Water Caltrop Trapa natans Also known as: Water Chestnut, Buffalo Nut Rating: 0.0 ( 0 votes)
This description is for Water Caltrop (Trapa natans):
An obscure floating aquatic plant, trapa natans is much more commonly known as the water caltrop. Its small leaves are almost diamond shaped, with its longer sides deeply serrated. The leaves are mid-green in colour, sometimes flushed red near the edges, and grow in tight clumps. In early summer, it produces tiny white blossoms, while its fruit is a nut, sometimes shaped like the horns of a bull or buffalo, thus earning it the name, the buffalo nut. The water caltrop thrives in slow-moving water, making it ideal for garden ponds. Water temperatures cannot be too low, so indoor growth may be necessary until temperatures rise. Outdoors, it prefers loamy soil and full sun exposure.
