Sparkman & Stephens: 75 years of Naval Architecture The following piece is based on an article written by Hervé Eliès in 2004 to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of S&S. We remember this on the occasion of S&S’s 85th anniversary. Hervé Elies joined the association in its early days after a chance meeting with founder member Terry Sprake in La Rochelle in 1993. He raced under RORC rules throughout the 60's and 70's and continued with his 1962 S&S Palynodie II which he acquired just before meeting Terry. His last trip was to Cowes in 2007. Although he no longer owns an S&S yacht he continues as an active member of the Association. Terry Sprake with friends aboard his S&S yacht Mornings End in 1993. The Nevins Yacht yard --- builder of the NY 32 class in 1936 Draft (2020) Did the NY32 arrive to help Nevins' yard stay afloat ? or was it mostly to replace the NY 30s ? Many can agree that the stock market crash in September 1929 in the United States marked the beginning of what became known as the Great Depression, both in the US and globally. This effect on the economy was not immediately seen, but took few to several years to become obvious. As Pete Smyth wrote (Marine Business, 1978), "It took three years for the crash of 1929 to put a real stranglehold on the boating business." (p70). He offered the number of pages of Motor Boating's annual boat show issue -- 500 in 1929 vs 270 in 1932 -- as an example. One of the 'finest boats' he goes on to mention built in the thirties were Dorade and Brilliant. Smyth ends his article (p.73) with -- "By the early forties, the country was back on its feet economically. Cautious optimism prevailed in the marine trades. Whether that optimism was justified, however, is purely hypothetical because the Japanese had other ideas." Bob Garland (Mystic, OH 94-27) was a broker with S&S in the 1930s and returned in 1946 after serving five and a half years in the Navy. He was S&S president following Olin and preceding Rod. By 1935-37 business was excellent with Olin well established prior to Ranger. But in 1932-33, they were "giving boats away" -- all very cheap then. There were no formal agreements for sales or surveys. -

Secretary UK Dear Member, I write to introduce myself , initially I was one of the four founding members of this association in 1993 created to honour the magic designs of Olin & Rod Stephens .The S&S Association has exceeded all our expectations and become a most impressive international organization as our Members year book proves. Over the last 9 years I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you at our events. This years AGM was held in Venice and we were the guests of the Italians, in particular Matteo & Guila Salamon. VENICE on February 15th. Last Updated: 1:48AM BST 17 Sep 2008 Stephens on perhaps his finest yacht, during America's Cup trials Photo: GETTY Olin Stephens, who died on September 13 aged 100, was the most revered yacht designer of the 20th century. Together with his brother Rod and the yacht broker Drake Sparkman, he founded the New York naval architectural practice, Sparkman & Stephens. The "S&S" design tag was carried by more than 2,200 racing and cruising yachts, including six successful defenders of the America's Cup – an unsurpassed record. Among his clients was Sir Edward Heath, who had four of his five Morning Clouds created by the Manhattan firm. Olin Stephens was also intimately involved in most of the major handicapping systems employed in offshore racing, not least because he could spot flaws in the most arcane mathematical formulae yet still appreciate what such algorithms could mean for the aesthetics and seaworthiness of a yacht. The Stephens brothers made their name in 1931 when they raced the 52ft yawl Dorade in the Transatlantic Race. While passing the Scilly Isles they signalled the Coastguard station "Which am I?", and received back, "You are first". It was the start of a six-decade domination of both offshore and inshore racing classes, and after winning that year's Fastnet race as well they were given a ticker-tape welcome home in New York. The son of an anthracite trader, Olin James Stephens II was born in the Bronx on April 13 1908, nine months after his brother Rod.
