Fluorescence Characterisation and Visual Ecology of Pseudocheilinid Wrasses Tobias Gerlach1*, Jennifer Theobald1, Nathan S
Gerlach et al. Frontiers in Zoology (2016) 13:13 DOI 10.1186/s12983-016-0145-1 RESEARCH Open Access Fluorescence characterisation and visual ecology of pseudocheilinid wrasses Tobias Gerlach1*, Jennifer Theobald1, Nathan S. Hart2, Shaun P. Collin2 and Nico K. Michiels1 Abstract Background: Wrasses represent the second largest family of marine fishes and display a high diversity of complex colours linked to ecological functions. Recently, red autofluorescent body colouration has been reported in some of these fishes. However, little is known about the distribution of such fluorescent body patterns in wrasses or the animals’ ability to perceive such colours. Results: Against this background, we (1) investigated long-wavelength emission autofluorescence in thirteen species of pseudocheilinid wrasses and (2) characterised the spectral absorbance of visual pigments in one of the examined species, the fairy wrasse Cirrhilabrus solorensis. Spectrophotometric analysis revealed that fluorescent body colouration is widespread and diverse within this clade, with considerable variation in both fluorescent pattern and maximum emission wavelength between species. Characterisation of visual pigments in retinal photoreceptors showed a single class of rod and three spectrally distinct cone photoreceptors, suggesting possible trichromacy. Conclusion: Combining the emission characteristics of fluorescence body colouration and the spectral sensitivity data of retinal cells suggests that the visual system of C. solorensis is sensitive to pseudocheilinid fluorescence. Keywords: Red fluorescence, Photoluminescence, Microspectrophotometry, Colour vision, Labridae Background wavelength (>600 nm) part of downwelling sunlight is Wrasses (Labridae) represent the second largest marine quickly absorbed by sea water, which is most transparent fish family, containing more than 600 species within 82 to blue light of wavelengths at around 480 nm [15–17]. -

The Spirit of the Living Creatures Was in the Wheels -- Ezekiel 1:21
The spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels -- Ezekiel 1:21 "Wheels Within Wheels deepens the musical experience created at Congregation Bet Haverim by lifting the veil between the ordinary and the sacred, so that our earthy expression of musical holiness connects with the celestial resonance of the universal. Like Ezekiel’s mystical vision, the spirals of harmonies, voices and instruments evoke contemplation, awe and celebration. At times Wheels Within Wheels will transport you to an intimate experience with your innermost self, and at other times it will convey a profound connection with the world around you." -- Rabbi Joshua Lesser THE MUSICIANS OF CONGREGATION BET HAVERIM Chorus Soprano: Nefesh Chaya, Sara Dardik, Julie Fishman, Nancy Gerber, Joy Goodman, Ellie McGraw, Theresa Prestwood, Rina Rosenberg, Faith Russler, Sandi Schein Alto: Jesse Harris Bathrick, Elke Davidson, Gayanne Geurin, Kim Goldsmith, Rebecca Green, Carrie Hausman, Alix Laing, Rebecca Leary Safon, AnnaLaura Scheer, Valerie Singer, Linda Weiskoff, Valerie Wolpe, McKenzie Wren Tenor: Ned Bridges, Brad Davidorf, Faye Dresner, Henry Farber, Alan Hymowitz, Lynne Norton Bass: Dan Arnold, Gregg Bedol, David Borthwick, Gary Falcon, Bill Laing, Bill Witherspoon, Howard Winer Band Will Robertson, guitar, keyboards; Natalie Stahl, clarinet, saxophone; Sarah Zaslaw, violin, viola; Reuben Haller, mandolin; Jordan Dayan, bass, electric bass; Mike Zimmerman, drum kit, percussion; Henry Farber and Gayanne Geurin, percussion; with Matthew Kaminski, accordion Strings Sarah Zaslaw and Benjamin Reiss, violin; David Borthwick, viola; Ruth Einstein, cello; Will Robertson, double bass Children’s Choir and CBH Community School Chorus director: Will Robertson Music director: Gayanne Geurin Thank You It takes a shul to raise a recording. -

