CILIP is delighted to announce that Cyber Defence & Information Assurance Masters and Postgraduate Diploma courses at Cranfield University have become the first of their kind to receive CILIP accreditation, recognising their solid preparation for professional practice and a suitable base for anybody entering the information sector. At the institution’s assessment visit on 4th December 2019, the programmes were added to the current offer of the Information Capability Management Masters by the Department.

CILIP is delighted to announce that two courses at Chulalongkorn University have been awarded CILIP accreditation, recognising that they provide solid preparation for professional practice and a suitable base for anybody entering the library, information and knowledge management professions. The Master of Arts in Information Studies (in English) and the Bachelor of Arts in Information Studies (in Thai) have gained formal CILIP accreditation following the institution’s assessment visit on 17th October. Our first accredited provider in the ASEAN region, Chulalongkorn University is an important addition to a growing global network of renowned learning providers that offer quality assurance for learners pursuing a career in the library, information and knowledge professions.” Chulalongkorn University (CU) is a public and autonomous university originally founded in 1899 and established as a national university in 1917. It is the oldest institute of higher education in Thailand and has been ranked number 1 for the last seven years.

In 1955, the Division of Library Science was established in the Faculty of Arts and its first course that was established in that year was the Diploma in Library Studies. In 1979, the Division of Library Science was renamed Department of Library Science. The Department of Library Science offers three degrees all in the field of Information Studies -- Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy.

VISTORS TO CLASS OF 64 LIBRARY

On 9 January 2002, Class of 64 Library welcomed a visit from seven Officers of the Information Department led by Aw. Mohammad Hisyam bin Idris.

Pn Hjh Nellie, a Class of 64 Alumni member was on hand to brief the visitors on the set up of the library, the collection, and the mini gallery.

IFLA has approved the formation of a Malay Speaking Caucus and has invited Librarians to the launch at IFLA Dublin in August.

30th SEA GAMES 2019

Brunei Darussalam sent 87 athletes to compete in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Manila and were accompanied by 45 coaches and technical officers, eight managers and 20 secretariat officers

The 30th SEA Games in the Philippines staged 56 sports, the highest number in SEA Games history. Some 9,840 athletes from 11 countries participated in the biennial sports event.

Brunei participated in aquatics, athletics, billiards, golf, fencing, football, karate, lawn bowls, netball, pencak silat, polo, taekwondo, tenpin bowling and wushu.

BRUNEI LNG 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Brunei LNG’s 50th Anniversary logo encapsulates its golden jubilee celebrations, with each element of the logo representing a specific story of what Brunei LNG embodies.

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office in a sabda said that the Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad, BLNG has been instrumental in supporting a variety of current and future initiatives on developing Bruneians by supporting the investment in people development and ensuring a sustainable transfer of skills and knowledge for the locals.

In the sabda, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince as Chairman of Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad said he has been informed on the encouraging development as 93 per cent of the current total workforce comprise of local talent, which is highly significant to the aspiration of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in developing local tealnets in the oil and gas industry through the 'Bruneianisation Programme'. His Royal Highness made the sabda at BLNG's 50th anniversary celebration yesterday afternoon. The function took place at Indera Kayangan Ballroom, The Empire Brunei.

Upon arrival, His Royal Highness was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md Hussien, Minister of Energy and Mr. Patrice Girard, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Brunei LNG. Also present were Cabinet Ministers.

The ceremony commenced with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Salleh, Head of the Muslim Employees Body of BLNG.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Patrice Girard attributed BLNG's longevity due to the conjunction of multiple success conditions, namely the strong relationship built over the years with BLNG's three Japanese foundation buyers namely JERA; Tokyo Gas and Osaka Gas, as well as more recent relationship with other buyers such as SLMT, PLL and KOCH.

In the sabda, His Royal Highness emphasised the importance of BLNG's contribution and its important role in the economic development of Brunei Darussalam throughout the 50 years.

His Royal Highness then received Pasambah in the form of BLNG's 50th Anniversary Coffee Table Book and BLNG's liquefaction train model.

BLNG celebrated its Golden Jubilee this year, and will continue to support and realise the aspiration of His Majesty to increase job opportunities for locals through government initiatives.

The celebration was enlivened with silat and ethnic dance performances from Belait and Iban ethnics.

BLNG mission is to be a recognised leader in safety, business integrity, production and commercial excellence to bring value for the country.

3RD CULTURAL FESTIVAL ON MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS OF SEVEN ETHNIC GROUPS IN BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

YB Major General (rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang HJ Aminuddin Ihsan, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports spoke at the launch of the Festival that ”ethnic music should be viewed as cultural treasures, and tevhmology advancement can be used to preserve and promote it for the future generation.emphasised the importance of the preservation efforts for ethnic music among the community, adding that the element of originality must be preserved and perpetuated. Musical instruments are also of great importance as a tangible expression of aesthetic and symbolic culture as well as the intangible aspects of the song and hereditary music.

Music and musical instruments play an important role in preserving the nation’s identity. It also promotes social fabric to ensure the well-being of the community as a whole. The preservation of ethnic music as an aesthetic and symbolic expression must be balanced by the variety of cultural elements which plays a role in shaping the image and identity of the nation.

All these elements reflect the harmony and unity of the nation in addition to prioritising the teachings of Islam as the official religion and Malay as the official language of the country.”

The festival coincides with one of the resolutions reached at the previous Cultural Festival – to organise ethnic cultural heritage programmes regularly.

It was also an effort to identify more resources to the list of Infinite Cultural Heritage inventories that need to be preserved and documented in the current global development and progress. Organising the Cultural Festival is a major initiative of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports as the ‘Custodian of Culture’, an agency that is committed to preserving and expanding the country’s cultural heritage.

The festival brings together seven ethnic Malay groups to share their culture through talk sessions, demonstrations of musical, cultural performances, exhibitions and sales of products.

It is also an opportunity to promote cultural differences among the younger generation. It is hoped the festival will raise awareness and understanding on cultural heritage, the importance of preserving heritage and the culture of Malay ethnic groups and at the same time strengthen networking and cooperation among the seven Malay ethic groups in the country with government agencies. LAUNCH OF TEBUANMAN

Brunei’s first superhero comic book, Tebuanman, was launched on 14 Dec 2019 at The Coffee Bean Brunei, OneCity Shopping Centre. The comic book character is inspired by the Tebuan (hornet), an icon in Brunei culture and especially known as the name of the Bruneian football team that won the Malaysian Premier League in 1999. The launch and publishing of Tebuanman is supported by Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd .

The comic book is a brainchild of writers Adi Farhan and Khai Anwar and is meant to be Brunei’s first superhero comic book. Tebuanman, is a series of leisure sketch by Adi Farhan . He decided to collaborate with writer Khai Anwar to flesh out the character into a comic book.
