Bio: Patti Anderson joined the faculty at Southern in June 2007. She graduated from Southwestern Adventist University in 1993 and completed her doctorate at the University of Texas at Arlington in 1999.
Her interests include reading biographies, mountain biking, racquetball, gardening, backpacking, and training her dog, Doc. She is married to Scot Anderson, a professor in the School of Computing.

9 Stephen Bauer Professor, School of Religion

Bio: Stephen Bauer joined the School of Religion in 1999, coming from a multi-church-district pastoral setting. His experience includes some inner-city work in New York City, though most of his ministry has been in the suburban setting. Bauer is a lifelong Adventist who was inspired by his parents’ living and practical faith in Jesus. Highly motivated by his belief that the end of all things is at hand, Bauer’s great burden is to equip others to live their lives by faith in what God says.

Bio: John Beckett has worked at Southern since 1975. He received a doctorate of business administration in information technology management from Nova South- eastern University in 2007.
He teaches classes in network administration and web development, among others.
Beckett enjoys doing research in the area of technology diffusion.

Bio: Krystal Bishop graduated in 1975 from Southern with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Her commitment to education led her to obtain a master’s in learning disabilities and a doctorate in special education from the University of South Florida.
Bishop was honored as Southern Adventist University’s Adviser of the Year in 2010. She also received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011.

Bio: Prior to coming to Southern in 2007, Mike Boyd taught at Union Springs Academy in New York. He has presented at both state and national conventions on the topics of health and activity.
Boyd has been a personal trainer since 2014 and has a passion for working with all demographics on improving personal fitness and health.
His hobbies include mountain biking, backpacking, indoor rock climbing, and many other sports and activities.

13 Rachel Byrd Professor, English Department

Bio: Before coming to Southern, Rachel Byrd taught at Takoma Academy, Highland View Academy, and Boonsboro High School in Maryland. She has also worked as an editor and writer. The mother of four children, she stayed home for 17 years. During that time, she taught Sabbath School and Vacation Bible School, assisted in her husband’s business, and homeschooled her children while coaching them in violin, cello, and piano as a “Suzuki mom.” She completed her doctorate in 16th-century literature at the University of Maryland in 1996 and began teaching at Southern in 1998.

Bio: Glenn Carter has financial leadership experience in the corporate world as well as several Seventh-day Adventist organizations. He holds master’s degrees in economics and accountancy and is especially interested in behavioral finance. Carter’s role at Southern includes oversight of the Admissions and Student Finance departments. His passion is helping students find a financial pathway to graduation that will position them for success in life.

15 Ken Caviness Professor, Physics and Engineering Department

Bio: The day after receiving his PhD in Physics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Caviness was on a plane heading for language study in Europe as preparation for teaching physics and math at a French- speaking Seventh-day Adventist university in Africa. Since returning to the United States, he has particularly enjoyed teaching physical science and religion, and he has published articles and given presentations both at home and abroad on related topics.
Caviness enjoys reading, language study, music, computer programming, and sharing ideas with others. He and his wife, Claryce, who is a college French teacher, have two adult children.

Bio: Outside of the office, Andy Compton is a vocalist and the performance coordinator for two singing groups, inSpirit (an all-male chorus) and HarmonyOne (a mixed-octet).
Compton has been singing for most of his life and has shared his music ministry in more than 200 churches nationwide.

17 Randy Craven Dean, School of Visual Art and Design

Bio: Randy Craven earned a bachelor’s degree in studio art in 1994 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He worked as a graphic designer in the local Media Department of the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital. He relocated to pursue advanced studies at Southern, graduating in 1999 with a master’s in education. In March 2000, Craven was able to combine his two great passions of art and teaching when he was asked to join the faculty of the School of Visual Art and Design.
Craven finds great enjoyment in outdoor activities, including canoeing, hiking, and camping, where he can take in the beauty of nature to relax, rejuvenate, and find inspiration.

18 Evonne Crook Director of Alumni Relations, Advancement

Bio: After graduating from Southern in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in English, Evonne Kutzner Crook taught elementary school and high school English, established and managed a pre-school, and worked at Southern in the Records Office, Counseling Services, and most recently Advancement. She began in the department in 1995 and has served in her current role since 2003. Her responsibilities include implementing activities and programs that build and nurture relationships with alumni constituents to engage them on behalf of the university.
In her personal time, Crook enjoys playing in a church bell choir, singing, bird watching, hiking, reading, traveling, and spending precious time with family and friends.

Bio: Michelle Doucoumes holds a master’s degree in business administration and has completed graduate work in evangelism and world missions. At Southern, she teaches general business courses and directs the Institute for Ethical Leadership, including the Enactus program for student entrepreneurship. Prior to joining the School of Business faculty, Doucoumes served as the director of the Wildwood Center for Health Evangelism and was a coordinator and founder of Southern’s Soul- winning And Leadership Training (SALT) program. She has spoken throughout North America as well as in South America and Europe and is passionate about helping lay people see how evangelism is possible in their local contexts and careers.

