  • River Health in the Mid North the Map Provides an Overall Assessment of the Health of Individual Sites in the Region
    Mayfly nymph (Koorrnonga inconspicua) Aquatic macroinvertebrates in the Mid North The region is biologically diverse, with over 380 types of aquatic macroinvertebrates having been collected from 1994–1999. The most common members include amphipod crustaceans (e.g. Pseudomoera species and Austrochiltonia australis), blackfly larvae (Simulium ornatipes), oligochaetes (worms), chironomid midge larvae (Chironomus species), molluscs (hydrobiid snails) and nematodes (roundworms). A number of rare and uncommon macroinvertebrates are also found in the region. They include bristle worms (polychaete worms from the family Syllidae) found in the main channel of the Broughton River, as well as from the lower Rocky River and Mary Springs. These worms are normally found in marine and estuarine environments and their widespread presence in the Broughton catchment was unexpected. Other interesting records include horsehair worms (Gordiidae) from Skillogallee Creek, and planorbid snails (Gyraulus species) from the Light River at Mingays Waterhole. There are also three rare blackfly larvae that occur in the region: Austrosimulium furiosum from the Broughton River, Simulium melatum from Mary Springs and Paracnephia species from Belalie Creek. Among the rarer midges in the area are Podonomopsis from Eyre Creek, Apsectrotanypus from the Light River at Kapunda and Harrissius from the Wakefield River. Mayflies such as Offadens sp. 5 and Centroptilum elongatum, from the Broughton River and Mary Springs respectively, were unusual records, as were the presence of several caddisflies (e.g. Apsilochorema gisbum, Taschorema evansi, Orphninotrichia maculata and Lingora aurata) from Skillogallee and Eyre creeks, Mary Springs and the lower Broughton River. Mayfly nymphs (e.g. Koorrnonga inconspicua) have flattened bodies that allow them to cling to rocks in flowing streams.

During the past nine years RDAYMN has worked alongside a number of Councils, businesses, community and not-for- profit groups to increase economic activity and competitiveness and to enhance social and environmental outcomes for our region. Importantly our Board is a draw from civic leaders across the Yorke and Mid North region and includes representatives from local government (two elected members and two CEO’s), business representatives including Balco, Pringles Crouch, Nyrstar, Rosewarnes and Bowmans Rail. Collectively they drive the direction and civic leadership across the region on a largely volunteer basis and are pivotal to our success.     Water quality Information Sheet Aquatic ecosystem condition reports 2013 panel assessment of creeks and rivers from the Kangaroo Island and Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM regions Issued July 2014 EPA 1048/14: This information sheet describes the outcome of the panel assessment of creeks and rivers from the Kangaroo Island and Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management (NRM) regions, sampled during autumn and spring 2013. Introduction The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) coordinates a monitoring, evaluation and reporting (MER) program on the aquatic ecosystem condition of South Australian creeks and rivers. This MER program is designed to meet several objectives: • Providing a statewide monitoring framework for creeks and rivers that revolves through the NRM regions with sufficient frequency to allow for state of the rnvironment reporting purposes. • Describing aquatic ecosystem condition for broad general public understanding. • Identifying the key pressures and management responses to those pressures. • Providing a useful reporting format that can support environmental decision making within government, community and industry. This information sheet provides a summary of the scientific work used in assessing monitoring data from creeks and rivers. Aquatic ecosystem science is not always rigid and precise; it is often open to different interpretations in several respects. Therefore, the EPA has decided that the best way to assess the condition of streams is through an expert panel deliberation that uses a consistent descriptive modelling approach. The panel members comprised an environmental consultant and two biologists from the EPA (the authors of this assessment). All have at least 15 years’ experience in monitoring and assessing a range of streams across South Australia.
