Rabat

The history of Rabat is closely connected to that of Salé, the site of which was first occupied by the Roman settlement of Sala (Shella). During the 10th century, Salé was established by the Zanātah Imazighen (), who were Sunni Muslims, to house the nonconformist Barghawāṭah Imazighen. Rabat itself was founded in the 12th century by ʿAbd al-Muʾmin, the first Almohad ruler, as a ribāṭ (fortified monastery) at which to quarter the troops for his jihad (holy war) in Spain. He later abandoned his efforts in Spain in order to concentrate his efforts on the conquest of North Africa. It was the third Almohad sultan, Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb al-Manṣūr, who named the place Ribāṭ al- Fatḥ (“Camp of Conquest”), from which the name of the present city is derived. He also erected the great fortified wall within which the modern town has developed, and he began construction of an enormous mosque, of which the notable Tower of Hassān, its half-completed minaret, remains. After 1609 the unified community of Rabat-Salé became the home of large num- bers of Andalusian Moors who had been driven from Spain and, later, of the so-called Sallee Rovers, the most dreaded of the Barbary pirates (also known as corsairs). Under the French, Rabat was made the administrative capital, and, upon Moroccan independence, it was designated, together with Salé, an urban prefecture; it now embraces an area of 492 square miles (1,275 square km). The , still surrounded by ramparts, lies near the coast. Within its fortifications are the medina (old Muslim town) and the millah (Jewish quarter). To the north, on a cliff above the Bou Regreg, stands the 17th-century fortress of Casbah des Oudaïa, with a splendid 12th-century Almohad gateway, an Andalusian garden, and an adjoining madrasah (religious college) that houses a museum of Moroccan art. Southeast of the old town are a number of outstanding historical structures, including the Tower of Hassān and the foundations of its never-completed mosque, across from which is located the mausoleum of Muḥammad V. To the southwest of the old town are an archaeological museum and the city gate, Bab al-Rouah, also dating from the Almohad rule. The modern quarter of Rabat is partly enclosed by the fortified wall. Relatively modern structures, including a royal palace built in the 1950s, Muḥammad V University (founded 1957), the national library, and various administrative buildings, are lo- cated in the city’s southern outskirts. Various national embassies can be found throughout the modern city, and a number of international organizations have offices there. No longer a port of any significance because of the silting up of the river mouth, the city is now the centre of an important textile industry and is noted for its carpets, blankets, and leather handicrafts. Other economic activities include fruit and fish processing and the manufacture of bricks and asbestos. Rabat is connected to Casablanca (57 miles [92 km] to the southwest) and (174 miles [280 km] to the northeast) by road and railway, and it has an international airport. Pop. (2004) city, 621,480; Rabat- Salé metro. area, 1,622,860

Meknes Meknès is a Moroccan Imperial cities and is situated about 70 km away from Fez. With several monuments, the historical centre of Meknes is on UNESCO's list of world heritage. One of the reasons for this distinction is the simplicity of the original constructions maintained over the centuries. It was in the 17th century that the Sultan Moulay Ismail decided to transform Meknes in one of the most beautiful and powerful imperial cities of Morocco. The impressive 40 km of walls protected the monuments to this day. There are plenty of mosques in Meknes, which earned him the name of "city of a hundred ". The whole city is extremely pleasant to dive completely into everyday life in Morocco. But there are some highlights of places to see and visit in Meknes. The great mosque, founded probably in the 12th century, has fantastic carved gates. The medina of Meknes deserves a lengthy tour to get to know the streets and find the ruins of the Royal Palace. In the medina all happens. El-Hedime square, between the old city and the imperial area of Meknès, is the maximum exponent of agitation, with fire-eaters, storytellers, animal trainers and jugglers entertain and tourists. Not to be missed even in Meknes Bab Mansour gate at the entrance of the city proper, built in the early 18TH century. Some say it's the most beautiful gate of the world. Very close is the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, whose Mosque is open to non-Muslims. The regional Ethnographic Museum in Meknès, in the Palace Dar Jamaï, has a fabulous Andalusian garden and show pieces that are testimony to the cultural wealth of the Kingdom of Morocco. Just 30 km from Meknes is the impressive Roman archaeological site of Volubilis, also world heritage UNESCO. The trip is done through the prosperous fertile fields that produce cereals, olives and grapes.

Today it is an important cultural and spiritual center, and the third holy city of Islam, after Mecca and Medina. One of the most comprehensive and comprehensive works on the city's history, its architectural and artistic treasures, its numerous sages and saints, is Titus Burckhardt's Fez City. In 810 was built the Mosque of Qarawiyyin or Karueein, and remains to this day the largest and oldest mosque in Africa. It has since been that the city was mainly occupied by Muslims. From 1170 to 1180, Fez was the largest city in Morocco and the main city of the Kingdom of Fez. It was the religious and scientific center of the Western world, where Christians and Muslims from all over Europe and Morocco came to study. After the Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 1492 there was an exodus of Muslims and it was from that time that the population of the city increased. It was in 1548 that Fez became part of the Moroccan empire and in 1579 the conquests of the Moroccan empire, which had been initiated by Suleiman the Magnificent, ended. During the Alawite dynasty in 1649, Fez became a major trading center in Berber. Fez was also the capital of Morocco at various times, but in 1912 much of Morocco fell into French influence and Rabat was chosen as the nation's Capital. Marrakech MARRAKECH is a city in southwestern Morocco, close to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. It is known as the "red city", the "pearl of the south" or the "door of the south". Like many North African cities and the Middle East, Marrakech has a fortified city (the Almedina or Medina) and an adjacent modern city (called Gueliz). It is served by Ménara International Airport (RAK) and by rail link with Casablanca and the north of the country. One possible source pointed to the place name is the Berber expression mur (n) akuch, which means "Land of God". The name of the city is the origin of the toponym "Morocco". Before the arrival of the Almoravids in the 11th century, the region was ruled from the city of . When he decided to erect a new capital, the Almoravid chief, Abu Becre ibn Omar, chose to build it on the plain, in a neutral place between the territory of two tribes that competed for the honor of receiving the new city. The work began in May 1070, but Abu Becre was called to extinguish a revolt in the in January 1071, so that Marrakech was terminated by his replacement and future successor, Iuçufe ibn Tachfin. The heyday of the city was under the direction of Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al-Mansur, third Almohad Sultan, who initiated the construction of the mosque of Kutubia and of a new Kasbah. Before the reign of Moulay Ismail, Marrakech was the capital of Morocco. For centuries, Marrakech was known for its "seven saints". When was at the height of its popularity in the reign of Moulay Ismail, the festival of the seven saints was founded. The tombs of several well-known people were transferred to the city in order to attract pilgrims. The "seven saints" include Sidi Bel Abbas (patron of the city), Sidi Muhammad al-Jazuli, Sidi Abu al-Qasim Al-Suhayli, Cadi Ayyad ben Moussa and Abdallah al-Ghazwani. At the end of century XVII, the current Alauíta dynasty happened to the Saadians. The throne was successively transferred to Fez and Meknes.
