BRAD SILVER
Brad Silver is a Bronx native through and through. He was born, raised, and currently lives in the Amalgamated Housing complex.
His father, Louis Silver, also a native Bronxite, was the son of David and Lena Silver. In 1929, when Louis was eight years old, his parents moved the family, including Louis and his older sister Rose, from Washington Avenue in the Bronx, into the just completed building at 80 Van Cortlandt Park South. Louis worked in the garment trade, first as a presser and later as a foreman for the pressers.
Brad’s mother, Clara Schneider, was raised in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn. When she was admitted to Hunter College (now Lehman College), the family, Morris and Rose, Clara and her sister Martha, moved from Brooklyn to 80 Van Cortlandt Park South to reduce Clara’s travel to school. Clara worked for many years in the administrative office of the Chemistry Department at City College.
Brad had a younger sister, Ronnie, who is deceased. Ronnie was a highly regarded Bronx educator, teaching kindergarten at the Bronx New School. Her husband, John Ranere, continues to live in the Amalgamated Houses. They have two sons, Nicholas, and Michael who is married to Stacey. Michael and Stacey have a daughter, Remy, making Brad a very proud “Great Uncle”.
Both the Silvers and Schneiders had large extended families, many of whom resided in the Amalgamated. At one point, with several generations on both sides of the family, about 14 apartments were occupied by family members. As a result, Brad had the positive experience of growing up very close to several cousins.
Brad attended the Amalgamated Nursery School, PS 95, JHS 143, and the Bronx High School of Science, from which he graduated in 1966. He continued on to City College of New York, where he earned a BA degree in Architecture. Unfortunately, when he graduated from CCNY, there was a slump in building and construction and Brad was unable to find employment in his field. However, while in college, Brad was very active in the House Plan Association, a more democratic alternative to fraternities, where he got valuable experience in leadership and group work activities.
This experience led to his obtaining his first job as an Outreach Worker for Teens at Bronx House, the Jewish community center located on Pelham Parkway. He then served as the Teen Program Director and finally as the Co-op City Program Director. From 1974 to 1976, he interrupted his time there to attend the Wurzweiler School of Yeshiva University, where he earned a Master of Social Work degree. From 1978 to 1984, he worked at Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School, a residential treatment center for adolescents of the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services. While at Hawthorne Cedar Knolls, Brad met Lynn Catterson, who was also working there. They were married in 1980. Lynn served as the Assistant to Judah Goldstein, the Director of Education at Amalgamated Housing. When he retired, she succeeded him as Director of Education. Under his tutelage and encouragement, Lynn became interested in the field of Art and returned to college to earn Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Art History from Columbia University. Following a full-time teaching position, Lynn currently holds a part-time teaching position at Columbia, but spends most of her time in research and writing, specializing in the areas of the Renaissance Sculpture and more recently in the Art Market of the Nineteenth Century.
Brad and Lynn have two children, Gavin and Lauren. Gavin is married to Colleen and they live on the Upper East Side. Gavin currently works for an internet commerce company as the Director of Technology & Operations. Colleen is a Vice President at Franklin Templeton Investments.
Lauren, who lives in Brooklyn, is an Assistant District Attorney in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, currently assigned to the Special Victims Unit (SVU), working on sex crimes and crimes against children.
In 1984, Brad left JBFCS and became the Director of Social Services at Bronx Jewish Community Council. Over the following years Brad held a series of increasingly responsible positions at BJCC culminating in his elevation to Executive Vice President in 1999, the position he currently holds.
During his tenure, Brad has always had a special concern for his home neighborhood, Van Cortlandt Village. He opened a branch office of BJCC, named AmPark, in the middle of the area to give easier access to local residents to their services. A new NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) was established in the Amalgamated. One of the distribution centers for Project Hope, a joint project with B’nai Brith for the distribution of food packages to the elderly and needy at Passover and Chanukah, was set up at the Amalgamated. The very successful BJCC Home Attendant program, serves dozens of clients in Van Cortlandt. Brad is also working with our Committee on the Future of VCJC, developing plans to attract new Jewish families to Van Cortlandt Village. In his “spare time”, he also serves on the Boards of the Neighborhood Initiatives Development Corporation and of the Herman Liebman Memorial Fund.
