  • Landscape and Art FS 2021 V10
theory lab lecture series Landscape and Art FS 2021 V10 Landscape and art have been intertwined in our culture since time immemori- al, but from the early cave paintings of Lascaux depicting wilderness scenes, to contemporary art forms underscoring the demise of the planet, there is a world of difference. Western art built an idealized representation of landscape derived from literary constructs based on Alberti’s perspective. The one-point perspectives of Nicolas Poussin and the two-point perspectives of Claude Lorrain nurtured our imagination of nature in both the Baroque and Picturesque periods, with allego- rical references supporting these points of view. The intellectual effort behind these carefully crafted constructions mixed Christian symbolism with earlier Greek Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), Paysage avec un mythology seamlessly. This particular period created a durable aesthetic frame- homme tué par un serpent, 1648, National Gallery London. work for landscapes that prevailed through the 19th-century Romantic period to this day. Whether Post-Romantic landscape aesthetics still matter in our strongly de-idealized, systemic and pragmatic world remains doubtful. But the absence of a valid alternative vision poses a serious problem for landscape at present. This absence has yielded a dislocated aesthetic for landscapes, in which the founding concepts of landscape and art are continually confused. This should not, however, be understood as a plea for a return to some foregone Classical period, but rather as a general comment on the facile image production of our age, as well as on how unreflected and unimaginative we have become with the landscapes that surround us.

Reed Hilderbrand LLC Landscape Architecture Executive Committee Board of Trustees American Society of Landscape Architects 636 Eye Street NW Washington, DC 20001-3736 Re: Letter of Nomination for the ASLA Design Medal: Peter Walker REED| HILDERBRAND Dear Executive Committee Members: I am honored to present the nomination for Peter Walker, Principal of Peter Walker and Partners Landscape Architecture, for the ASLA Design Medal. It is my personal view that there is no living landscape architect with a more widely recognized body of work. As a writer and critic, I have worked closely with Pete and have benefitted from his encouragement, guidance, and generosity. As a teacher, I have taught by his example, and I continue to utilize ample references from his built works and body of publications. Perhaps for these reasons I cannot claim complete objectivity in this nomination—but who among us can? We have all benefitted from his example and his effort to make landscape architecture known to the world. My career would have been markedly different without exposure to Pete’s shared wisdom and his works. I think that’s true for many of us, as some notable colleagues will attest. I would like to cite a few key remarks from letters written in support of this nomination. Several of the writers indicated surprise that this honor had not already been bestowed upon Pete. Although he was awarded our society’s highest honor, the ASLA Medal (2004), and has also received IFLA’s Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Gold Medal (2005) for lifetime achievement, the Honor Award of the American Institute of Architects (1992), Harvard’s Centennial Medal (2004), and the University of Virginia’s Thomas Jefferson Medal (2004), he has not been recognized with the ASLA Design Medal.

Groundswell : [brochure] constructing the contemporary landscape Date 2005 Publisher The Museum of Modern Art Exhibition URL www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/117 The Museum of Modern Art's exhibition history— from our founding in 1929 to the present—is available online. It includes exhibition catalogues, primary documents, installation views, and an index of participating artists. MoMA © 2017 The Museum of Modern Art Constructing the Contemporary Landsc ^jrw| Exchange Square, Manchester, England 1998-2000 We need to grasp the truth that our landscape is a built artifact and, as such, must be designed, and therefore is an opportunity and an appropriate place for the expression of personal aesthetics and ideas. The visual quality of our environment defines us as individuals and citizens of a certain place. It becomes internalized and part of our self-image. It defines who we are individually and collectively and ultimately becomes what we are remembered by as a culture. My definition of landscape is not limited to our natural environment, or to just parks, waterfronts, and plazas, but more importantly focuses on the landscapes we are building for ourselves in which we work, live, shop, commute, and generally exist. In spite of my reputation as a nature-hater, I am simply misunderstood. I am protesting this disjuncture between word and deed as it concerns nature and interferes with our ability to create positive environments for both man and beast. — Martha Schwartz Martha Schwartz, Martha Schwartz, Inc., Cambridge, Massachusetts Competition drawing with artificial palm trees. Honorary Membership Nomination Narrative Nominee: Philip J. Enquist, FAIA, Urban Design Partner at SOM Nominee’s Address: 224 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 1000 City/State/Zip: Chicago, IL 60604 Phone: 312-360-4151 Nominator: Cameron Barradale, ASLA, PLA, LEED AP “Nature is the best designer.” – Phil Enquist A generation of city designers has learned to see the natural and built worlds through Phil’s eyes: as a place for people that prioritizes, respects and enhances landscapes as the formative element of design. His is a world in which these systems are designed to seamlessly complement each other, creating the most sustainably efficient and healthful habitats for all the living things that do and will live there. This is the essence of his practice and his personal passion. He has done this for decades, and on five continents. A portfolio of his environmentally responsive design work and world-class open space projects would be as tall as he is. Here is but a sampling: At home in Chicago, he led the City of Chicago Central Area Plan that was the precursor to recent pilot projects to establish wetlands and break down the channelized edges of the North and South Branches of the Chicago River. His 2009 Chicago Riverwalk Framework Plan laid the foundation for the Sasaki Riverwalk project, establishing the now realized concept of the river rooms and Riverwalk retail that has transformed downtown Chicago. He was a visionary and lead planner for the Millennium Park Master Plan, which set the stage for Lurie Garden, Crown Fountain and the other iconic projects that make up the world-renowned city park.

  • River Cities: Historical and Contemporary 2015 Dumbarton Oaks Symposium in Garden and Landscape Studies May 8 – 9, 2015
River Cities: Historical and Contemporary 2015 Dumbarton Oaks Symposium in Garden and Landscape Studies May 8 – 9, 2015 Abstracts Anthony Acciavatti, Editor, Manifest: A Journal of American Architecture and Urbanism “Dynamic Agropolis: The Case of Allahabad, India” Allahabad merits scrutiny. Situated at the tip of the Ganga-Jamuna doab, where the colossal Ganges Canal system terminates and the Ganges and Jamuna rivers join forces at the Triveni Sangam, Allahabad is widely known as home to the Kumbh Mela. And while this sleepy university town is transformed into a media spectacle every twelve to thirteen years, the Triveni Sangam hosts an annual festival known as Magh Mela. Not unlike the Kumbh Mela, a city grid is tattooed into the banks and shoals of the Ganges River. Tents and temples pop-up. Bulbous pontoon bridges stretch from one bank of the river to the other. Media outlets erect outposts to film and report on the colorful scenes. But what is more spectacular than the reliable delivery of water and electricity and annual planning for millions of pilgrims—which are no doubt feats unto themselves— is the inherent temporal nature of the sacred confluence and its place in the larger urban ecology of the Ganges River Basin. After the tents and temples are dismantled and the cameras are gone, the gridded city remains etched into the banks of the river. Farmers use these residual lines left over from the sprawling metropolis to cultivate crops. Herds of cows and goats feed on grass while water buffalo plunge into the river. In other words, the temporary metropolis is transformed into an agropolis.
