden here I am in Atlanta. “It’s been a crazy month.” After competing in smaller tournaments for the last few years, Erdmann’s exceptional season started with a second-place win at the Northwest regional, traditionally one of the toughest regional tournaments in the country. Another second-place win at the national tournament earned him a place at championship, nicknamed “Glory’s Last Shot.” Erdmann has become a local celebrity at the country club where he works, receiving praise from club members and golf pros alike. “I was just the guy who got your clubs and taught the occasional lesson,” he said. “But these last few weeks have been just surreal. I thought when I came back from nationals I’d get some attention but it’s been just a storm of people.” For Erdmann’s co-workers at Oswego Lake Country Club, Erdmann’s success has been a long time coming. “After getting off to such a good start at the nationals, it’s no surprise that he’s at the PGA Championship,” said fellow golf pro Matt Herrera. “He is that good.” Herrera said he was excited that Erdmann had made it so far. “The chance to be there is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Herrera said. “He has always been an impressive player and he’s handled the pressure really well.” But while co-workers may have seen this coming, Erdmann said he never expected anything like this to happen. “It’s been a slow process for me,” Erdmann said. “I’ve been getting just a little bit better every time.”

Unlike pros like Tiger Woods who have been playing golf since childhood, it wasn’t until high school that Erdmann began to think seriously about golf. “I was a bit of a late bloomer,” he said. “When I got to high school I really developed more of a passion for it, and it wasn’t until after high school that I thought that this was what I wanted to do.” Golf pro or pro golfer? This isn’t the end to Erdmann’s PGA tour. In September, he will compete in the PGA Cup, which pits the country’s best golf pros against the best from . Erdmann said he still doesn’t think he will become a , despite his recent success. “I’ve never had real thoughts of playing for a living, other than just dreaming about it,” he said. “But when you are playing really solid like I have been, it makes you think about it a little more.” “There are golf professionals and professional golfers,” Erdmann added. Sean Dougherty’s first time playing in the PGA Championship, or any major or PGA Tour event, came to a close in the second round of the 93rd annual championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga. on Friday evening.

In one of the last groups to go out on the course, Dougherty was within reach of making the cut, the top 70 players out of the 156-pro field, until making a double-bogey six on No. 8, Dougherty’s next-to-last hole of the day. Dougherty finished with a four-over-par 74 matching his first round score.

Dougherty, a Nansemond-Suffolk alum who is the head PGA professional at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kan., made the field as one of 20 club pros to qualify from the PGA Professional National Championship in Hershey, Pa. in June.

Starting on the back nine, Dougherty carded two pars before making birdie on the 551-yard par-five No. 12. He birdied No. 12 in both rounds.

Dougherty finished the back nine in even par, a 35. He made bogeys on No. 2, a 512-yard par four, and the par-four No. 6, to go to six-over par. The final cut line was four-over par.

Overview: The PGA of America leveraged the PGA Championship hosted in Johns Creek, GA to communicate to Georgia local, state and national elected officials the impact of golf in Georgia and value of golf courses in local communities.

The PGA Championship Office and Championship Executive Committee had ongoing dialogue at the state level with officials and worked side by side city officials to execute the PGA Championship.

Prior to the PGA Championship week, the PGA hosted outreach events at the 93 rd PGA Championship Ticket Launch by hosting a Government Relations Luncheon at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Monday, July 26, 2010 and participated in Georgia Golf Day Tuesday, March 3, 2011 at the Georgia State Capitol with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal announcing the economic impact of golf in the state of Georgia.

IMPACT OF GOLF IN GEORGIA LUNCHEONLUNCHEON---- TUESDAY AUGUSAUGUSTT 9T 9 More than 100 of Georgia’s elected officials, community leaders and golf industry leaders met at the 93 rd PGA Championship on Tuesday Aug 9, celebrating golf as a key industry contributing to the vitality of its economy from employment, capital investment, tourism, significant charitable donations and the export of goods and services.

