Q.What is the battle of Armageddon all about? “They gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.” —Revelation 16:16

The word “Armageddon” is something of a mystery, appearing only in this verse A.and nowhere else in Greek literature. It has been variously translated. For instance, it is har-megiddon, “the mount of the assembly;” or chormah gedehon, “the destruction of their army.” It is often thought that Armageddon harkens back to the many battles in Israel’s history centering around the mountain of Megiddo. This is also the same location where Gideon, the fifth judge of Israel, and his outnumbered army experienced a miraculous victory against a confederacy of three enemies. It is also helpful to know the word “Gideon” means “tree feller,” “lumberjack,” or “one who cuts to pieces.” Several times in the story God speaks to Gideon, and that phrase spoken in Hebrew is translated ‘âmar gid‛ôn or aw-mar’ghid-ohn’ (Judges 7:7). This battle in Megiddo led by Gideon reminds us of a time when God’s people were facing extermination, but the Lord fought for them and they experienced total victory. (See 2 Chronicles 20.) Contrary to what most people believe, the battle of Armageddon is not a typical war between political powers—such as Russia, China, and Israel. Instead, I believe it is the final battle between Christ and Satan and their respective followers. The first phase of Armageddon is detailed in Revelation 12:17, when the dragon makes war with the woman: “The dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God.” I believe that Satan will someday soon impersonate Christ and encourage the world to worship the beast. Revelation reveals several ways in which he will deceive the world through false representations.
