Thanks to a hugely successful inaugural festival in 2015, the GSLF is back and we couldn’t be more excited.

Before I dive into our Festival, let me tell you a little bit about the history of Fringe MUSIC Festivals in general. After World War II, Europe was in desperate need of cultural enrichment, so British officials and artists founded the (fairly exclusive) Edinburgh September International Festival of Music and Drama. Eight theatre groups came to Sept. 17: Homecoming Concert Edinburgh uninvited, and instead of performing in the festival, ended up Sept. 26: Westminster Concert Series performing on the outskirts, or the fringe. Thus the first Fringe Festival was born. Today, almost 70 years later, there are more than 200 Fringe Festivals spanning October six continents. Oct. 24: Concert Series One of the most incredible parts of this massive community of Fringes is the November support system that has been created to build and strengthen festivals Nov. 19: Sonata Competition worldwide. As a fledgling fringe, we are incredibly grateful to our mentor Fringe Nov. 21 Sonata: Competition Winner Recital festivals close by, such as the San Diego International Fringe Festival, as well as some festivals a bit farther away, from places like Stockholm, Johannesburg and December Calgary, who have been so willing to help a fellow Fringe succeed. Dec. 3: SugarTown Concert Dec. 4: Chamber Players Concert Founded in 2015 by a group of Westminster College students, faculty, and alumni, the Great Salt Lake Fringe prioritizes our artists above all else. We Dec. 9–10: Westminster Holiday Concert: Messiah provide an uncensored and unjuried opportunity for artists to share their work Dec. 13: Jazz Ensemble Concert while making it affordable for everyone involved. Our venues are available to Dec. 14: Chamber Orchestra Concert artists for less than half of what they’d pay to rent other local spaces, and therefore we are able to cut ticket prices in half too! The best part? The artists receive 100% of ticket sales.

THEATRE This year, 49 companies will present 52 shows over eight days, totaling nearly 250 performances. However, the magic of a Fringe comes when you, the Herakles audience, see several beautiful performances and revel in their variety. We September 2–3 & 9–10 encourage you to take advantage of all of the artists we’ve gathered from across the country, supporting the arts and their hard work. 7:30 pm This is where you’re typically invited to “sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.” But Bellwether I invite you—no, I challenge you to get up, engage and immerse yourself in the October 13–15 & 27–29 second annual Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival! 7:30 pm Emilio Casillas Two Gentlemen of Verona Festival Director November 10–12 & 17–19

In addition to the performing arts, the Visual Fringe presents programming that features local visual artists of every medium, uncensored and unjuried. Visual Fringe Gallery Come visit our two main lobbies, at Westminster College and the Fringe Factory, to enjoy a variety of different works by local artists. For more information and to purchase pieces, please visit greatsaltlakefringe.org/ visual-art. Don’t just see art. Be Art. Back for a second year, Bruce Aoki will again provide a photographic experienced described as “exhilirating” by the men and women who participated. Take a dare and take it off. Bruce will use his Hasselblad to create something new in black and white, using a different concept and lighting. Even if you were a subject last year, come back for another incredible photo. Visit greatsaltlakefringe.org/visual-art to schedule a sitting. Bruce Aoki When was the last time you had a photographic portrait taken? Not a selfie, and not a snapshot for your social media page, but a professional, studio portrait. Probably in high school for the yearbook? We invite you to be the subject of Bruce’s tastefully artful body images that capture the moment and reveal personality and character that makes you feel incredibly special! And it will last forever. SPECIAL Event: OPERAS FROM THE HIVE The Visual Fringe and Utah Opera will be presenting an encore showing of Operas from the Hive during the Opening Night Party on Friday, July 29. With libretti based on stories told at The Bee’s local storytelling competitions, these multi-media operas are the product of a collaboration between Utah opera artists, storytellers, musicians, animators, & more.