Discussing golf’s impact was PGA of America President Allen Wronowski, Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, and Joe Steranka, chief executive officer of The PGA of America.

“Job creation is at the top of the list of all governors,” said Steranka. “The challenge is to leverage golf’s assets. What we do know is that golf is in the DNA of this state. When you have someone like a you are off to a great start. Georgia has not taken it for granted, and the impact of golf is $5 billion for this state. The governor oversees an $18 billion budget. I remember what Governor Deal said on Georgia Golf Day last March, when referring to the 57,000 jobs that are related to golf here. ‘Every day is Georgia Golf Day.’ ”

“You do bring us good news,” said Gov. Deal, referring to the estimated economic impact of $50 million by the PGA Championship’s third visit to Atlanta Athletic Club.

“I have a project for you, all of you here. Yesterday we marked the success of the Charles R. Drew Charter School, which lies adjacent to East Lake (some 30 minutes from Atlanta Athletic Club). It was rated the worst public school in the state but now stands atop the list. Its student body spans from kindergarten through eighth grade. Well, all 800 students are receiving golf lessons. If you want a project similar to what has taken place at that school, you would have a good one to follow.”

Deal also challenged all golf leaders to continue to promote health and wellness, as his state combats the No. 1 problem of childhood obesity.

“The emphasis is to get youngsters to exercise and improve their nutrition,” said Deal. “You are all playing an important role in shaping their future.”

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – More than 100 of Georgia’s elected officials, community leaders and golf industry leaders met at the 93 rd PGA Championship Tuesday, celebrating golf as a key industry contributing to the vitality of its economy from employment, capital investment, tourism, significant charitable donations and the export of goods and services. In 2009, the size of Georgia’s direct golf economy was approximately $2.4 billion. What we do know is that golf is in the DNA of this state. When you have someone like a Bobby Jones you are off to a great start. Georgia has not taken it for granted, and the impact of golf is $5 billion for this state. The governor oversees an $18 billion budget. I remember what Governor Deal said on Georgia Golf Day last March, when referring to the 57,000 jobs that are related to golf here. ‘Every day is Georgia Golf Day.’ ” Also in March, Georgia’s House of Representatives and Senate each presented resolutions proclaiming 2011 as the “Year of Golf in Georgia” citing golf’s numerous contributions to the state and its direct bearing on jobs, commerce, economic development, and tax revenues for a large number of Georgia’s communities and industries. “You do bring us good news,” said Gov. Deal, referring to the estimated economic impact of $50 million by the PGA Championship’s third visit to Atlanta Athletic Club.

“I have a project for you, all of you here. Yesterday we marked the success of the Charles R. Drew Charter School, which lies adjacent to East Lake (some 30 minutes from Atlanta Athletic Club). It was rated the worst public school in the state but now stands atop the list. Its student body spans from kindergarten through eighth grade. Well, all 800 students are receiving golf lessons. If you want a project similar to what has taken place at that school, you would have a good one to follow.” Deal also challenged all golf leaders to continue to promote health and wellness, as his state combats the No. 1 problem of childhood obesity. “The emphasis is to get youngsters to exercise and improve their nutrition,” said Deal. “You are all playing an important role in shaping their future.”

Atlanta hosts this year’s PGA Championship, bolstering a golf industry that has a $5.1- billion impact on the state’s economy.

When you are the type of golfer who turns A 150-yard par three into a six-stroke cross- country quest over every bit of terrain except the direct route from tee to hole, it’s difficult to imagine contributing to anything beyond sunburn and the nourishment of ticks and mosquitoes.

Nonetheless, all of those hackers (we know who we are), all of the golfers in Georgia, add up to a hefty purse for a golf industry that generates $2.4 billion in direct revenues, a total impact of $5.1 billion for the state’s economy, supporting about 57,000 jobs – all this in the midst of a recession, all this according to the Georgia Golf Economy Report, which ranks our golf economy sixth in the nation.

