PRESERVING LGBTQ HISTORY The chapters in this section provide a history of archival and architectural preservation of LGBTQ history in the United States. An archeological context for LGBTQ sites looks forward, providing a new avenue for preservation and interpretation. This LGBTQ history may remain hidden just under the ground surface, even when buildings and structures have been demolished. THE PRESERVATION05 OF LGBTQ HERITAGE Gail Dubrow Introduction The LGBTQ Theme Study released by the National Park Service in October 2016 is the fruit of three decades of effort by activists and their allies to make historic preservation a more equitable and inclusive sphere of activity. The LGBTQ movement for civil rights has given rise to related activity in the cultural sphere aimed at recovering the long history of same- sex relationships, understanding the social construction of gender and sexual norms, and documenting the rise of movements for LGBTQ rights in American history. -

Becoming the first U.S. state to provide direct funding and administrative support for work relief to its cities, counties and townships; with the creation of the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration in November of 1931, New York took its first steps in what would become a long tradition of work relief in the state. However, existing academic examinations of work relief in upstate New York in large part ignore activities in the state’s upstate region in favor of higher profile operations in New York City. -
Conservation, Gender, and the Tennessee Valley Authority During the New Deal
ABSTRACT BRADSHAW, LAURA HEPP. Naturalized Citizens: Conservation, Gender, and the Tennessee Valley Authority during the New Deal. (Under the direction of Katherine Mellen Charron and Matthew Morse Booker). Broadly, this thesis is an examination of the conservation movement and the Tennessee Valley Authority from the Progressive Era through the New Deal. The creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1933 had been premised upon earlier efforts to capture the river’s power and harness it to meet social needs. Harnessing hydroelectricity to remedy social and economic conditions in the South required both environmental engineering techniques and social engineering methods. By placing women at the center of the story, both in terms of their activism in bringing a conservation plan in the Tennessee River Valley into fruition, and in terms of the gendered implications of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s power policy, this thesis seeks to reexamine the invisible role that the construction of power politics had on the South, and the nation as a whole. Nichols Professor of Communications Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in Mass Communications *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ABSTRACT Contrary to the impression conveyed by many scholars and members of the popular press, women’s participation in the field of sports journalism is not a new or relatively recent phenomenon. Rather, the widespread emergence of female sports reporters can be traced to the 1920s, when gender-based notions about employment and physicality changed substantially. Those changes, together with a growing leisure class that demanded expanded newspaper coverage of athletic heroes, allowed as many as thirty-five female journalists to make inroads as sports reporters at major metropolitan newspapers during the 1920s. Among these reporters were the New York Herald Tribune’s Margaret Goss, one of several newspaperwomen whose writing focused on female athletes; the Minneapolis Tribune’s Lorena Hickok, whose coverage of a male sports team distinguished her from virtually all of her female sports writing peers; and the New York Telegram’s Jane Dixon, whose reports on boxing and other sports from a so-called “woman’s angle” were representative of the way most women cracked the male-dominated field of sports journalism. -

Serving beside him as First Lady was his fifth cousin and niece of former President Theodore Roosevelt, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt Roosevelt (Streitmatter xiii). As First Lady, Mrs. Roosevelt transformed the role that she occupied for an unprecedented twelve plus years. The aspect of her life that has received a great deal of attention in the past few decades is Mrs. Roosevelt’s relationship with Lorena Hickok. Hickok was an Associated Press reporter who covered Franklin D. Roosevelt as Governor and eventually was assigned to cover Eleanor during the presidential campaign of 1939 (5-7). The two women became close friends and would remain so for their entire lives. When the friends were not together, Eleanor and Lorena kept in touch through personal letters, phone calls and telegrams. Hickok collected the letters and donated them to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. Hickok’s will stipulated that the letters could not be opened until ten years after her death. In 1978, eighteen boxes of the friends’ correspondence were opened. Inside the cardboard boxes were 3,500 letters written by the two women to each other (xiv). -

Social Studies Research and Practice www.socstrp.org Trade Books’ Historical Representation of Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the World John H. Bickford III Taylor A. Badal Eastern Illinois University Contemporary education initiatives require English language arts educators spend half their time on non-fiction and history and social studies teachers to include diverse sources. Beginning in the early grades within the aforementioned curricula, students are to scrutinize multiple texts of the same historical event, era, or figure. Whereas trade books are a logical curricular resource for English language arts and history and social studies curricula, the education mandates do not provide suggestions. Research indicates trade books are rife with historical misrepresentations, yet few empirical studies have been completed so more research is needed. Our research examined the historical representation of Eleanor Roosevelt within trade books for early and middle-grades students. Identified historical misrepresentations included minimized or omitted accounts of the societal contexts and social relationships that shaped Mrs. Roosevelt’s social conscience and civic involvement. Effective content spiraling, in which complexity and nuance increase with grade level, between early and middle-grades trade books did not appear. Pedagogical suggestions included ways to position students to identify the varying degrees of historical representation within different trade books and integrate supplementary primary sources to balance the historical gaps. The Works Progress ^Administration in Pennsylvania, 1935 to 1940 HE STUDY of the Works Progress Administration in operation in Pennsylvania is a study in the workings of American Tfederalism. The responsibility to provide relief for citizens in economic distress is not clearly delegated to either the national or state governments in the Constitution. Congress' power to provide for the "general welfare of the people" may mean that the national government is responsible for relief, but traditionally Americans had followed the English pattern and viewed relief as the responsibility of local and state governments and private citizens. The Depression ended this tradition. During the Depression, the Works Progress Administration was created in 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt under the terms of the Emergency Relief Appropriations Act.1 Its purpose was to get able-bodied unemployed persons off the dole and back to work on government projects. The Civil Works Administration, which was a temporary program intended to help workers survive the winter of 1933-1934? was an earlier experiment in federal work relief. Before and during the time the CWA was in operation, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) provided matching Fed- eral Government funds to states for relief for all persons in need (this was usually, though not exclusively, direct relief or the dole). The FERA was administered by the states. The WPA was admin- istered by the Federal Government, and it provided work relief to individuals on relief who were employable (one per family). Once the WPA was in operation, the states provided direct relief (the dole) for unemployables. -

By holding the conferences, Mrs. Roosevelt attributed to women an important function in the political communication process, and at the same time helped to secure the stiktus and bolster the confidence of women repofters. The topics of the conferences were political issues related to women and, legislation, and social and personal life at the White House. She also used the conferences to defuse criticism leveled at herself and her family, including the President, and to clarify statements made by,him. At the time, male journalists felt that these conferences reduced the dignity of the First Lady, provided listtle legitimate news, and,compromised reportorial objectivity. Theltranscripts reveal that Mrs. Roosevelt maintained traditional propriety, though the conferences did become a bit chatty, and that repsrters occasionally would shield the First Lady.
