Prof. Dr. Barış ÇAKMUR June 2021, 166 pages Hip-hop has become one of the omnipresent and popular form of cultures in the present-day, which spreads across the world and the most known elements of this culture has always been rap music. This music becomes a way of expression to raise a voice against the social problems throughout its history. This study examines how the resistance in Turkish rap music has transformed within the grip of popular culture. In this context, the formation of Turkish rap music will be discussed and analyzed through the analysis of in-depth interviews. Before the analysis of the interviews, this thesis firstly attempts to focus on the history of hip-hop culture and rap music along with the link between the resistance and rap music. Then, it aims to discuss journey of rap music from Germany to Turkey. Finally, the study aims to reveal the different aspects of resistance in Turkish rap music by referring to the individual and social components of this music. This thesis also argues that resistance in Turkish rap music is ambiguous in terms of how it expresses itself. Bu çalışma Türkçe rap müzikteki direnişin popüler kültür içerisinde nasıl dönüştüğünü incelemektedir. Bu bağlamda Türkçe rap müziğinin oluşumu derinlemesine görüşmeler yoluyla tartışılacak ve analiz edilecektir. Röportajların analizinden önce, bu tez öncelikle hip-hop kültürü ve rap müziğinin tarihine, direniş ve rap müzik arasındaki bağlantıya odaklanmaya çalışacaktır. Ardından, rap müziğin Almanya'dan Türkiye'ye geçiş sürecindeki yolculuğunu tartışmayı hedeflemektedir. Son olarak, bu çalışma Türkçe rap müzikteki direnişin farklı boyutlarını bu müziğin bireysel ve toplumsal bileşenlerine atıfta bulunarak ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Ayrıca, bu tez Türkçe rap müzikteki direnişin kendini nasıl ifade ettiği açısından belirsiz olduğunu iddia etmektedir.     HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

    Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 122–135 Research Article Adam de Paor-Evans* The Futurism of Hip Hop: Space, Electro and Science Fiction in Rap https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0012 Received January 27, 2018; accepted June 2, 2018 Abstract: In the early 1980s, an important facet of hip hop culture developed a style of music known as electro-rap, much of which carries narratives linked to science fiction, fantasy and references to arcade games and comic books. The aim of this article is to build a critical inquiry into the cultural and socio- political presence of these ideas as drivers for the productions of electro-rap, and subsequently through artists from Newcleus to Strange U seeks to interrogate the value of science fiction from the 1980s to the 2000s, evaluating the validity of science fiction’s place in the future of hip hop. Theoretically underpinned by the emerging theories associated with Afrofuturism and Paul Virilio’s dromosphere and picnolepsy concepts, the article reconsiders time and spatial context as a palimpsest whereby the saturation of digitalisation becomes both accelerator and obstacle and proposes a thirdspace-dromology. In conclusion, the article repositions contemporary hip hop and unearths the realities of science fiction and closes by offering specific directions for both the future within and the future of hip hop culture and its potential impact on future society. This approach, which has continued the feature of Yeşilçam cinema with songs; It is seen that by making use of visual and auditory elements, it plays an active role in the transfer of the historical, cultural and musical effects of the period. In the study, it was aimed to examine examples of Turkish cinema with arabesque music content from various aspects, based on the "Ferdi Tayfur" sample. In the research, using literature review, content analysis and historical research models, Ferdi Tayfur, one of the popular arabesque singers of the period, has been examined by subjecting to the evaluation scale prepared for the subject, 27 films and the songs in it, which were shown on the big screen between 1976 and 1986. If we talk about some of the results obtained, Ferdi Tayfur took part as the leading actor in twenty-seven films between 1976-1986 and he voiced approximately ninety-seven works among these films; It is stated that Ferdi Tayfur's works are in arabesque song form and have modal structure features, an average of five works were included in the film, and he performed all of the works featured.

Eko hier, Echo-Nominierung da, der junge Mann aus Mönchengladbach, der in einer Hochhaussiedlung bei seiner alleinerziehenden Mutter aufgewachsen war, feilte an seiner Karriere und wurde als talentierter Songschreiber unter anderem für Yvonne Catterfeld entdeckt. Eko Fresh ist eine Hitmaschine mit einem unglaublichen Output. Neun Soloalben, unzählige Features und zahlreiche Mixtapes pflastern seinen Weg. Er war beteiligt an unzähligen Hit-Alben deutschsprachiger Rapper, die bei der Textarbeit gerne und oft auf seine Fähigkeiten zurück griffen. Als begnadeter Entertainer und Live-MC überzeugte er seit seinen Anfangstagen das Publikum und schließlich wurde er auch noch als Schauspieler entdeckt, der vor der Kamera in seiner Rolle als Mesut Yildiz im Kinofilm „3 Türken und ein Baby“ überzeugte.

    FROM GHETTO TO GOETHE: GERMAN RAPPERS OF COLOR CLAIMING THEIR SPACE IN THE NATION By Krsna Santos A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of German Studies — Master of Arts 2016 ABSTRACT FROM GHETTO TO GOETHE: GERMAN RAPPERS OF COLOR CLAIMING THEIR SPACE IN THE NATION By Krsna Santos This thesis examines how contemporary German rappers of color offer decolonial critiques of definitions of nation, the cultural canon and German identity. Finding the traditional definitions insufficient for their multiracial, multiethnic and multinational identities, they propose more inclusive definitions of nation, canon and Germanness. Despite being marginalized, these rappers claim aspects of a Germany that resists them, and carve out a place in the national narrative. This movement from marginalization to speaking for the nation is the unique turn the subaltern in German hip-hop makes. The study analyzes songs, music videos and interviews with Samy Deluxe, Eko Fresh and Blumio to show how they use three distinct strategies — contesting constructions of canon and national identity through verse, practicing decolonial and sarcastic love and mapping hyperlocality — to accomplish the aims of critiquing and offering new definitions. With these strategies the rappers demonstrate that hip-hop not only is a poetic force that gives voice to Germans of color, but also has a place as an art form in canonical German culture. Hip-hop in Germany does the singular work of giving voice to Germans of color and elevates these voices to places of cultural authority.
