EPCA STRATEGY AND MISSION 9 2. REPORT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS EPCA ANNUAL REPORT 2014 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Dear Reader, Throughout the year 2014, we witnessed how much and how fast the development of shale gas has continued to transform the competitiveness of the US economy and the US chemical industry. We also faced a dramatic drop in the prices of oil and gas, caused by lower than expected growth in world demand for these commodities, combined with the continued boom in shale hydrocarbon production in the United States. This situation culminated in the November 2014 decision of certain OPEC countries to go for market share instead of trying to halt the decline in oil prices through a cut-back in production.