The report, prepared by SRI International and commissioned by GOLF 20/20 for the Georgia Allied Golf Council, was unveiled with great hoopla (and swag, courtesy of golf industry lobbyists) in March at the State Capitol by a group that included Gov. Nathan Deal and Mike Waldron, executive director of the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA).

“We wanted the legislature to know that we’re not chump change. We employ a lot of people, we pay out a lot in wages, we do a lot for the state. We play an important role in the Georgia economy,” says Waldron.

So, brandishing the study and the big numbers, they tried to raise awareness of golf’s impact to state and local policymakers. The legislature proclaimed 2011 as the “Year of Golf in Georgia.”

But when it comes to raising the awareness of golf in this state, on a massive scale, nothing does it better than the major tournaments (especially the major professional tournaments, which get international live television exposure) that happen here. And for that reason alone, this might as well be the Year of Golf in Georgia.

It’s right there in the proclamation, House Resolution 488, one of the many “whereas” passages: This year, two of the planet’s four major golf championships (“the Majors”) will be played in the same state in the same year for only the sixth time in history.

To which one might respond, “Yeah? So what’s the big deal?” And it would be a fair question because the fifth time two “Majors” were played in the same state in the same year, it happened in Georgia. And the fourth time. And the third.

The Majors, golf’s most prestigious men’s tournaments, are The Masters (April), the U.S. Open (June), the British Open (July) and the PGA Championship (August), each of them one-fourth of the golf “.” One of them is rooted in Augusta, another stays in the U.K., while the U.S. Open and PGA Championship rotate among elite golf courses in the U.S.

“So we can only bid for two of them, and we’ve managed to do pretty well,” says Chris Borders, general manager of Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, the only other place in Georgia besides Augusta to have hosted a Major Championship – the U.S. Open (1976) and the PGA Championship (1983, 2001), which returns to the club’s famous Highlands course this month (August 8-14).

“You literally have to start working 10 years ahead of time to land a Major Championship, and there is a draconian effort involved in hosting one of these,” Borders says.

Sure enough, the PGA made the announcement that Atlanta Athletic Club would be hosting the 2011 PGA Championship during the 2001 PGA Championship, 10 years ago.

It didn’t take 10 years to land the 1976 U.S. Open, though. It took a letter from Bobby Jones, the Georgian who was to golf back in olden days what Babe Ruth was to baseball, what Zeus was to Olympus. Jones had something that Ruth and Zeus never had, though – membership to Atlanta Athletic Club.

“The Major Championships are part of our club’s heritage and history because of Bobby Jones,” says Borders, who has been with the club through all of its Majors.

In November 1971, about a month before he died, the ailing Jones wrote a letter to the Golf Association (USGA) on Atlanta Athletic Club’s behalf, asking that the U.S. Open be brought to his club. Almost five years later, made his 18th-hole “shot heard round the world,” a 194-yard five-iron over water to three feet of the pin, clinching the 1976 U.S. Open.

Downhill Lies It’s a clear Wednesday afternoon in May at Mossy Creek Golf Club, just outside of Cleveland in rural White County. It’s nearly perfect weather, so I’m walking. In fact, I’m taking the scenic route. It’s golf, in of Lewis and Clark. Unencumbered by a scorecard or skill, I’m on pace to shoot my body temperature.

Behind me is a foursome of middle-aged guys, and there’s another foursome immediately behind them. In front is a foursome of ladies, and two guys in front of them. It’s steady business in the middle of a weekday. It’s not overcrowded, but it’s our local contribution to the $936.4 million that golf facility operations contribute in SRI’s statewide impact study (based on 2009 figures and available at www.golf2020.com). That revenue from green fees, membership fees, cart rentals, lessons, food and drink in the clubhouse at Georgia’s 401 golf courses, 35 stand-alone ranges and 25 facilities is the largest portion of golf’s direct impact.

“The allied golf organizations in Georgia work together on issues of common interest in golf, and we commissioned the study because we thought it would be good for us to see our business impact,” Waldron says.