21 Leslie Evenson Director, Wellness Institute

Bio: Leslie Evenson coordinates community health education at Southern. She has held several positions in the wellness sector, ranging from working with the Chattanooga Health Department to being a P.E. teacher in Hawaii.
Evenson’s love for outdoor sports led her to complete a master’s degree in heath education from Loma Linda University. Some of her hobbies include traveling, cooking, and outdoor water sports.

Bio: Kathy Goddard has 30 years of teaching experience in all three levels of education. She also is a writer who has produced curriculum for the General Conference Sabbath School Department, the North American Divison Office of Education, and theIn Discipleship ministry. She contributed to the 2010 Journeys of Joy Bible study guide for women and is passionate about teaching simple Bible study methods that help others deepen their walk with God. In 2006, Goddard returned to the United States from mission service in Russia.

24 Tyson Hall Professor, School of Computing

Bio: Tyson Hall received his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Hall’s successes include receiving a patent for new field-programmable analog arrays, receiving the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Transactions on Education Best Paper of the Year award, and being named a New Faculty Fellow at the Frontiers in Education conference. He has also co- authored a digital systems textbook, six journal articles, and 16 peer-reviewed papers. For over a decade he has been event director for an Adventist youth robotics league tournament.

25 Michael Hasel Professor, School of Religion Director, Institute of Archaeology 423.236.2986

Bio: Michael Hasel came to Southern in 1998. He has participated and served in administrative capacities on eight different excavations to the Middle East and has lectured widely, speaking at university campuses, international symposia, professional meetings, and church meetings.
Hasel has served as the Samuel H. Kress Fellow at the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem and a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Cyprus-American Archaeological Research Institute in Nicosia, Cyprus. Hasel is the curator of the Lynn H. Wood Archaeological Museum (see page 85).

Bio: Hollis James completed his doctorate in special education with a supporting field of measurement and evaluation, his master’s degree in business administration, and his undergraduate degree in economics and history with a minor in sociology.
Before coming to Southern, James taught at three other universities. His area of expertise is instruction on special education.

29 Donald Keefe Assistant Professor, School of Visual Art and Design

Bio: Donald Keefe grew up in Southern California and has lived and worked all over the country. Coming from a secular Jewish background, his personal Bible stud- ies led him to accept Christ and join the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
He earned an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Florida after completing his BFA from the University of Kentucky. He also studied art in France at the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art. His artwork has been exhibited nationally, won awards, and been published several times. He has also completed private commissions and was the recipient of a federal grant for a public arts project.

30 Greg King Dean, School of Religion

Bio: After 17 years on the faculty of Pacific Union College, Greg King returned to his alma mater in 2004 and now serves as the dean of Southern’s School of Religion and a professor of biblical studies.
King’s speaking engagements have taken him to New Zealand, Brazil, and Austria. His articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Adventist Review, Andrews University Seminary Studies, Eerdman’s Dictionary of the Bible, Ministry, and Perspective Digest. He also authored the book Kings and Chronicles, which served as a companion volume to an adult Sabbath School quarterly.

31 Martin Klingbeil Professor, School of Religion

Bio: Martin G. Klingbeil grew up in southern Germany and studied theology at Seminar Schloss Bogenhofen, Austria, and Helderberg College, South Africa, completing a bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s in Semitic languages and a doctorate in ancient near- eastern studies. He joined Southern in January 2011 after serving as vice president of academic administra- tion at Helderberg College. He is an ordained minister and has pastored congregations in South Africa and Bolivia. Klingbeil is married to Thandi, a homemaker and homeschool teacher, and they have three sons. He fluently speaks German, English, and Spanish and can also communicate in French and Afrikaans.

In addition, Andrews University granted her a bachelor’s degree with a double major in elementary education/Spanish and a history minor.

Before coming to Southern, Martin held several positions in the Northern Asia-Pacific Division, taught classes at the graduate level in 13 colleges of the Southern and Northern Asia-Pacific Divisions, and led 255 people to baptism through public evangelism.

Bio: Alan Parker came to Southern from Amazing Facts, where he was vice president of evangelism and director of the College of Evangelism.
Hailing from South Africa, Parker studied theology at Helderberg College and was a pastor for a six- church district. He conducted his first full evangelistic series at the age of 16 and remains deeply involved in evangelism and evangelism training.
Parker has spoken to audiences in Africa and Europe and across North America. As a board member of Generation of Youth for Christ, he is passionate about an army of young people who can change their world.

Bio: Mariella Pechero came to Southern in 2014 as the coordinator for Disability Support Services. She graduated from Southwestern Adventist University in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, attended law school, and received her juris doctor degree in 1994. She practiced law in Texas for 20 years, litigating and mediating family law issues while also focusing on issues revolving advocating for autism awareness and acceptance. She returned to school and in 2013 received her master’s degree in special education.
Pechero is licensed to practice law in Tennessee. She is a strong educational advocate for unique individuals and is thankful not everyone is “the same.”