For his exemplary work for the Jewish community over the years, Brad has been previously honored by the Metropolitan New York Coordination Council on Jewish Poverty (Met Council), and by the Pelham Parkway Jewish Community Council. We are proud to add the name of Van Cortlandt Jewish Center to this list.
ABOUT US…
Last year, BJCC : Assisted 12,000 food packages through our Food Pantry Delivered 1,600 holiday food packages to home-bound seniors Distributed 470 food vouchers Provided 3,500 transportation trips for seniors Involved 2,900 caring volunteers Helped 800 individuals enroll in food stamps Helped 160 individuals with legal counseling Provided over $55,000 in emergency cash relief
OUR MISSION The mission of Bronx Jewish Community Council is to provide enhanced quality of life to the residents of the Bronx, particularly older adults. This is accomplished by offering programs which encompass services, support and coordination of community resources. Our goal is to make certain that seniors can age safely at home in the least restrictive environments.
OUR HISTORY The Bronx Jewish Community Council (BJCC) was founded in 1972 as an outgrowth of the anti-poverty movement. The agency was developed to assist an underserved population, a group composed largely of isolated Jewish holder adults. As a result, BJCC developed great expertise in addressing the needs of the older adults through providing concrete social services that help individuals and the community obtain and retain the resources they need to live happier, healthier lives. Today, BJCC annually serves thousands of low-income Bronx residents of every creed, race, and religion. Services range from case management, crisis intervention, anti-eviction services, benefits and entitlements counseling, and emergency food assistance, to referrals, advocacy, health promotion, outreach and community cultural events. BJCC is known for our leadership in assessing and responding to clients’ emergency needs and emerging trends in the community. We adapt programs accordingly and target resources where they are needed and develop creative strategies to fill service gaps. With offices throughout the Borough, our availability to serve is far-reaching. We are where people need us to be.
RABBI’S MESSAGE
It is my distinct honor and privilege as Rabbi of the Van Cortlandt Jewish Center to pay tribute to a veritable pillar of our borough, The Bronx Jewish Community Council , and to Brad Silver , its Executive Vice President, this year’s Journal Gala honorees.
Many of you attend our beautiful community Passover Seders year after year. This special celebration and the feeling of connection gained through this event might not be possible without the assistance in form of subsidies we received in recent years through BJCC. Whenever I call upon Brad, he is always cordial, receptive, and extremely helpful in addressing our needs and varied requests.
Recently Brad spent close to two hours with members of our Board’s Committee on the Future of VCJC, discussing a whole host of subjects directly impacting our Synagogue. I found the breadth and depth of knowledge he displayed on a vast array of subjects absolutely astounding - all of this without any notes, evidently based on Brad’s thorough understanding of critical variables from the experience he has culled over decades of tireless service to our Bronx community.
I have personally been well acquainted with the wonderful work of The Bronx Jewish Community Council for quite some time. From 1992 - 2010, I wore a different hat as Certified Social Worker for Graenum Berger Bronx Federation Service Center under the leadership of its director, Mr. Asher Moskowitz. As a community social worker, hardly a day would pass without my director or me working together with the BJCC staff, who were continually extending a helping hand in administering life sustaining programs. We had a joint Bronx Holocaust Survivors Program. Among others, BJCC Social Work Director Judy Uman, who served on our Board of Directors, was always available to offer assistance, especially in crisis situations. David Edelstein, Director of The Jewish Community Council of Pelham Parkway branch of BJCC, was an ongoing resource to whom we would regularly make community referrals, for services such as client advocacy, stipends and their food pantry. Brad himself has been an invaluable resource in ways far too numerous to enumerate.