The Georgia Allied Golf Council is made up of members from GSGA, the Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Georgia Golf Course Owners Association, the Georgia Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America and the Georgia Section of the PGA of America.

Together with their national umbrella organizations (who help make up GOLF 20/20), these groups are keen on producing lofty impact reports to address the lack of respect (and free money) their industry has received from the government, specifically for being excluded from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and federal disaster relief.

“We haven’t really been treated fairly,” says Cathy Harbin, director of GOLF 20/20 (based in Florida and managed by the nonprofit World Golf Foundation). “After Katrina, for example, golf courses were lumped in with liquor stores and massage parlors, denied the tax relief and benefits that helped other businesses that were devastated.”

So industry players believe golf – including both public and private courses – has been discriminated against by legislation that has benefited other small businesses.

“It’s almost as if they don’t think the two million people employed by golf courses across the country matter as much as other workers,” Harbin says. “We wanted to show that golf was more than just recreation, that it’s a vital business, often a small business, with a large and diverse workforce.”

That message of “hey, what about us,” is carrying a particularly strident tone in the midst of a global recession and the resultant industry rightsizing. For five straight years, national golf course closings have outpaced course openings. In 2000, says Harbin, 398.5 courses opened across the U.S., an all-time high. Last year, 46 courses opened and 107 closed.

“Some of that is normal as we see a decline in the economy,” Harbin says. “When we were building almost 400 courses a year, we were going way too quickly. Not that you want to see a course close – these are real people, real jobs, real lives – but we really were oversupplied.”

Overall, Georgia’s golf industry has fared better than most states’, but some well-known courses – especially those with housing attached – have suffered major problems: Reynolds Plantation, for example, with a $45-million bank debt could not get a bailout from its residents, and at this writing the massive Lake Oconee development had been turned over to a trustee who was shopping it around to potential buyers.

Last year, Sea Island Golf Club was sold out of bankruptcy; it’s up and running now with new owners. Other golf facilities that have experienced financial difficulties in recent years include Kingwood and Waterfall in northeast Georgia, the -designed Country Club of the South and Horseshoe Bend – all of them sold out of bankruptcy.

No one, it seems, has been untouched. From April 2010 to April 2011, rounds of golf in just the Atlanta area had dropped 12 percent (though there was a rebound in the early part of 2011, and the number of rounds played was ticking upward).

Membership in the GSGA, Waldron says, has dropped 16 percent since 2007. Private club memberships are down – Borders says Atlanta Athletic Club’s have gone down almost 10 percent over the past couple of years.

“It’s alarming and concerning, but the club is large enough and has good enough leadership to manage in these conditions,” Borders says. “Private club membership is somewhere near last place in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.”

Probably somewhere between esteem and self-actualization.

Nonetheless, Borders says the club is drawing heavily from its 1,850 members in helping the PGA put together a small army of volunteers (about 3,000) to work the PGA Champion-ship this month.

Grand Slam Ryan Cannon is uprooting his family and moving to Rochester, N.Y., very soon. First he has to finish what he started several years ago when Cannon moved to Atlanta to fulfill his duties as tournament director of the 93rd PGA Championship.

“We have a playbook for every Championship, with timelines and milestones and activities,” says Cannon, who started his career with PGA of America in Atlanta in 2001, the last time the PGA Championship was here.

Before returning to Georgia in 2008, he lived for almost eight years in Michigan, where he served as tournament director for the 2004 , then the 2008 PGA Championship, both at Oakland Hills Country Club.

“PGA will put a full-time staff on the ground two to four years in advance of the event,” Cannon says. “We’ve already begun meeting with the club and community and getting things organized in Rochester for the 2013 PGA Champion-ship at .”

In Atlanta, Cannon is overseeing an event that will cost PGA of America about $25 million to put on. They’ve built more than 300,000 square feet of temporary facilities at Atlanta Athletic Club – for spectators (they’re expecting about 40,000 a day), corporate hospitality clients, media, volunteers and vendors.

