A total of 63 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (22 families 37 genera 44 species), Marchantiophyta (7 families 11 genera 18 species), and Antho- cerotophyta (1 family 1 genus 1 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was 30.2%. The predominant life form was the mat form. The rates of bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that such forests are widespread in this study area. Moreover, the rock was the substrate type, which plays a major role in providing micro-habitats for bryophytes. We suggest that more detailed studies of the bryophyte flora should be conducted on a regional scale to provide basic data for selecting indicator species of Gotjawal and evergreen broad-leaved forests on Jejudo Island. Box 299 St. Louis, Missouri 63166-0299, U.S.A. Abstract. There are 26 species of Campylopus in Central America. They are divided into three groups on the basis of two characters: the presence or absence in the costa of a ventral layer of enlarged, hyaline cells and the presence or absence in the stem of an outer hylodermis. Dicranum costaricensis Bartr. is transferred to Campylopus as C. valerioi nom. nov. Campylopus hoffmanii and C. standleyi are recognized as distinct species. Six new synonyms are proposed: C. straminifolius = C. densicoma; C. costaricensis = C. surinamensis; C. roellii = C. tallulensis; C. donnellii = C. zygodonticarpus; C. tuerckheimii = C. zygodonticarpus; C. sargii = C. zygodonticarpus. About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -

Plants 2–5 cm, yellowish green, Records of Campylopus schimperi from Mexico and 5 the Andes are doubtful. The taxonomic value of this 5 stiff, evenly foliate, the perichaetia species has often been doubted. It was frequently in comal tufts. Leaves 5–6 mm, regarded as a variety of C. subulatus, which is similar in erect-patent when wet, appressed several respects. Campylopus schimperi, however, has when dry, from oblong base more elongate, distal laminal cells (1:4 instead of 1:1.5– gradually contracted to a long subula, ending in a straight, 2) and abaxially nearly smooth costa (ridged in C. hyaline, serrate tip; alar cells hardly differentiated; basal subulatus). Furthermore, C. schimperi is a species of laminal cells thin-walled, rectangular, hyaline; distal arctic-alpine habitats and C. subulatus is found at low laminal cells chlorophyllose, oval to narrow or elongate 1 2 elevations. These anatomical as well as ecological oval, incrassate; costa filling /2– /3 of leaf width, in differences indicate that C. schimperi should be regarded transverse section showing adaxial hyalocysts as large as as a separate species. -

Eight new localities of Pottia intermedia (Turner) Fürnr. are recorded from Honshu and Shikoku (Hiroshima, Kagawa and Ehime Prefs.), SW Japan. Although it is widely distributed in the world, this species is a rare moss in Japan and is previously known from Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu for Japan. Japanese populations of P. intermedia grow on soil in open sites, especially in citrus orchards. Analytical illustrations with SEM images of peristome, spores and leaf papillae and a discussion on the phyloge- netic position of this species are provided based on the materials collected. ФЕДОСОВ1 Abstract Three species of Dicranum with fragile leaves were usually recognized in Rus- sia: D. fragilifolium, D. tauricum and D. viride. However, our revision based on morphology and nrITS sequences reveals that two more species were overlooked. Collections from the Russian Far East, including both mainland and the Kuril Is- lands, usually treated as D. viride were found to be different from the european D. viride, thus supporting the resurrection of D. hakkodense Cardot that was synonymised with D. viride and not accepted for a long time as a distinct species. In addition to the resurrection of D. hakkodense, its distributional range is much expanded. One more species, Dicranum pacificum sp. nov. was revealed among the collections from Kam- chatka, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. It is clearly separated from the superficially similar D. fragilifolium, although probably not closely related to it. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that the group of Dicranum with fragile leaves is not monophyletic. Other important collectors or students of Wisconsin Bryophytes include C. Barnes (WIS), F. Bowers (UWSP), L. Cheney (WIS), G. Conklin (WIS), J. Christy (MPM), R. Evans (WIS), S. Freckmann (UWSP), H. Iltis (WIS), R. Koch (UWL), and M. Nee (WIS).