Rca Records to Release American Idol: Greatest Moments on October 1
THE RCA RECORDS LABEL ___________________________________________ RCA RECORDS TO RELEASE AMERICAN IDOL: GREATEST MOMENTS ON OCTOBER 1 On the heels of crowning Kelly Clarkson as America's newest pop superstar, RCA Records is proud to announce the release of American Idol: Greatest Moments on Oct. 1. The first full-length album of material from Fox's smash summer television hit, "American Idol," will include four songs by Clarkson, two by runner-up Justin Guarini, a song each by the remaining eight finalists, and “California Dreamin’” performed by all ten. All 14 tracks on American Idol: Greatest Moments, produced by Steve Lipson (Backstreet Boys, Annie Lennox), were performed on "American Idol" during the final weeks of the reality-based television barnburner. In addition to Kelly and Justin, the show's remaining eight finalists featured on the album include Nikki McKibbon, Tamyra Gray, EJay Day, RJ Helton, AJ Gil, Ryan Starr, Christina Christian, and Jim Verraros. Producer Steve Lipson, who put the compilation together in an unprecedented two-weeks time, finds a range of pop gems on the album. "I think Kelly's version of ‘Natural Woman' is really strong. Her vocals are brilliant. She sold me on the song completely. I like Christina's 'Ain't No Sunshine.' I think she got the emotion of it across well. Nikki is very good as well -- very underestimated. And Tamyra is brilliant too so there's not much more to say about her." RCA Records will follow American Idol: Greatest Moments with the debut album from “American Idol” champion Kelly Clarkson in the first quarter of 2003. -
Reef Fishes of the Bird's Head Peninsula, West

E-mail: [email protected] 2 Conservation International Indonesia Marine Program. Jl. Dr. Muwardi No. 17, Renon, Denpasar 80235 Indonesia. Abstract A checklist of shallow (to 60 m depth) reef fishes is provided for the Bird’s Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia. The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. Introduction and finally a complex geologic past highlighted The region consisting of eastern Indonesia, East by shifting island arcs, oceanic plate collisions, Timor, Sabah, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and widely fluctuating sea levels (Polhemus and the Solomon Islands is the global centre of 2007). reef fish diversity (Allen 2008). Approximately 2,460 species or 60 percent of the entire reef fish The Bird’s Head Peninsula and surrounding fauna of the Indo-West Pacific inhabits this waters has attracted the attention of naturalists and region, which is commonly referred to as the scientists ever since it was first visited by Coral Triangle (CT). -
A Multifunction Trade-Off Has Contrasting Effects on the Evolution of Form and Function ∗ KATHERINE A

CORN ,CHRISTOPHER M. MARTINEZ,EDWARD D. BURRESS, AND PETER C. WAINWRIGHT Department of Evolution & Ecology, University of California, Davis, 2320 Storer Hall, 1 Shields Ave, Davis, CA, 95616 USA ∗ Correspondence to be sent to: University of California, Davis, 2320 Storer Hall, 1 Shields Ave, Davis, CA 95618, USA; E-mail: [email protected] Received 27 August 2020; reviews returned 14 November 2020; accepted 19 November 2020 Associate Editor: Benoit Dayrat Abstract.—Trade-offs caused by the use of an anatomical apparatus for more than one function are thought to be an important constraint on evolution. However, whether multifunctionality suppresses diversification of biomechanical systems is challenged by recent literature showing that traits more closely tied to trade-offs evolve more rapidly. We contrast the evolutionary dynamics of feeding mechanics and morphology between fishes that exclusively capture prey with suction and multifunctional species that augment this mechanism with biting behaviors to remove attached benthic prey. Diversification of feeding kinematic traits was, on average, over 13.5 times faster in suction feeders, consistent with constraint on biters due to mechanical trade-offs between biting and suction performance.