“And the Monday after the Championship is every bit as busy as the final round on Sunday. It’s when we un-build everything that we built over the summer,” Cannon says. “I won’t leave town until everyone feels comfortable about the golf course restoration and reconciliation.”

This year’s PGA Championship in Atlanta, like the previous two and that 1976 U.S. Open, will be played on the club’s Highlands course, a hefty 7,486-yard, par-70 test of character in the Georgia dog-day heat. And if it’s anything like the 2001 version (won by ), or PGA Championships in recent years, it’ll sink about $50 million into the local economy.

The SRI study credits major tournaments with only $37 million in direct economic impact for Georgia, which is really misleading. SRI economist Jennifer Ozawa explains that tournaments like “The Masters and PGA Championship generate much larger economic impacts via the large number of spectators they attract, and this is captured in the tourism impact,” which is nearly $481 million.

This year, Georgia will have had a grand slam of top-level pro tournaments. In addition to The Masters and the PGA Champion-ship, there’s The TOUR Champion-ship (September), which has made a permanent home at East Lake Golf Club, and the McGladrey Classic (October), which returns to Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside course on St. Simons Island.

It’s difficult to pin an economic impact figure on The Masters and Augusta National, with their obsidian-like transparency, but according to Katrina Hollmann, director of marketing communications for the Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau, “It’s the equivalent of about a 13th month of revenue for the hospitality industry.”

However, she quickly adds, “We don’t do economic impact studies. A lot of other people have attempted it, and they come up with numbers, but they’re just estimates and not very reliable.”

The CVB estimated an impact of about $109 million 14 years ago. A more recent estimate from the sports marketing firm Bryton Harry (New York and Osaka) puts the figure at more than $200 million.

The is the final event of the FedExCup race – the competition for the PGA Tour season championship trophy, and an $8-million purse ($1.35 million for the winner) – and features only the top 30 current money winners. The Atlanta Sports Council estimates the annual event’s impact between $30 million and $35 million, with 100,000 spectators for the week.

Last year saw the debut of the McGladrey Classic, a PGA Tour fall-series event, with a sizable purse ($4 million, $720,000 to the winner) and a field of some of the world’s top professionals, like (last year’s winner), former Masters champ Zack Johnson, former star and Davis Love III, who helped create the tournament, and whose brother Mark serves as its executive director.

“So many of the guys on the Tour have migrated here and call this area home now,” Mark Love says. “They bring their buddies, and they love the course, the facilities. What we’re hoping to do is draw a new generation of fans to the Golden Isles, to showcase the area and create a new sports tradition for Georgia.”

Last year the tournament chose the slogan “a new Seaside tradition” and used a shot of Bobby Jones standing on the No. 13 hole.

Forty years after his death, Jones still looms large in Georgia golf, a spectral legend linking Georgia’s four top-level pro tournaments in 2011: His presence captured at Seaside, his founding of Augusta National, his home course at East Lake, and his home club, Atlanta Athletic Club (which sold East Lake and moved to North Fulton in the 1960s).

To this day, there is a tone of genuflection in Chris Borders’ voice when he speaks of Robert Tyre Jones Jr., who he sometimes calls Bobby, and other times Mr. Jones.

“The Majors have changed a bit since he won that Grand Slam in 1930,” says Borders, referring to Jones’ unequaled achievement – winning all of golf’s four Major Championships in a single year. “For one thing, the Masters didn’t exist yet.

“This club has existed for 113 years, first at East Lake and then here. Hosting a Major was something our forefathers had in mind. But if it hadn’t been for Bobby Jones asking the USGA to bring the U.S. Open to his club, we probably never would have begun the process. And all of those Majors we’ve hosted, they might never have happened here.”

PGA Chief Executive Officer Joe Steranka said at the Aug. 9 event that golf has changed the lives of millions of people in the United States.

"Job creation is at or near the top of the list for any governor," he said.

Golf's economic impact in Georgia is $5 billion per year and it creates 57,000 jobs. Having the PGA Championship in Georgia is the capstone of its impact on the state.

