  • A Genealogical Handbook of German Research
Family History Library • 35 North West Temple Street • Salt Lake City, UT 84150-3400 USA A GENEALOGICAL HANDBOOK OF GERMAN RESEARCH REVISED EDITION 1980 By Larry O. Jensen P.O. Box 441 PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH 84062 Copyright © 1996, by Larry O. Jensen All rights reserved. No part of this work may be translated or reproduced in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical, including photocopying, without permission in writing from the author. Printed in the U.S.A. INTRODUCTION There are many different aspects of German research that could and maybe should be covered; but it is not the intention of this book even to try to cover the majority of these. Too often when genealogical texts are written on German research, the tendency has been to generalize. Because of the historical, political, and environmental background of this country, that is one thing that should not be done. In Germany the records vary as far as types, time period, contents, and use from one kingdom to the next and even between areas within the same kingdom. In addition to the variation in record types there are also research problems concerning the use of different calendars and naming practices that also vary from area to area. Before one can successfully begin doing research in Germany there are certain things that he must know. There are certain references, problems and procedures that will affect how one does research regardless of the area in Germany where he intends to do research. The purpose of this book is to set forth those things that a person must know and do to succeed in his Germanic research, whether he is just beginning or whether he is advanced.

  • Political Imagination in German Romanticism John Thomas Gill
Wild Politics : Political Imagination in German Romanticism John Thomas Gill A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Gabriel Trop Eric Downing Stefani Engelstein Jakob Norberg Aleksandra Prica i © 2020 John Thomas Gill ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT John Gill: Wild Politics : Political Imagination in German Romanticism (Under the direction of Gabriel Trop) The political discourse of German Romanticism is often interpreted reductively: as either entirely revolutionary, reactionary, or indeed apolitical in nature. Breaking with this critical tradition, this dissertation offers a new conceptual framework for political Romanticism called wild politics . I argue that Romantic wild politics generates a sense of possibility that calls into question pragmatic forms of implementing sociopolitical change; it envisions imaginative alternatives to the status quo that exceed the purview of conventional political thinking. Three major fields of the Romantic political imaginary organize this reading: affect, nature, and religion. Chapter 1 examines Novalis’ politics of affect. In his theory of the fairy tale—as opposed to the actual fairy tales he writes—Novalis proposes a political paradigm centered on the aesthetic dimension of love. He imagines a new Prussian state constituted by emotional attachments between the citizen and the monarch. Chapter 2 takes up the “new mythology” in the works of F.W.J. Schelling, Friedrich Schlegel, and Johann Wilhelm Ritter, the comprehensive project of reorienting modern life towards its most transformative potentials.

  • Regiment of the Saxon Duchies – Chapter One
The Napoleon Series The Germans under the French Eagles: Volume IV The Regiment of the Saxon Duchies – Chapter One By Commandant Sauzey Translated by Greg Gorsuch THE REGIMENT OF THE SAXON DUCHIES ================================================================================== FIRST CHAPTER THE CAMPAIGN OF JENA AND THE SAXON DUCHIES (1806) _______________ I. -- The Duchy of Weimar furnishes to the Prussians a contingent to fight at Auerstaedt, and accompanies Blücher in his retreat on Lübeck. We are in the autumn of the year 1806: the Prussian monarchy, carried away by a wind of military folly, shortly before the catastrophes to follow; its army, placed on the a war footing, approached Saxony: in spite of its desire to remain neutral, the Elector was obliged to yield to the pressure of events; the Prussians were very close, and the Emperor Napoleon was still far away... The Saxon Electorate troops are thus incorporated into the Prussian ranks. But all the Allies were good for the war which was about to begin: a convention of the 4th of October, 1806, signed by the Colonel and Quartermaster General von Guyonneau on the side of the Prussia, and on the side of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar by the Chamberlain and Major von Pappenheim, put at the service of Prussia for a period of twelve months a battalion of jäger and 40 hussars of Saxe-Weimar: these troops, together with those of the Electorate of Saxony, were to fight against the Emperor Napoleon and his allies of the Confederation of the Rhine. It was the establishment of this "Confederation

  • Male Students and Female Apprentices in the Lying-In Hospital of Go¨Ttingen University, 1792–1815
Medical History, 2007, 51: 3–36 The Practice of Practical Education: Male Students and Female Apprentices in the Lying-in Hospital of Go¨ttingen University, 1792–1815 JU¨ RGEN SCHLUMBOHM* It is generally agreed that, in most European countries, practical education became increasingly important for future physicians and surgeons during the course of the eight- eenth century. Recent studies have shown that, around 1800, clinical teaching took place in a variety of contexts: hospitals with inpatients, polyclinics or outpatient dispensaries, consultation hours for poor people, private tutoring by, or a kind of apprenticeship with, an experienced practitioner.1 While these organizational forms have become fairly clear in several countries, much less is known about what ‘‘practical’’ training actually meant. Did it mainly consist of ‘‘studying written case histories’’,2 or following ‘‘clinical lectures’’ in the classroom where the teacher brought in patients and explained their diseases? Did students attend the hospital rounds of professors and hospital physicians, or did they ‘‘walk the wards’’ on their own? To what extent were medical students allowed to question patients, and physically examine them? Were they given responsibility for patients under the supervision of a professor or an experienced physician? If so, how many patients did they examine or treat during their education? It is true that we know the regulations of some medical schools at specific points in time, but we have much less knowledge about how these rules were implemented. The few surviving memoirs, diaries and travel accounts make clear that there may have been a considerable gap between norms and practice.

Republican Bayonets on the Rhine – Scenario Designer Notes Introduction Republican Bayonets on the Rhine (hereafter RBR) covers the battles from the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1792 to their final conclusion on the fields of Hohenlinden in 1800. More than just a companion game to Campaign Marengo it defines the era more precisely with the evolution of the French army of the “levee en masse,” First and Second Amalgamations, to the professional army it had become by the end of the War of the Second Coalition. The project goes back to 2008 when initial production on the battles of Hohenlinden, First and Second Zürich, Würzburg and Bergen took place. With an array of artwork that dwarfs that of Campaign Marengo by a factor of almost 5:1 the entire range of European armies that fought in the major battles of this time period. Organization The five major subdivisions which are included in RBR includes the early campaigns (one entity), the Rhine Campaign of 1796 (Charles vs. Moreau and Jourdan), the Rhine Campaign of 1799 (Charles vs. Jourdan and Masséna), the Noord-Holland Campaign of 1799 (Brune vs. York) and the Rhine Campaign of 1800. A large list of military units was compiled that participated in the campaigns. More than two hundred and forty images represent the military units that fought in the battles covered in the product. The team went with the concept that better scenarios and fewer variants would lead to a more enjoyable experience for the players. Thus many of the variants were playtested as much as the historical scenarios.
