144 TAPAS Octubre 2016 THE CHAMPAGNE ACE In just one decade, his metallic bottles of champagne have become the most sought after in the region. What is Armand de Brignac’s secret? TEXT TONI GARCÍA 145 TAPAS Octubre 2016 146 TAPAS Octubre 2016 or any champagne lover, hearing the last name Cattier is a guarantee of something legendary. The maison Cattier is thought of as one of the best champagne brands in a universe filled with fierce competition. The brand has Flearned how to reinvent itself and survive the crisis which for several years, seemed to threaten every sector of the global economy. The merit, as usual, is credited to more than one person. But in this case there are two people especially worth mentioning: Jean-Jacques Cattier and his son Alexandre. Jean-Jacques, the winery’s leader and patriarch, has learned how to maintain the brand’s quality standards, even if that means having to give up certain benefits. On the other hand, Jean-Jacques’ son Alexandre was responsible for a master move that many others after him have tried to replicate to no avail. “It was around the year 2000 when Alexandre said to me: ‘Dad, we should try to set ourselves apart from the competition by making an extraordinary top-quality brand,” says Jean-Jacques. “Years before that, around the 1940’s or 1950’s, I had already thought about having another brand devoted solely to special occasions, but for several reasons we vetoed the idea and left it in hibernating mode. That being said, we did have a name for it: De Brignac,” he adds.

  • Armand De Brignac Experience —

  • Champagne Armand De Brignac Brut Gold
GOLD BRUT A Modern Day Prestige Cuvée, Emblematic of Tradition Armand de Brignac Gold Brut was the first cuvée introduced to the portfolio and is the flagship. The Cattier family’s ambition during a New Year’s celebration in Chigny-les-Roses was to create the very best prestige cuvée for the 21st century, while still reflecting the rich traditions of winemaking in Champagne. It is in this way that the mastery of blending – vintages, terroirs and grape varieties – is at the essence of Armand de Brignac’s philosophy. ASSEMBLAGE 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier. Multi-vintage: 2009, 2010 & 2012 DOSAGE ABV 9 g/L 12.5% TASTING NOTES Peach, apricot and red berry aromas are followed by crystalized citrus, orange blossom and hints of brioche. The palate is rich with cherries, exotic fruits and a touch of lemon, vanilla and honey. The mouth feel is soft and creamy, with a hint of toastiness, from the unique Armand de Brignac dosage which is aged for one year in French oak barrels. CELLARING POTENTIAL Drinking beautifully now or can be rested under ideal cellaring conditions, until 2025. FOOD PAIRINGS Ideal as an aperitif or pairs perfectly with seared scallops, roasted quail and fresh water fish. ACCOLADES 95 points. - Christelle Guibert, Decanter Magazine, November 2016 93 points. Armand de Brignac NV ‘Ace of Spades’ Brut Gold Champagne, France Dry Med Sweet ALCOHOL -Jean-Jacques Cattier -Jean-Jacques 12.5% VARIETY Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier Colour Notes Diamond-like persistent bubbles rise from the pale blond, golden tinted cuvée. Aroma Notes A complex, full-bodied bouquet. Fresh and lively, with light floral notes. Palate Notes On the palate, a racy fruit character perfectly integrated with the wine’s subtle brioche accents. The Champagne’s texture is deliciously creamy, with great depth paired with a long, silky finish. “To define Armand de Brignac in three words I would say, say, would I words Armand de Brignac in three define “To I like and sometimes and Excellence Tradition, Exclusivity, Armand de Brignac is a 21st Century use this image, to way.” Champagne made in the traditional Armand de Brignac NV ‘Ace of Spades’ Brut Gold Champagne, France Decanter - Christelle Guibert 95 Points The nose is full of flavours and rich with notes of white flowers and crème patissière. However, the palate is crisp, fresh and delicate with a lovely creamy texture. It is elegant, refined and very stylish... It’s a pleasant combination of power and concentration blended with finesse and elegance. While the dosage is 9g/l, it feels much drier, more like a 5g/l and this probably due to the spinal cord of acidity. -Jean-Jacques Cattier -Jean-Jacques Wine & Spirits Magazine 94 Points The refinement of the bubbles and impeccable pale color brought James Bond to mind for one taster, ‘the new Bond, the blond Bond’ ..

Roederer Cristal he says. “I am extremely impressed by the new Blanc was the initial brand of choice in its clear, gold- de Noirs, which will keep for decades, and I think labelled bottle – satisfactorily expensive, it looked they have refined the taste of the Gold recently, great in an ice bucket on a nightclub table and made making it drier and more sophisticated – they are its way into rap and hiphop lyrics.
