We want to thank John Callarman Bytheway in Seattle. for his efforts in hosting the convention, in Here is part of a letter Bob wrote. I think spite of his wife’s illness and hospitalization we all can relate to this. Bob writes “First of during that period. In this regard, John went all, thanks a million for sending me a copy of way beyond the call. Thank you , John! the 2005 WTFDA TV Station Guide I ordered. I only wish I knew you folks existed before WTFDA FORUMS this” (and I also wish we knew you knew we knew we existed, I think). As long as we’re thanking members, a Bob also wanted some info on certain really big “thank-you” goes out to Chris UHF stations and that will take some research Cervantez for supplying the software, or at least a couple of hours at w9wi.com registering the domain name and hosting the looking up info. Another mixed bag this month. First we start with a part of the country we don’t often hear from, Arizona. Kevin Redding checks in from Mesa, AZ with some new DTV catches.

Equipment: VU190XR antenna, CM3032 amp, US Digital HD receiver into an analog 1994 Magnavox 13” color TV.

And we hear again from Old Cape Cod and Mr. Roy Barstow in Teaticket, MA:

WUND-DT-20 Columbia, NC W17CT Manteo, NC 495 mi Tr seen 4/10/05 477 mi Tr seen 4/10/05 @1400 ET @1300 ET

Roy’s comments:

“W17CT was in from tune in at 1300 to 1800 hrs. WUND-DT-20 was in around 2-3 hours, and was the only DTV seen down coast that afternoon. All DX going out or very weak by 5 pm, but W17CT still in for 1 hour later, and all alone! W51DF not seen, maybe less power.”

RCTV-3 Barquisimeto?, VEN 2165 mi 2Es seen 5/17/05 @1844 ET “9 o’clock” logo upper left

Per Roy, RCTV mentioned “Lara” in the ID. This is a state (estado) in Venezuela, and there are two stations on ch. 3 listed in this state on the TVRadioWorld website, one in Anzoategui (210 kW) and one in Barquisimeto (300 kW). I couldn’t find Anzoategui on a map as a city, but it’s a state further to the East, so maybe this is a misprint. Roy says RCTV was in and out for 2-1/2 hrs, even in color at times.

ARIZONA DXING

They say that necessity is the mother of invention. When you get backed into a corner, your mind switches gears and you improvise. This is what Kevin Redding did when he moved from Mesa, AZ to his new home in Gilbert. Kevin found that he couldn’t put an antenna on the roof of his new residence so he figured out a way to get it outside. Kevin has his antenna standing on a tripod. A rotor sits a foot or two above the top of the tripod and a long section of mast ends with the TV antenna on top. The best thing about this setup is that it really works.

6/18/2005 This report is for June, 2005. Tropo was steady for some of the month, but was not particularly good. I 1300 KOTA 3 SD 699 don’t know why, for sure, as conditions were quite 1310 KTVQ 2 MT 968 stable, which promotes coastal tropo ducting. It is 1330 KYUS 3 MT 853 possible that the inversion layer boundary was very 1650 WMAR 2 MD 677 high; too high for optimum at my low elevation. I 2125 CFSS 3 SK 800 Warmley haven’t done much driving in recent times to check that out for sure. Well, what can one say about the way the Season has been shaping up? May was great, and then, seemingly someone pulled the plug. It has been almost amusing watching those of us on the e-mail list getting excited about seeing or hearing Florida, Texas, and other VHF visitors that would bring about little more than a yawn in years gone by. As I write in mid-July, the Sun has been quite active. A series of M-class flares, and at least one X-class may shake things up a bit. But, the clock is clearly ticking down on the 2005 E-Season. For me, June brought few contacts that went beyond the routine. A few nice openings popped in from the West Coast via double-hop. Among the new grids worked was CN76, with my contact with W7IAN on the 16th. Signals were so strong that I worked him with just 4 watts. That same evening, Billy, WH6CYM/0 near Denver worked me using just 100 mw (1/10 of a watt). What was amazing about this contact is that Billy was a good, honest S9! The Caribbean made a few appearances. Like many others in the East and Midwest, I did manage to work St. Lucia, J68AS, on the 25th at 2325 UTC for a new country. The contact was made on battery power, as Field Day was on- going, and I worked from home on “emergency power.” Field Day was disappointing for most VHF operators. On Saturday evening, there were some signals from AZ, CO, CA and NM here, but little else. The W4EM group, with which I operated during the weekend at the WKNO TV/FM transmitter site, did even less on 6m. The band brought a virtual “goose egg for the gang there.

37 Here I am climbing the WKNO/FM tower to hang the 6 meter antenna for Field Day. I was an insanely hot day and a sweaty climb, which yielded nothing. Oh well… There is always next year. Fortunately, June hasn’t been a complete loss. You’ll see in the loggings below that Bill Smith in Massachusetts squeezed out a nice handful of new North American countries, but most all agree the ionosphere is much below expectations.

The ARRL Contest on 6/12 was a bust. Nothing heard at all until 2300z when I started to hear some good Aurora, but then the power went off here. [And isn’t that always the case? Just last night – June 19th – there was a very nice opening to the Caribbean here in Memphis, but once signals picked up, the lightening came with a vengeance. I had to shut down and wait. Dang. –Ed.]

Finally, another fun card from Jeff, K1MOD, in Illinois. This one comes from the Falkland Islands, a somewhat rare place to work, as it literally is home to more sheep than people!

