She hopes to continue to collaborate in local efforts in confronting environmental injustices in her community. Prior to working at WE ACT, Genesis was awarded a Fulbright Research Grant to study the impacts of climate change in agricultural practices in Quechua indigenous communities in Peru. Steve Adams Director - Urban Resilience- Institute for Sustainable Communities As the Director of Urban Resilience at the Institute for Sustainable Communities, Steve works to identify, catalyze and scale break-through opportunities to advance urban sustainability and resilience. Since leaving government in 2009, Steve has led community-based and sector-based adaptation projects in Oregon, helped catalyze the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact as a model for metro- regional scale climate governance and co-founded the American Society of Adaptation Professionals to serve as a community of practice for professionals working in various sub-fields of climate adaptation. From 2007-2009, Steve served as an energy and climate change policy advisor to Florida Governor Charlie Crist. Previously, he served in a number of roles at Florida's Department of Environmental Protection. In 2002-2003, he served as Senior Advisor to U.S. EPA Administrator Christie Todd Whitman’s Environmental Indicators Initiative. The International Peace Movement 1815-1914: an Outline
The international peace movement 1815-1914: an outline Script of an online lecture given by Guido Grünewald on 9 June 2020* I will try to give an outline of the emergence and development of an international peace movement during its first 100 years. Since English is not my mother tongue and I haven’t spoken it for a longer time I will follow a written guideline in order to finish the job in the short time I have. The first peace organisations emerged in America and in Britain. This was no coincidence; while on the European continent after the end of the Napoleonic Wars restoration took over there were evolving democracies in the anglo-Saxon countries and a kind of peace tradition as for example carried by the quakers who renounced any kind of war. For those early societies the question if a war could be defensive and therefore justified was from the beginning a thorny issue. The New York Peace Sciety founded by merchant David Low Dodge followed a fundamental pacifism rejecting all kind of wars while the Massachussets Peace Society (its founder was unitarian minister Noah Worcester) gathered both fundamental pacifists and those who accepted strictly defensive wars. With about 50 other groups both organisations merged to become the American Peace Society in 1828. The London Peace Society had an interesting top-tier approach: its leadership had to pursue a fundamental pacifist course while ordinary members were allowed to have different ideas about defensive wars. On the European continent some short-lived peace organisations emerged only later. The formation of those first societies occured under the influence of Quakers (one of the 3 historic peace churches which renounced violence) and of Christians who were convinced that war was murderous and incompatible with Christian values. -

A Value Framework for Community Psychology Erika Sanborne, 2002 INTRODUCTION “Community Psychology concerns the relationships of the individual to communities and society. Through collaborative research and action, community psychologists seek to understand and to enhance quality of life for individuals, communities, and society” (Dalton, Elias & Wandersman, 2001, p. 5). The work of community psychology is best understood in terms of the complementary core values that guide our reactions to, and interactions with others. To understand the possible roles of a community psychologist is to understand the underlying principles that govern how we approach a situation. The following us a discussion of key concepts integral to community psychology perspective. It is hoped that in reading the overview, the reader will gain an appreciation for the field of community psychology and for the valuable roles a community psychologist might play in our world. PREVENTION Rather than just reacting to a problem or issue and finding means with which to treat it, the ideal approach would be to identify ways to minimize or prevent the problem from ever occurring. To do this we look at precipitating factors and hope to intervene in meaningful ways that change environmental and/or personal factors, and that remove barriers to success and wellness, before disorder develops. A popular metaphor is used to help visualize how prevention looks in process: Two men are walking along the river. One spots a drowning person floating by. The walker jumps in and grabs the drowning person and he pulls him safely from the water. Before catching his breath he sees that his friend has jumped in to save another drowning person. -

They help point us to what is really important to change, versus what might be more trivial and lead to ineffective action. But first, let’s look closely at what theories enable us to do. Most simply, theories allow us to describe, predict, and better understand something. Here is an example: Newton observed that an apple fell from a tree. In that famous story, he was able to first describe the apple falling. It is the first part of the scientific journey, to describe something that you might see. The second step is to predict something based on what you just saw. For example, when Newton dropped a ball or other object, he predicted it would also fall, and that allowed him to be able to make predictions, which is the second part of a theory. Finally, a theory provides an “explanation” of what you just saw, in this case, the explanation being that gravity was causing the objects to fall to the earth. -