A lifelong Seventh-day Adventist and ordained elder, Royo played a key role in establishing four Spanish-speaking churches in the United States and two abroad. She has conducted sermons, presentations, and seminars in English and Spanish.

She worked as a food service supervisor and consulting dietitian for a year in Pullman, Washington, before completing a master’s degree at Washington State University. She worked with the local Adventist church to start and run a vegetarian deli/outreach center on the WSU campus. She and her husband then moved to Java to teach at Universitas Advent Indonesia. They later transitioned to Southern to continue working with young adults.
The Snyders have three children. They enjoy hiking, camping, backpacking, and hosting groups of students at their home.

He grew up near Andrews University, where he finished both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology. He then earned a doctorate in zoology at Washington State University. Snyder spent nine years as professor and chair of the Biology Department at West Indonesia Union College in Java.

Bio: Laurie Stankavich graduated with her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Andrews University and served as a student missionary in Taiwan. She earned her master’s in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington, then went to Sichuan, China, to teach English at a technical university. Later, she worked at the Universidad Adventista de Centroamerica in Costa Rica and then returned to Taiwan to help develop an international secondary school in Taipei.
After coming back to the United States, Stankavich spent three years teaching English and Spanish at Union Springs Academy in upstate New York, where she had a chance to help native speakers develop their writing abilities and also work with Karen and African refugees.

He also served as pastor of the Hampden Heights and Philadelphia Boulevard churches in Pennsylvania as well as the Cross City Seventh-day Adventist Church in Florida. Tryon earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern, and his master’s of divinity and doctorate of ministry degrees at Andrews University. He is in the process of attaining a PhD in leadership from Andrews.

Info: Southern’s 1,300-acre campus includes more than 30 miles of trails on Bauxite Ridge and White Oak Mountain that are open to public walkers, hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country trail runners, with sections of varying difficulty that make it suitable for anything from a lazy meander to a muscle-toning endurance workout.
The pine and hardwood forest through which the trails wind is also a paradise for the nature enthusiast, with wildflowers, birds, a creek habitat, and many other natural features. And for the avid geocacher, the trails host a treasure trove of exciting caches.
Trailheads and printed maps for White Oak Mountain’s trails are located in the outdoor kiosks near the Outdoor Education Center and Summerour Hall. The trailhead for Bauxite Ridge is at the end of Sunkist Terrace off College Drive East.

Info: With more than 200 horizontal feet of 40- to 60-foot climbs, as well as plenty of surrounding bouldering opportunities, the Goliath Wall has been bolted for top rope use and boasts many climbing routes.
The Goliath Wall also serves as a beautiful limestone backdrop for the large natural amphitheater created during its excavation, where Southern’s student body can gather for lawn concerts, bonfires, vespers, and other events.
There is no charge for recreational climbing. Classes and reserved groups have priority access to the wall; individual climbers are then welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. All climbers must sign the waiver located in the Goliath Wall kiosk and follow the posted rules.

Info: The Lynn H. Wood Archaeological Museum contains more than 200 objects from Egypt, Babylonia, Persia, Syria-Palestine, Greece, Cyprus, and Anatolia. Highlights of the exhibit include an ancient Babylonian brick stamped with Nebuchadnezzar’s name, a complete series of lamps from the Chalcolithic to the early Arabic periods, a rare Syrian clay model of a chariot, handwritten cuneiform tablets from ancient Ur, and a series of Syrian toggle pins from the Middle Bronze Age. It is the largest teaching collection of ancient Near Eastern ceramics in North America.

Info: Southern’s Teaching Materials Center (TMC) provides students, faculty, and community members with one of the most comprehensive collections of teaching resources in Southeast Tennessee. The TMC houses more than 15,000 curriculum guides, textbooks, teacher’s resources, literature for children and young adults, VHS and DVD videos, CDs, educational games and activities, as well as many artifacts from around the world. Journals and magazines about teaching are available for reference. Patrons can borrow posters and pictures from the TMC’s bulletin board files or cut shapes and letters from a large collection of die cuts. The TMC’s work center makes preparing bulletin boards and other teaching materials easy.

Info: Classical 90.5 WSMC-FM provides students, faculty, and community members with on- and off-site recording services, access to its music library, and tours and workshops for visiting groups. The productions team can design and implement large- and small-scale recording projects in our studios or on location. Projects can be designed to include post-production audio editing as well. WSMC’s music library contains more than 6,000 classical music CDs and more than 1,000 vinyl records. Visitors are welcome to access the library on-site during business hours or by appointment for research and educational purposes. Visitors are also welcome for studio tours, and one-hour workshops and educational sessions are available on-site for visiting school groups.
