ALL-INDIA WRITERS' MEET 24-25 March 2018, Kohima, Nagaland In collaboration with Nagaland University, a two-day All-India Writers' Meet was organized on 24-25 March 2018 at Kohima, Nagaland. For the first time the Akademi organized a national-level programme at Nagaland. The very objective of this mega event was a challenge to bring reputed writers from various languages and from different parts of the country to Nagaland and usher in a new environment for the Naga writers. This was an opportunity to bring together different languages of the country with the languages of Nagaland. Dr K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, while welcoming the delegates, encouraged the native writers to bring out the beautiful Naga cultural and literary traditions so as to make them known to others. Dr D. Kuolie, General Council Member, Sahitya Akademi, asserted that the idea of organizing this event was a constructive endeavour, an attempt to bring the writers of the country together. Professor Temsula Ao, eminent English writer, delivered the keynote address and observed that the Nagas have a rich oral tradition, but modern generation has lost many knowledgeable story-tellers and folk-singers, which she considered as the greatest casualties of progress and development of the society. She encouraged and appreciated the younger generation to create a new tradition where the soul of oral tradition resonates with new vigour. Prof. Temsula Ao delivering the keynote address Dr Madhav Kaushik speaking during the event Professor Ramesh C. Gupta, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, gave a brief historical account on the institutionalization of Sahitya Akademi and highlighted the aspiration of the pioneers.

Cosmopolitan Encounters: Sanskrit and Persian at the Mughal Court Audrey Truschke Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Audrey Truschke All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cosmopolitan Encounters: Sanskrit and Persian at the Mughal Court Audrey Truschke In this dissertation, I analyze interactions between Sanskrit and Persian literary cultures at the Mughal court during the years 1570-1650 C.E. During this period, the Mughals rose to prominence as one of the most powerful dynasties of the early modern world and patronized Persian as a language of both literature and empire. Simultaneously, the imperial court supported Sanskrit textual production, participated in Sanskrit cultural life, and produced Persian translations of Sanskrit literature. For their part, Sanskrit intellectuals became influential members of the Mughal court, developed a linguistic interest in Persian, and wrote extensively about their imperial experiences. Yet the role of Sanskrit at the Mughal court remains a largely untold story in modern scholarship, as do the resulting engagements across cultural lines. To the extent that scholars have thought about Sanskrit and Persian in tandem, they have generally been blinded by their own language barriers and mistakenly asserted that there was no serious interaction between the two. I challenge this uncritical view through a systematic reading of texts in both languages and provide the first detailed account of exchanges between these traditions at the Mughal court. I further argue that these cross- cultural events are central to understanding the construction of power in the Mughal Empire and the cultural and literary dynamics of early modern India.

Prajapati Associate Professor, Department of English, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat. ABSTRACT This paper attempts to examine the possibilities of writing the history of translation along with its growth in future in Gujarāt. Gujarāt does not record a long history of translation in the deep past because Gujarātī is not considered so old language as Sanskrit is. The term ‘Gujarāt’ had emerged by the tenth century, but the word “Gujarātī” was believed to be first used by Premānand in the later half of the 17th century. The stabilization of the British in Gujarāt by 1818 has flourished translations from Gujarātī into English and vice versa confirming two phases in the history of translation: The Madhya Yuga and The Arvāchin Yuga. Though the knowledge of English speeded up translations in Gujarāt, compared to other states Dr. Amit R. Prajapati of India, Gujarāt has delivered very slow. Slowly but gradually the growth is Article Info: registered, though much remains to be done. The history of translation, inviting Article Received:20/11/2014 team efforts, requires the primary work of data collection of translations in oral and Revised on: 04/12/2014 written.
