It is often measured as a combination of education, income and occupation. Adapted from APA’s Socioeconomic Status Office publications Operational Definition Wealth Index • The wealth index is a composite measure of a household's cumulative living standard. The wealth index is calculated by principal component analysis using data on household’s ownership of selected assets, materials used for housing construction and types of water access and sanitation facilities. Wealth Index • The wealth index categorizes the households into 5 wealth quintiles, allowing us to assess how the common health and nutrition indicators differ between the poor and non-poor households. • For the provincial and HUCs estimates, wealth status is classified as poor for the bottom 30% of the income group and the non-poor for the upper 30%. Operational Definition Highest Educational Attainment* • refers to the highest grade/year of formal schooling completed by each member of the household and not the total years attended • Regrouped into: a) none - no grade completed b) elementary level - the stage of formal education concerned with providing the first six years of basic education. c) secondary level - the stage of formal education following the elementary level concerned primarily with continuing basic education and expanding it to include the learning of employable gainful skills, usually corresponding to four years of high school d) college level - the stage of formal education following the secondary education, covering the programs on all courses of study leading to a bachelor degree. e) others - Alternative Learning System, SPED , Arabic Schooling * Phil. Standard Classification of Education (PSCEd) Operational Definition Occupation • The occupation of each individual members of the household, 10 years old and above in the past 6 months • 2012 Philippine Standard Occupational Codes (PSOC) is a statistical classification of the different occupational groups of the working population, including the military work force in the country Sociodemographic Profile • Describes the population groups by: a) age - refers to the exact age of each household member as of his/her last birthday b) sex – categorized the household members of the households as males and females c) civil status – or marital status d) type of residence - urban-rural classification of PSA Operational Definitions Civil status - status of an individual in relation to marriage and classified as: a) single - a person who has never been married b) married - a person who has been united in matrimony with another person of opposite sex through a religious or civil rites. To be considered married, the couple should still be living together, or if living apart from each other, the separation must only be temporary (e.g. working elsewhere, attending seminars, etc) c) separated - a person whose partner has left permanently, with or without legal sanctions. d) widowed - a person who has been married before, whether formally or consensually but his/her partner has died and has not remarried at the time of visit. e) common law/live-in – those who live together consensually with another as husband or wife Operational Definitions Household • an aggregate of persons, generally but not necessarily bound by ties of kinship, who sleep in the same housing unit and have a common arrangement for the preparation and consumption of food. METRO CEBU PERSPECTIVES General Information The island Province of Cebu is located in Central Philippines, about 600 km south of Manila, the country’s capital. Metropolitan Cebu, where economic activity is concentrated, is a coastal urban sprawl comprising four (4) cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-lapu and Talisay; and six (6) municipalities of Compostela, Lilo-an, Consolacion, Cordova, Minglanilla and Naga. It has an approximate total land area of 74,209 hectares (Metro Cebu Ecological Profile, Filteknik Inc.). Metro Cebu’s population was estimated at 1.3 million in 1990 and projected to reach 2.3 million by year 2010 (PCEEM Project Report, June 1998). It hosts at least 70% of the approximately 1000 industries in Region 7. Records from the Land Transportation Office-Region 7 showed that in 1994 there was a total of 124,561 registered motor vehicles. During the 5-year period from 1990-1994, an average annual increase of 11.5 % was also noted. Motor vehicles have been identified as a major source of air pollution in the country. As of 1998 Metro Cebu’s water demand is estimated at 234,000 cum. per day, rapidly increasing to 375,000 cum. per day by year 2010. Main source of water supply for domestic and industrial use is groundwater, deriving mainly from the coastal limestone aquifer and alluvial water-bearing formation in the river deltas of five rivers, namely: Kotkot River, Cansaga River, Butuanon River, Mananga River and Pangdan River.

It is composed of four (4) provinces, namely: Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor. Strategically scattered over these provinces are the cities of Cebu, Danao, Lapu-lapu, Mandaue, Talisay and Toledo in Cebu Province; Bais, Bayawan, Canlaon, Tanjay and Dumaguete in Negros Oriental, and Tagbilaran in Bohol. Central Visayas consists of one hundred twenty (120) municipalities and two thousand, nine hundred sixty-four (2,964) barangays distributed as follows: a. CEBU - forty-seven (47) municipalities and one thousand one hundred seventy-two (1,172) barangays; b. BOHOL - forty-seven (47) municipalities and one thousand one hundred three (1,103) barangays; c. NEGROS ORIENTAL - twenty (20) municipalities and five hundred fifty-five (555) barangays; and d. SIQUIJOR - six (6) municipalities and one hundred thirty-four (134) barangays. Geography Region VII is located in the central part of the Philippine archipelago. Its geographic boundaries are the Visayan Sea in the north and Mindanao Sea in the south. The island of Leyte defines its eastern borders and Negros Occidental marks its western limits. The whole region occupies a total land area of 1,492,310 hectares which is approximately 6% of the total land area of the entire Philippines.

It is essential for the university to provide opportunities of learning and assistance to residents in the community especially those who has no access to education or work opportunities. The lessons learned by students in the classroom and the knowledge and skills of teachers and non-teaching staff should cascade to partner communities. This descriptive quantitative survey conducted in 2016, sampled 100 mothers in Village Opao, Mandaue City, Cebu to ascertain the community needs assessment prior to implementation of extension activities. Village Opao, Mandaue City is officially adopted by University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue in 2016 as its second partner community. The research instrument was created by the researchers with questions on 4 sections: personal information, housing and environment, health, and community organizations. The mothers were purposively identified with the following inclusion criteria: 16 to 80 years old, with a child/with children and registered in the village as a voter. Descriptive statistics specifically mode was used. Researchers have identified that the sustainable programs of the university for Village Opao, Mandaue City shall include literacy, livelihood, backyard gardening, livestock raising, flooding, family planning, administration of tetanus toxoid, and community participation programs.