The many programs and services provided by the BJCC staff under Brad’s dedicated leadership have served, and continues to serve, not only the congregants of our Synagogue and other Bronx institutions, but many tens of thousands of Jewish and non-Jewish Bronx residents over the decades. In Judaism there is a famous credo: “Whoever saves a life is considered as if he saved an entire world.” How many countless worlds has The Bronx Jewish Community Council saved over the years? Their service is unquestionably a “Kiddush Hashem” Public Sanctification of G-d’s Name of the highest order.
To Brad and to all of his Bronx Jewish Community Council associates I wish the Almighty’s continued blessings of good health, energy, prosperity, success, and perhaps most importantly, the deep personal satisfaction that comes from doing His holy work. May you always grow in continually meeting your agency’s mission of providing enhanced quality of life to the Bronx population for many glorious years to come, and may we continually strive to emulate your worthy examples in our day to day life. Mazel Tov & Congratulations!
Rabbi David Borenstein
]] PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
This year’s honoree is a little different for the Van Cortlandt Jewish Center. He is not an official member of VCJC. What makes him worthy is all that he has done for us and the neighborhood we serve.
Executive Vice President of the Bronx Jewish Community Council, Brad Silver , works in all of the communities of the Bronx to help preserve synagogues and Jewish neighborhoods. In all of his endeavors he goes above and beyond his job description, and is more than worthy of this honor.
Today, for the first time, we are also honoring an organization, the Bronx Jewish Community Council . They have sponsored the VCJC Community Passover Seder meals. Their Project Hope delivers food packages to Jews in our community who are in need on Passover and Chanukah. They also sponsor the NORC program to aid seniors find the services they require. In addition, they operate the AmPark office, providing counseling and social services.
Brad and BJCC, thanks for all that you do!
Robert Gillman, President
JOURNAL/GALA CHAIR’S MESSAGE
They say “change is good”. I hope so, because this year’s event is seeing many changes. The Chair has changed, with Phil Friedman handing the title back to me after a break of several years. Phil has done an exemplary job as the Chair of this event, and continues to support me in so many ways it feels like we are Co-Chairs. Thank you, Phil – you are invaluable!
Another change is the name of the event. People always asked why call it a dinner when it starts at noon? Yet calling it a lunch didn’t seem to do justice to the array of food served. So this year we are calling it our Annual Journal Gala. We’ll have to see if this sticks.
Yet another change – both our caterer and our venue. As you are reading this I am hoping that you are thinking we made a great decision with our choice of caterer, the Riverdale K Grill House. We also decided to hold the event at the restaurant instead of in the Van Cortlandt Jewish Center ballroom, providing a more elegant setting and making it easier for the caterer to set up, serve and clean up. Many thanks to Ceil Hartstein for helping me work with the caterer to ensure a great menu and afternoon. Thanks as well to Neil Harrison, the manager of the Riverdale K Grill House, also a long-time community resident and friend, who has gone above and beyond to ensure a fantastic event.
More changes: Our honoree, Brad Silver, is not a Board member, Officer or volunteer congregant of the VCJC. He is, however, one of our own in that he has lived in our community for all of his life, and as Executive Vice President of our other honoree, the Bronx Jewish Community Council, has shown his support for our synagogue and our community to no end. Read about it throughout this journal and you’ll agree.
You want more change, you say? Okay, this year we printed both the gala invitations and the journal in our office. We offered color ads. We opted for an elegant gold border instead of gold foil pages, so people opting for pictures or photos with their ads could clearly see them.
One thing that has not changed is the hard work and dedication of the Journal Gala Committee. I would like to thank Marc Friedman, Phil Friedman, Bob Gillman, Stu Harris, Ceil Hartstein, Jack Kleinfeld, and Jack Spiegel for making my job easier and this event successful. Thanks also to Roberta Seidner and Claire Haime, our office staff, and to our spiritual leader Rabbi David Borenstein.
Thank you to all of our supporters who took journal ads, attended the event, or both. And last but certainly not least, thanks to Brad Silver and the Bronx Jewish Community Center for giving us honorees worthy of the title.