"This championship will have an economic impact of over $50 million," he said.

Steranka discussed the other ways golf has impacted the community. Those who play golf seek to help their communities. Local chapters have used the championship to raise $750,000 for their causes. The PGA has also met with representatives from the "Let's Move" campaign and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and sports, since walking the greens and playing golf burns 1,500 calories per round.

"You're not really focused on exercise because you're there to spend time with your friends and family," Steranka said.

One doesn't need to be the biggest or strongest person to play golf — in fact, one can be disabled and still play golf. Golf is also a game one can begin playing at age eight and play for the next eight decades.

Furthermore, city planners would like to have managed, open green spaces rather than jungles and golf courses provide this. Since people must pay to play on golf courses, this provides jobs. Steranka added that one fifth of the $5 billion golf raises for the state comes from tourists visiting places like Sea Island.

Deal spoke about a visit to Drew Charter School in East Lake, near the East Lake Golf Club. The school once performed very poorly but has now been turned around. The students there receive golf lessons.

"Let me issue a challenge to you," he said. "If you need a project, that's a good one."

He said childhood obesity is one of Georgia's major challenges. Golf can help deal with that.

Afterward, Steranka and PGA President Allen Wronowski took questions from the audience after the presentation.

Atlanta Athletic Club President Davis Stewart asked them how the players like the course.

"The superintendent here is just an absolute genius," Wronowski said.

He said the course was absolutely spectacular thanks to club members hitting off mats to avoid damaging the grass in the weeks leading up to the tournament. The players have been raving about the quality of the course and grass.

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle asked whether Tiger Woods or historic players like Jack Nicklaus had a bigger impact on golf and who the next Tiger Woods would be.

Steranka said 's rise owed to the proliferation of public golf courses built by the Works Progress Administration during the New Deal and the 1958 televising of the PGA Championship. However, Woods transcended racial boundaries and had global appeal. He said Palmer had the same impact in his time as Woods did today.

About who the next Woods would be, Steranka has not see who that person would be but suspects he might come from Asia. He also suggested Ricky Fowler could be Woods' successor.

"He's so composed and mature," he said. "He is so wired into social media."

Steranka said golf was the best it ever has been due to global interest and golf's inclusion in the 2016 Olympics.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia will be the focus of the sport of golf in 2011; and

The Atlanta Athletic Club is hosting the 2011 PGA Championship Monday, August 8 through Sunday, August 14, 2011. This year marks the event’s third visit to North Fulton County and puts the Atlanta Athletic Club among a short list of courses that have hosted the event at least three times.

“The PGA’s decision to bring this prestigious event back to Fulton County is an honor and will place our great County in the international spotlight once again,” says County Commissioner Liz Hausmann.

The event is expected to bring 200,000 visitors to the area with an estimated economic impact of $50 million to the area.

The city of Johns Creek is preparing to tee off financially, thanks to the PGA Championship which gets underway Aug. 8, 2011 at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

PGA officials said the week long golf tournament will bring in more than 35,000 spectators a day which will provide a major boost to the local economy.

"History said that in 2001 when this was hosted, the economic council took a look back and said that they thought over $50 million was generated for the region," said Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker.

There are only a handful of hotel rooms remaining in Johns Creek. Max Patel is General Manager of the Hilton Garden Inn and he said he expects to increase his weekend occupancy by 50 percent during the event.

"We've provided complimentary coach buses through the hotels to give guests the easiest way to get there inside the event," said Patel.

Local restaurants are also gearing up for large crowds. Jamie Gonzalez owns Keso Mexican Grill next to the PGA Championship History Exhibit on Medlock Bridge Road and he's already served several golf fans visiting the area.

"It's a great help, it's a great help because it's going to bring a lot of traffic to the area and to the shopping center and hopefully they try us and like us," said Keso Mexican Grill Owner Jamie Gonzalez.

