McCurry, co-chairs of the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). today announced six new members elected to the CPD's board of directors. They are: a Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., President, Purdue University a Charles Gibson, Former Anchor. ABC World News with Charles Gibson a Jane Harman, Director, President and CEO, Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars a Leon E. Panetta, Chairman, Panetta Institute for Public Policy a Olympla Jean Snowe, Former U.S. Senator a Dr. Shirley M. Tilghman, Former President. Princeton University Fahrenkopf and McCuny noted that "Presidential debates reach more viewers and listeners than any other political programming. They educate voters and motivate citizens to leam about the candidates and the issues. The CPD is dedicated to developing formats that will allow these exchanges to best serve the publie, and we are grateful to engage our six new directors in planning for 2016. Their individual and eollective experience in public service, media and education is extensive and respected. We are honored to have them join the CPD." In addition to the co-chairs, the current CPD directors are Howard G. Buffett, John C. Danforth, John Griffen, Antonia Hernandez, Reverend John I. Jenkins, Newton N. Minow, Richard D. Parsons, Dorothy Ridings, and Alan K. Simpson. The co-chairs also noted that the new directors would be involved in the CPD's international work. U.S. debates are watched in real time by world-wide audiences. Groups in other countries, panicularly emerging democracies, that seek to start their own debates contact the CPD for assistance on issues ranging from candidate negotiation to format and production. For more than twenty years, the CPD has worked with the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) to help these groups initiate or improve debates in their countries. In connection with these collaborative efforts, NDI has launched www.debate5intemati0nal.org. a website intended to serve as a resource for groups in other countries. An informal association of those groups. Debates International, has contributed much of the material on the new website. For instance, Twain’s Roughing It (1872), De Quille’s Big Bonanza (1876) and Eliot Lord’s Comstock Mining & Mines (1883) off er an in-depth and anecdote-rich— whether fact or fi ction—glance into early Nevada and its mining camp way of life.

    Remarks at the Republican Governors Club Annual Dinner October 15, 1987 It's a great honor to be with you tonight. Let me just begin by expressing special thanks to Governors Tom Kean and Mike Castle, chairman and vice chairman of the RGA [Republican Governors Association], John Rollins, the finance chairman and vice chairman of the -- or Glen Holden, I should say, who's exceptional efforts have helped to make this evening a success. Thank you all for being so generous. And of course, I must also recognize our national chairman, Frank Fahrenkopf, who is here. You know, whenever I'm asked to speak at a dinner, I get a little self-conscious about the length of a speech. And this is really inappropriate, but I'm going to tell it anyway. I hope you haven't heard it before, because usually I'm an after-dinner speaker instead of a before-dinner speaker. But the joke that I was going to tell you was a little story that took place in ancient Rome at the Coliseum. A little band of Christians out there in the sand on the floor of the Coliseum, crowd up there in the seats, and then they were going to turn the lions loose on them. And they did. And the lions came roaring out and charging down on this little huddled mass of people. And one of them stepped forward and said a few quiet words, and the lion stopped and laid down. Well, the crowd was enraged that they weren't going to get the show that they'd expected.

At the very outset of this morning’s conversation I mentioned that the purpose of this effort the Commission on Political Reform was to really start to think about the interactions between leadership and citizenship, not to simply focus inside the beltway or outside the beltway but recognize that we have a large and diverse country with leaders of all types that have to be part of the solutions we’re interested in finding. And this last panel really starts to bridge that discussion. We are now going to spend some time thinking about the incentives and obstacles to public service. We have before us a terrific panel of elected leaders, former White House officials and some real innovators in the non-profit space who have created opportunities for people to lead and contribute. The panel, led by our very own John Fortier who directs the Democracy Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center, John is a political scientist with expertise in government institutions and particular electoral reform. He is widely published and has really been the brain trust behind the boiler room of the Commission on Political Reform as we move forward through the process a lot of the efforts that you see will be driven by John and his team.     Watching & Waiting: “Dallas” in 2012 Ryan R. Sanderson “Bullets don’t seem to have much of an effect on me darlin’,” the old man calmly mutters. Of course we the audience know just what he means. No matter how old he might be—in character and in years—it’s a pleasure to be able to say: J.R. Ewing is back! And he still has it. There’s nothing like sitting down in front of a television here in 2012 to watch a new program that quickly proves not-so-new upon hearing that grand, wonderful, unmistakable theme music. It’s almost like a trip back in time—almost perhaps, though not. The nostalgia factor is obvious, at least to those of us who know the characters and all that’s happened with them and to them over the past 30+ years. To see most of them alive and relatively well satisfies our initial curiosity. After all, we’re tuning in to get reacquainted with our all-time favorites and be caught up on where they’ve been and just where their lives have come. We—that is the aforementioned “those of us” with sharp memories who know what’s going on—are the reason for the “return” of the world-famous show. Ultimately, we’re the ones who must be satisfied in order for the program to be a success. This said, I ask: Why am I largely disappointed thus far in the new “Dallas”? It’s not all bad; some strong moments are beginning to come through.
