School of Theology - Seton Hall University file:///Volumes/Site%20Backups/theology%2020090910/lecture... A CENTURY OF PAPAL REPRESENTATION IN THE UNITED STATES Reverend Timothy M. Dolan Kenrick-Glennon Seminary Archdiocese of St. Louis Archbishop Gerety Lecture at Seton Hall University, October 15, 1992 "Hence we cheerfully sent one who should represent Our Person..." wrote Pope Leo XII in his encyclical Longinqua Oceani1 to the Church of the United States, January 6, 1895, referring to the appointment of the first apostolic delegate, Archbishop Francesco Satolli, just two years previous. That January 21, 1993, will be the centennial of this event suggested the topic of this year's Archbishop Gerety Lecture, "A Century of Papal Representation in the United States." Thank you for the invitation to be part of this distinguished lecture series. For the record, I have dedicated this meagre effort to the preeminent church historian of the United States, Monsignor John Tracy Ellis, my teacher, mentor and friend who, at 87, is now recuperating from hip surgery in Washington, D.C. May the Lord of Truth whom he has served so diligently be close to him in his recovery. I propose to develop this topic under five points. First, I will treat the way the Holy See approached America prior to Archbishop Satolli's appointment; secondly, I will consider the give-and-take surrounding his nomination in 1893; then will come a staccato-like overview of the comings-and-goings of his 10 successors; fourthly, I will take a look at just what, in general, the delegates have done, offering two examples of their activities; and, finally, I will conclude with a segment on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the government of the United States. -
The Use of the Bow No
Sermon #1694 Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit 1 THE USE OF THE BOW NO. 1694 DELIVERED AT THE THURSDAY EVENING LECTURE, BY C. H. SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON. “And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son: (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher).” 2 Samuel 1:17, 18. THE translators have acted very properly in inserting the words, “the use of,” for that is what the passage means. But if you read it without those words, the sense is still the same— “He bade them teach the chil- dren of Judah the bow,” that is to say, how to use the bow. In modern times, critics have said that by the expression, “the bow,” is meant the song which David composed. And to sustain their notion, they quote from the Koran of Mahomet in which they tell us that there is a certain chapter called, “the Bow,” and, therefore, David called his song, “the bow,” as if so late an instance of oriental usage was at all to the point. I declare that there is nothing whatever in Scripture to justify the state- ment that the words, “the bow,” can be applied to David’s lament! No doubt, some of the Psalms have titles given to them, but there is never an instance of a Psalm being quoted by its title. It is quoted by its number, never by its name. I accept the passage as our learned transla- tors understood it—David bade them teach the children of Judah the bow. -

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY a Recent Conference Held at the New York
A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY A recent conference held at the New York School focused on the Father Edward McGlynn controversy. Dr. McGlynn, a contemporary of Henry George, was excarrnunicated from the Catholic Church because of a bitter battle with his superior, Archbishop Corrigan of New York. Ignited by the spirit of George, Father McGlynn campaigned for him during the 1886 mayoral race. His advocacy of the Georgist solution to the land problem brought him into conflict with various church officials. It was a controversy that shook the foundations of the church in the United States, 1eadingeventually to a letter from George to Pope Leo XIII in defense of Father McGlynn. Although the excommunication was lifted, many questions were left unanswered. An important one concerned the role religious groups and organizations should play in social matters. This question was hotly debated for the next 100 years. Significant changes have occured, however -- not only within the Catholic Church, but in other denominations as well. Today, the Church has enmeshed itself in such crucial -conce-rns-as--the-nucicpr arrn race.- ------ -- Having expressed their views on war, the struggle for military superiority and the advancement of weapons technologies, the Catholic Bishops of the United States will turn their attention, in the near future, to American capitalism. Without question, advocates of Henry George should be tuned in to the Bishop's prognosis for our economic system. The slow process of preparing a statement on such a wide-ranging issue offers Georgists a golden opportunity to enter the dialogue in an atmosphere radically different from Father McGlynn's era. -
