The WOMEN hum and play while BÜLBÜL and Setting: Stambul (Istanbul) DJAMILEH dance. The music continues after the dance is finished. At the end, all the WOMEN come to KONDJA’s door and bow.) A small, elegant ladies’ salon in KEMAL PASHA’S palace during the last years of the Ottoman Empire. Very luxuriously furnished, like the rooms of Scene 2 a young European lady. In the background are several rectangular Desireé, Bülbül and Harem Women windows, which, though covered with grillwork, reveal a glorious panorama of Stambul (Istanbul) with its mosques and minarets in magical sunlight. To Desireé the right is a door that leads to the daughter’s bedroom. Above the (Enters from upstage door) bedroom door is a quote from the Koran, embroidered in gold on velvet. In Is Kondja awake? the back of the room is a door that leads to the Pasha’s quarters. The room is lavishly furnished with Turkish rugs, an elegant ladies’ desk with a Bülbül telephone and a small table with books in modern bindings. To the right Yes, she just woke up! stands a “Perdah,” a silk partition on a wooden frame, which is the same (A GONG is struck) color as the salon. She’s calling us. Quick, let us run to her! (The WOMEN exit) Scene 1 BülBül, Djamileh and Harem Women Scene 3 Kemal Pasha and Desireé As the CURTAIN rises, we see seven or eight pretty CIRCASSIAN WOMEN enveloped in Oriental headdresses, each of them very tasteful (KEMAL PASHA enters quickly.     l CHAPTER NINE ; 1873 1875 – : Carmen hile Bizet was writing wind pieces and orchestrating all 1200 pages Wof Carmen, Geneviève was with him in Bougival during the summer of 1874; at least that seems to have been the arrangement they came to, however pre- carious. There is strong evidence to suggest that Geneviève was more than usually friendly with one of her husband’s friends, Élie-Miriam Delaborde, a virtuoso pia- nist whose talent he inherited from his father, the equally remarkable Alkan, and who spent the summer nearby in Bougival. Bizet was aware of her warm feelings for Delaborde, which she did not hide.1 The manner in which members of the Halévy family destroyed or concealed crucial evidence suggests that something was amiss. The appearance, however, is of a threesome who got on well enough. Delaborde, like Bizet, enjoyed swimming. He was a vigorous athlete, an advocate of the pedal-piano, an experienced traveller, and the possessor of innumerable apes and parrots as pets—congenial and interesting company, in other words. The most significant pointer to Geneviève’s interest in Delaborde is the marriage contract they both signed in August 1876, scarcely a year after Bizet’s death.2 The marriage did not take place; both parties eventually married other spouses. But this is a mat- ter in which gossip passed down through the years seems for once to have been right. Geneviève nevertheless told Gounod later that there was not a moment of her six years with Bizet she would not want to live again.3 We have at the same time to contend with the parallel gossip that linked Bizet to Galli-Marié.

The leading lady is a woman who sings unabashedly of her appetite for l’amour, cigarette smoke billowing from her lips. And the music—some of the most iconic in the art form— can’t help but get under one’s skin; it’s that tuneful and seductive. This May, Seattleites will be able to experience this titillating opera for themselves through a new production of Carmen under the baton of Maestro Giacomo Sagripanti, who returns following The Barber of Seville (’17). Renowned British director Paul Curran and production designer Gary McCann will treat audiences to lavish sets and a multitude of stylish factory girls, townsfolk, smugglers, soldiers, and toreadors. Singing the title role are two of the United States’ most in-demand Carmens: Ginger Costa-Jackson, who returns after singing Dorabella in Così fan tutte (‘18), and Latvian soprano Zanda Švēde, in her company debut. Don José will be sung by Scott Quinn (Boris in Katya Kabanova, ’17) and British tenor Adam Smith in his house, role, and U.S. debuts. Not all aspects of this Carmen will rely on tradition. Through lobby displays, a panel discussion, program articles, and more, Seattle Opera hopes to create a conversation surrounding this work, which, in addition to sultry tunes, is known for its famous ending: Carmen is violently stabbed to death by her jealous ex-lover.