44 ANTENNAS AND PREAMPS With Posts from the WTFDA List 7/12/05

Question: I've chosen the Channel Master 4228 8-bay UHF antenna for UHF and VHF-high (it apparently has good performance there too). I'll probably first mount this on my roof and then on my tower. Does anybody have experience with this type of antenna? I know they are quite heavy, but how would they compare with,say, a full-size VHF/UHF TV yagi?

I'm considering adding a pre-amp too, the Channel Master 7777 looking good. Should I do this, considering that I have one full-power analog and four powerful DTV locals on UHF about 10 miles away? Jacob Norlund, MN

The 4228 is a great antenna for uhf. Its vhf performance is not good at all and performance wise an all channel yagi would work better on all bands. If your main concern is uhf then it’s a great antenna. I have found that Winegard yagi antennas do produce more forward gain and directivity thou. The wind load is fairly light on these. In regards to a preamp! Considering you’re as close to locals as you are I recommend a Winegard AP-4700 over the channel master. First channel master never made a good UHF amp in my mind…too noisy. Second, the amps overload too easy. The Winegard AP-4700 is perfect. Just under 20 db gain and high input before overloading. Also very low noise levels. I have a ton of the 4700's for sale cheap if you need one. Rich Wertman NY

Replaced my Radio Shack 15-2160 (aka U-75R) with the 4228 Channel Master. While heaver than most UHF antennas, it wasn't the monster I though it would be. If your main interest is UHF/high VHF then you've found the right antenna. Currently using the CM Spartan 3 (3041) preamp, so I have no personal experience with the CM7777 preamp, but have heard good reviews. Fritze, KC5KBV AR

I run the CM 4228 8-bay and 7777 preamp for UHF here. (I use a VIP307SR on VHF.) I've been very pleased with the 4228's performance. I've tried a few others, but the 4228 has been the best so far. I know there are better antennas, but for a relatively small and inexpensive one, the 4228 works very nicely. Girard Westerberg, KY

I have used the 4228 CM UHF antenna in two locations, one metropolitan (Columbus, OH) but receiving stations from out of town, and one fringe (Indian Lake, OH). It is a dependable, well-made antenna with very good gain and F/B ratios. Be careful with preamps. While I use the CM DSB series at both locations (0071 Columbus, 0264 at Figure 1 CM 4228 Indian Lake), overload is a problem in Columbus with the nearby digital channels causing "snow" on other channels. Traps can help. I have spoken with the CM people in the past. They indicated that the Spartan 3 preamps had better overload characteristics than the 7777. Someone's advice to try it without a preamp is good for a local environment. Bill Mitchell, OH

45 NAB Blasts EchoStar Comments in SHVERA Proceeding

The NAB argued against comments that EchoStar filed proposing a much higher standard for reception of local DTV stations under the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act (SHVERA) than is currently used by the FCC for determining DTV coverage. NAB also criticized EchoStar's motives for the much stricter coverage criteria for local DTV broadcasters.

In its reply comments, the NAB noted that while DirecTV plans to deliver as many as 1,500 local digital signals by satellite, "EchoStar, by contrast, has to date announced few plans for offering digital local-to-local service." NAB continues, "Rather, EchoStar appears to be intent on, wherever possible, using national digital feeds (from New York and Los Angeles) as a low-cost substitute for local-to-local service." NAB argued, "EchoStar's technical arguments are self-serving--and wrong."

NAB listed three examples how EchoStar proposed a double standard for satellite reception and local DTV reception:

1. "EchoStar proposes to treat households as 'unserved' over the air unless they can receive local TV stations with an indoor antenna--even though DBS would be doomed if it were forced to rely on indoor antennas;

2. "EchoStar insists that if outdoor antennas are used to test over-the-air signals, they will be pointed in the wrong direction--even though mis-pointing would likewise be fatal for DBS;

3. "EchoStar asks the Commission to impose extraordinarily high performance standards on broadcasters--even though DBS service is subject to 'rain fade' and is unavailable if anything at all (whether a house or a tree branch) blocks a satellite dish's direct line of sight to the satellite."

EchoStar reports--according to NAB--that DTV broadcasters should be subject to a 99 percent time variability (F 50, 99) rather than the 90 percent (F 50, 90) specified in FCC rules for DTV coverage or the FCC should "vastly increase the minimum field strengths required for a location to be 'served.' Such a requirement, NAB asserts, would require broadcasters "commit gross violations of the Commission's limits on for digital signals."

Many of the NAB reply arguments refute engineering supplied by Hammett and Edison (H&E) to support EchoStar's assertions. In its Reply Engineering Statement Concerning Measurement and Prediction of Digital Television Reception, Meintel, Sgrignoli and Wallace (MSW) address H&E's comments. The Reply Engineering Statement offers a wealth of information about the current state of DTV receiver performance, DTV propagation and reception that is difficult to summarize in a few words. MSW agreed with H&E on the problems with indoor reception, but note that this is consistent with the FCC's statement that households are expected to make the same effort to receive DTV broadcast stations as was needed for NTSC analog TV--which would include the use of outdoor antennas.

In their arguments, EchoStar and H&E point to the inadequacy of the current FCC DTV service criteria to determine real-world coverage and tend look at a worst-case scenario. NAB and MSW rely on their experience with DTV receiver and field testing to show that, with a few exceptions real-world reception isn't that difficult. NAB and MSW note that use of a mast-mounted low-noise amplifier, a more directional outdoor antenna that is readily available and a fifth generation DTV receiver can provide reception in situations where the FCC/ATSC planning factors would predict no reception. They reiterate that the FCC should require viewers to exert the same effort to receive a DTV signal under SHVERA "as they have done in the past with analog TV (including use of a rotor, when needed)."
