GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

Though never a commercial success, its rootsy, countrifying influence has been felt from the Eagles to Garth Brooks, Dwight Yoakam to Uncle Tupelo, Steve Earle to Whiskeytown. If there was something called garage country rock (Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman called it “cosmic American music”), The Flying Burrito Brothers would be its patron saint. The Best Of The Flying Burrito Brothers edition of 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection (A&M/UME), released June 19, 2001, brings together 12 of the legendary group’s most popular tracks from its all-too-brief glory days. With each selection digitally remastered from the original master tapes, The Best Of The Flying Burrito Brothers serves as a concise “greatest hits” collection for a band that never had a hit single, a gold album or a Grammy but nevertheless left an incredible indelible influence on music. By the time singer-songwriter-guitarists Parsons and Hillman met, the Byrds with Hillman had already carved a niche in the folk-rock scene. Though Parsons had few credits to his name, Byrds’ leader Roger McGuinn hired him in 1968. Parsons pushed the Byrds into a more country direction for Sweetheart Of The Rodeo then made plans for another band. When Hillman departed the Byrds, the two teamed with bassist Chris Ethridge and steel guitarist “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow, who turned that old-fashioned twang from early country records into something cool and hip.

STANISLAWSKI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Jeffrey Magee, Chair Associate Professor Gayle Sherwood Magee Associate Professor Gabriel Solis Associate Professor Jim Hansen ABSTRACT The country rock movement emerged in Southern California in the mid-1960s and was comprised of musicians who, through diverse musical practices and conceptual means, sought to fuse elements of country music with other popular genres. Developing amidst the social and political turmoil that defined the era, country rock provided a space for musicians and listeners to negotiate both musical and cultural boundaries. This dissertation provides a critical analysis of the life, legacy, and music of one of the movement’s central figures: Gram Parsons. Since his death in 1973 at the age of 26, interest in Parsons has steadily increased such that today he is hailed by many critics and fans as the “father of country rock” and the movement’s most influential artist. Much of this posthumous recognition is rooted in idealizations of Parsons’s Southernness, experiences of familial tragedy, fusions of country, rock, blues, and soul, or what he famously called, “cosmic American music,” and the bizarre details of his death. Intended to forge links between Parsons’s biography, music, and idiosyncratic personal style, these elements have been foregrounded by listeners in a way that has allowed Parsons to transcend the limited commercial success he received during his lifetime to attain a nearly mythical status.

GEORGE-ANNE Volume 59, No. 12 Statesboro, Georgia 30458 January 29, 1979 Degrees never approved by Board of Regents in music history, psychology By MARTHA BUCKNER Two degrees offered here for over four years have never been approved by the Board of Regents due to a misunderstanding about policy, according to Dr. Warren Jones, dean of arts and sciences. Auditors discovered the unapproved degrees, the B.S. in psychology and the B.A. in music history, in a periodic audit by the University System in mid-November, 1978. According to the policy of the Georgia University System, any new major program or degree program must be approved by the Board of Regents before being offered to students. At GSC, a major in psychology had already been approved along with a B.A. degree. "It was just assumed that a B.S. in psychology would automatically be ok," Jones said. Students who have already graduated with these degrees or who are presently studying in these major fields will suffer no ill-effects because of the misunderstanding, Jones said. All courses involved in these two degrees are also a part of an approved degree in the same field. Though his oft-stated desire was to introduce pure, unadulterated country to rock audiences, Parsons inadvertently helped bring California rock to mainstream country. Most likely, Parsons would have agreed with Elvis Costello’s assessment in the notes to a 1982 Parsons compilation: “In the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons helped create a Frankenstein’s Monster.” Costello is among a remarkable collection of artists who have contributed to Return Of The Grievous Angel: A Tribute To Gram Parsons, due out July 13 on Almo Sounds. (It’s the second Parsons tribute disc to be released this decade, following Rhino Records’ Conmemorativo project of 1993.) Overseen by Parsons’ greatest protégé and acolyte, Emmylou Harris, Return of the Grievous Angel features renditions of his songs by ’90s acts including Beck, Gillian Welch, Wilco and Whiskeytown, as well as artists from the generation right behind Parsons including Costello, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams — all of whom, like Parsons, have tenaciously followed their artistic muses, damn the commercial consequences. These are the people for whom Parsons’ message and music have been the most profound.