The PGA of America today announced that N.Y.-based Hospital for Special Surgery will become the association's official hospital. HSS intends to launch a new fitness program, "Let's Move on Course," this week at the PGA Championship in Atlanta. PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka was slated to announce the deal today during his state of association press conference. HSS, whose campus is linked to the Weill Cornell Medical Center just off FDR Drive in Manhattan, signed a three-year deal with the PGA. Financial terms were not released. "We're experts at helping people get their mobility back and golfers at all levels represent a segment of the country that we are able to take care of," said HSS President & CEO Louis Shapiro. "This allows us to get the message out and raise our awareness to that community and they can learn more about how to stay healthy and the benefits of playing golf." HSS' new program, "Let's Move on Course," will tee off this week with the hospital handing out 25,000 branded pedometers to fans at the Atlanta Athletic Club. HSS also will have activation opportuunities at thee Ryder Cup, Senior PGA and other championships. The PGA's website, PGA.com, will be the home for HSS' fitness program. "We're really excited about helping the PGA promote golf as a way to stay fit," Shapiro said. HSS specializes in orthopedics, rheumatology and rehabilitation and was recently ranked as the top orthopedic facility by U.S. News & World Report.

The PGA of America and Omega today formally launch a five-year partnership that designates the Swiss watchmaker as the PGA’s official timekeeper. The unveiling is timed in conjunction with the first round of the 93rd PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. The deal gives Omega timekeeper designations at several PGA-sanctioned events, including the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship and PGA Grand Slam of Golf through ‘16, as well as a presence at the ’12 and ’14 Ryder Cups. Omega has also committed to multifaceted timepiece and facility clock programs that are exclusive to PGA of America’s 27,000-plus memberrs. had previously been the PGA's official timekeeper since ’94. Omega earlier this week launcched an extensive advertising campaign in conjunction with the start of the tournament. The cammpaign’s television component features spots running on TNT and CBS, while int’l spots are airing on CNN Int’l, BBC World News and CNBC. The commercial features imagery from Atlanta Athletiic Club with messaging that highlights Omega’s mission to grow the game of golf on a global level.

Print ads have been running in the Int’l Herald Tribune, the Financial Times, Wall Street Journall Asia and the PGA Magazine. Online ads are appearing on NYTimes.com, BBC.com and PGA.com, which has been running an Omega countdown clock since Aug. 1. The company will entertain guests in an on-course chalet that Omega President Stephen Urquhaart described as a “fantastic platform that we can reach out and talk to many consumers.” Urquhart: “The first two days it will be focused basically on consumers who are in the network. Real estate partners, important members of the media, and the second wave, starting Saturday and Sunday, will be more toward the trade and fine retail jewelers.”

WATCH THIS: World Golf HOFer Greg Norman, who began endorsing the Omega brand last year, is in Atlanta helping promote the new partnership, and he said of his relationship with Omega, “They liked what my beliefs were with the game of golf in the Olympics and they loved my beliefs of how we promote the game of golf on the grassroots level.” Norman was very instrumental in helping facilitate a deal between Urquhart and PGA of America Presiident Joe Steranka. Norman felt both entities shared similar goals regarding the growth of the game and they “were both like- minded and powerful brands.” Norman, who began his career as an assistant pro in , said, “I’m a huge, huge fan of the PGA of America ... and I thought it was a great opportunity for Omega." He noted Rolex "had pretty much dominated” the global golf space. Urquhart said golf remains an important part of Omega’s growth as it “provides a perfect statement for our brand.” Urquhart referred to the new pact as “a 365-day-a-year deal” that will allow the company to “do things all year round with all the clubs that are associated with the PGA of America.” He noted golf “is the most played individual sport probably in the world." Urquhart: "It’’s by far the biggest sport in the U.S. market for individuals. ... We are talking to tens of millions oof people -- who are potential customers - - who are involved with golf, play golf and love the game.” HHe said Omega is always looking to add more golf properties to its portfolio. Urquhart: “I could name one or two, but I wouldn’t want to. We have one of the four majors; another major would be fabulous to have.”
