Low Energy Ground Cooling System for Buildings in Hot and Humid Malaysia by Aliyah Nur Zafirah Sanusi B.Sc., B.Arch., M.Phil. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University June 2012 This thesis is sponsored by International Islamic University Malaysia and De Montfort University ABSTRACT This thesis presents an investigation into the viability of Low Energy Earth Pipe Cooling Technology in providing thermal comfort in Malaysia. The demand for air- conditioning in buildings in Malaysia affects the country escalating energy consumption. Therefore, this investigation was intended to seek for a passive cooling alternative to air-conditioning. By reducing the air-conditioning demand, there would be a higher chance of Malaysia government to achieve their aim in reducing CO2 emissions to 40 per cent by the year 2020, compared to 2005 levels. The passive technology, where the ground was used as a heat sink to produce cooler air, has not been investigated systematically in hot and humid countries. In this work, air and soil temperatures were measured on a test site in Kuala Lumpur. At 1m underground, the result is most significant, where the soil temperature are 6oC and 9oC lower than the maximum ambient temperature during wet and dry season, respectively. Polyethylene pipes were buried around 0.5m, 1.0m and 1.5m underground and temperature drop between inlet and outlet were compared. A significant temperature drop was found in these pipes: up to 6.4oC and 6.9oC depending on the season of the year. The results have shown the potential of Earth Pipe in providing low energy cooling in Malaysia. -

Pemikiran cemerlang dari para arsitek abad ini dalam menyikapi permasalahan permukiman, terutama terkait dengan keterbatasan pemanfaatan lahan, mengundang pro dan kontra di masyarakat. Beranjak dari hal tersebut, pada ulasan ini yang merupakan apresiasi terhadap karya arsitektur, mengangkat arsitektur bioklimatik oleh Ken Yeang. Ken Yeang berusaha memecahkan sebagian permasalahan permukiman yang sedang dihadapi saat ini, khususnya di sejumlah kota besar. Melalui penjajaran antara bangunan modern, dalam hal ini arsitektur bioklimatik, dengan bangunan tradisional di Asia Tenggara secara umum, terutama dari segi ruang, pencahayaan, penghawaan, lansekap, bentuk dan elemen bangunan, serta konsep perancangan. Ulasan ini ingin mengetengahkan paradigma baru di balik tampilan karya arsitektur spektakuler Ken Yeang pada Mesiniaga Tower di Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, sehingga akan dapat membuka cakrawala baru dalam berarsitektur di Indonesia. Kata kunci : arsitektur bioklimatik, bangunan pencakar langit, iklim tropis, hemat energi. ABSTRACT In this moment, the inovations of architecture designing are already grown at full speed. The brilliance ideas of architects to solve settlement problems, especially they have relation with shortage of land use, come people dilemas up. This paper describes a appreciation of architecture, bioclimatic architecture concept by Ken Yeang. He try to solve some of settlement problems in this time, especially in urban areas. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES The principal activity of the Company is investment holding. The principal activities of the subsidiary companies consist of the following :- (i) Kiln drying and chemical preservative treatment; (iv) Manufacturing and distribution of industrial paper bags; (ii) Manufacturing, exporting and dealing in moulded (v) Trading in log supply and its related products; timber and its related products; (vi) Exploitation of timber concessions; and (iii) Export of processed timber products; (vii) The operation of a fully integrated timber complex. There have been no significant changes in the nature of these activities during the year. FINANCIAL RESULTS GROUP COMPANY RM’000 RM’000 Loss after taxation (31,809) (33,048) Minority interest (1,860) - Net loss for the year (33,669) (33,048) There were no material transfers to or from reserves or provisions during the financial year other than as disclosed in the statements of changes in equity. In the opinion of the Directors, the results of the operations of the Group and of the Company during the financial year have not been substantially affected by any item, transaction, or event of a material and unusual nature. DIVIDEND No dividend has been paid or declared by the Company since the end of the previous financial year and the Directors do not propose any dividend in respect of the current financial year. -

FORUM Disaster Preparedness Month DISASTER RISK REDUCTION ADVISORY BOARD reported by Ir. Kim Kek Seong n evening talk on Disaster Preparedness Month was Aheld in conjunction with the National Preparedness Month (Bulan Kesiapsiagaan Nasional, BKN). The talk on 31 October, 2017 was by Ir. Loo Chee Kin, Chairman of DRRAB and supported by committee member Encik Azahari bin Rejab; the special invited speaker was Encik Ahmad Fairuz bin Mohd Yusoff, Principal Assistant Secretary of Selangor’s Disaster Management Unit (DMU). About 50 IEM members as well as several non-engineers attended the talk. En. Ahmad started the evening talk by presenting the role of the DMU and the assets that Selangor has for disaster management and mitigation. He also shared several drone videos. The use of drones has helped the DMU and the other government agencies in disaster investigation, planning, response and management. As part of the Smart Selangor programme, DMU has several monitoring terminals Figure 1: Draft Seismic Map for Peninsular Malaysia in Plaza Perangsang to monitor 38 weather, rivers, air pollution, etc. Ir. Loo presented several engineering updates on the Kelantan Big Flood (2014), Flood Forecasting, Earthquake and Hillslope Risk Mapping. In the 2016 paper by Nor Eliza Alias, et al., the 2014 flood in Kelantan was caused by two phases of heavy rainfall. From 15 to 19 December, the daily rainfall was 300 mm and this increased to 500 mm APRIL 2018 ● from 20 to 24 December. The rainfall during these periods was with Annual Recurrence Interval (ARI) of more than 500 years and broke a few past JURUTERA Group picture of the speakers and some of the audience records.
