  • A European Perspective on Nordic Prison Systems and Prison Education, by Kevin Warner, Co-Ordinator of Prison Education, Ireland
A European Perspective on Nordic prison systems and prison education, by Kevin Warner, Co-ordinator of Prison Education, Ireland. Address to the Nordic conference on prison education, Tromso, Norway, 22-25 May 2008. An adult education approach. In the first part of this talk this morning, I wish to focus on two themes, which, as you will see, tend to blend together: firstly, the idea of adult education; and, secondly, how we see prisons and prisoners. Then, later, I want to offer some impressions of penal policy in Nordic countries. But I begin with some poems written by prisoners in Ireland, from an anthology called Another Place (1). The first is by Robert Hendrick, who describes life in a shared cell in Cork Prison: Home for the Time Being I look around the cell, what do I see? Two pisspots in the corner, on the locker a T.V. On the wall is a shelf, with tapes and C.Ds. On the others there’s posters of Bob Marley And naked ladies. There’s a button too, we use as a bell. Oh! I almost forgot, there’s a stereo as well. There’s plastic cutlery, a bowl and a jug for our tea, Two chairs to sit on while we watch telly. We watch the box without a word. It’s only seven inches; sounds absurd. We watch the Premiership on a Saturday night, We watch films, a comedy or two, They cheer us up when we’re feeling blue. Our greatest fear as we sit in our chairs Is when that bloody line it just appears.

Commitments 10 Feb 2010 – Feb 2013 1 2 Baltic Sea Action Group BSAS PROCESS COMMITMENTS Helsinki 2010 – St. Petersburg 2013 3/12/2013 Dear friend of the Baltic Sea, Using medical terminology, the Baltic Sea shows five severe symptoms. First, the sea is obese, second, it suffers from oxygen deficiency and third, our patient shows risk prone traffic behavior. Furthermore, its bladder leaks and it uses drugs. The obesity diagnosis refers to eutrophication caused by nutrient draining from agriculture and inadequately treated wastewater. The oxygen deficiency, which is acute in the dead anoxic sea bottom areas, is the result of decades of nutrient overload and internal eutrophication processes. Increasing marine traffic poses a high risk of collisions, the most dangerous of which are potential oil and chemical spills. The leaking bladder refers to the run-off of untreated waters from urban areas. The hazardous substances problems equal intoxication. This analogy clearly illustrates the different symptoms for anyone, but it also offers a temptation to treat them separately. However, like in medicine, a holistic approach should be applied, taking into account the intertwined relationship of the symptoms. As for all life processes, the cure should involve all aspects of living and working in and on the shores of the Baltic Sea area. Only this approach leads to sustainable solutions and the diagnosis of “the patient will survive”. Most importantly, in the case of this particular patient, this means that our grandchildren will have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea Action Group has been addressing all the symptoms on different levels since its foundation in 2008.

The current issue and full text archive of this journal is available at www.emeraldinsight.com/1471-5201.htm JRME 13,1 Entrepreneurial passion: an explorative case study of four metal music ventures 18 Laura Laaksonen Aalto University School of Economics, Aalto, Finland Antti Ainamo University of Turku, Turku, Finland, and Toni-Matti Karjalainen Aalto University School of Economics, Aalto, Finland Abstract Purpose – Entrepreneurial passion has recently begun to fascinate a growing number of researchers. While only a few systematic studies exist, Cardon et al.’s review suggests passion as a prevalent phenomenon among entrepreneurs. They make a call for empirical and systematic studies of entrepreneurial passion to provide insights for practice and research. This paper aims to apply the recent theoretical advances in a particular empirical setting: the heavy metal genre in the popular music industry. Design/methodology/approach – Using a qualitative in-depth case study approach, four ventures that are considered new ventures in the metal music business are studied. Findings – The findings strongly imply that the grounds for a globally successful creative venture require the passion of at least one inventor entrepreneur. Also, at least one founder is needed to take the venture to the next stage, where business is formalized for ramp up and at least one developer is needed to grow the business after the other two identities and earlier stages of the venture life cycle have created the platform on which to build and develop the business. The paper also finds that these role identity-related behaviors are essential characteristics for artists in the popular music industry.
