An Abstract of “To Excite the Feelings of Noble Patriots:” Emotion, Public Gatherings, and Mackenzie’s American Rebellion, 1837-1842 by Joshua M. Steedman Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in History The University of Toledo August 2019 This dissertation is a cultural history of the American reaction to the Upper Canadian Rebellion and the Patriot War. This project is based on an analysis of newspaper articles published by William Lyon Mackenzie and his contemporaries, diplomatic cables between Washington D.C. and London, letters, and accounts of celebrations, toasts, and public meetings which occurred between 1837 and 1842. I argue Americans and Upper Canadians in the Great Lakes region made up a culture area. By re-engaging in a battle with the British, Upper Canadians, and their American supporters sought redemption. Reacting to geographic isolation from major metropolitan areas and a looming psychic crisis motivated many of these individuals to act. -

Carolyn Podruchny, "Festivities, Fortitude, and Fraternalism: Fur Trade Masculinity and the Beaver Club, 1785-1827." In New Faces in the Fur Trade: Selected Papers of the Seventh North American Fur Trade Conference, edited by William C. Wicken, Jo-Anne Fiske and Susan Sleeper-Smith, 31-52. East Lansing, Michigan: Michigan State University Press, 1998. In 1785, wealthy fur trade merchants in Montreal founded the Beaver Club, an elite dining club restricted to men who had wintered in the North American interior, often referred to as "Indian Country." Although the Beaver Club existed along side other dining and entertainment clubs in Montreal, it was unique in its membership, raison d'être, and rituals. The club was initiated to provide a forum for retired merchants in which to reminisce about the risky and adventurous days of fur trading, and a forum for young fur traders to enter Montreal's bourgeois society.i The initial membership of nineteen expanded to a peak of fifty-five, as the club met regularly until 1804. Following a three-year suspension dinners were then resumed. It probably began to decline after the merger between the North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company in 1821, when the business centre of the fur trade moved from Montreal to Hudson Bay. Evidence shows that members continued to meet until 1824, when the Club ended. Efforts to resurrect the Club in 1827 were unsuccessful. The Beaver Club a well-known institution of the Montreal fur trade. Many scholars have glorified the exclusive fraternity and the extravagant style of the dinners, and idealized the strength of the men who wintered in "Indian Country". -
A New Chapter Creating Connections Between Words, Hearts, and the Community
SUMMER 2016 A New Chapter Creating connections between words, hearts, and the community Inside: Special Graduation Section – Celebrating the Class of 2016 S t. Mary’s girls love words. From the moment you walk in the doors of the school, girls of all ages are embracing words. They love to use them correctly, to play with them, and to learn new ones. I discovered this logophilia – the love of words, and word games – quickly when I first joined the St. Mary’s community in 2004. Their care for words extended from a note by a candy bowl to exquisitely written college essays. The success of Student Council campaigns seems to depend on the apt turn of phrase on the banners. And where else but at St. Mary’s does the Middle School Halloween costume winner owe her victory to creating the best visual pun? One English teacher stated this affection more boldly, “Our students leave St. Mary’s as the defenders of the English Language.” At the heart of academic success is learning to read. At St. Mary’s, we delight in teaching students of all ages the art of engaged reading. In the stories that follow, you will see how St. Mary’s is continuing its strong tradition in developing learners and creating more opportunities for our girls and for children across Memphis to discover their love of words. The Nathaniel C. Hughes Learning Center is our most recent accomplishment in fostering life-long learning. It is only fitting that Dr. Hughes’ name is honored through this center; an esteemed scholar and former headmaster, he raised St. -
