Mthokozisi Shezi’s return to Durban on a permanent basis, having re-joined the Dolphins on a loan from the during the second half of the 2016/17 season, is a pleasing one while exciting talents Sibonelo Makhanya, Sarel Erwee and Tshepang Dithole have all earned Franchise contracts for the first time. Major Benefits to be Reaped from Sanlam CT Marathon

While the road running and general sporting fraternity stand to benefit greatly from the 2016 Sanlam Cape Town Mar- athon, local communities and sectors of society are again also expected to receive major boosts through the success of the annual event. As the only standard marathon race in Africa to be awarded IAAF Silver Label status, organisers, partners and stakeholders will again use the annual Spring weekend road running festival to make a difference beyond the world of sport. Figures from last year's event offer an indication of its lengthy reach, as race organisers work to- wards long-term goals in an effort to bridge the gap between the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and the world's most popular road races:

Participatory numbers have climbed by over 35% year-on-year. Runners represented 51 different countries, with 4.5% of the entrants coming from outside South Africa and over 30% of the entrants coming from outside the Western Cape. The IAAF Gold Status elite field in 2015 consisted of 18 elite international athletes from six countries, with another 20 local elite athletes given a rare opportunity to race within a professional elite field on home soil.Over R700,000 was raised for charities 4 Spectator Zones were introduced where spectators were able to witness the race. The success of the event indicates it has the potential to become one of the world's must-run City Marathons, and by doing so it will join other races in making a significant difference to people throughout their respective host cities.

The potential impact is enormous, as has been revealed by other road races in recent years:

- In 2013, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in Australia attracted 28 000 participants, generating more than 63 000 visitor nights for the Queensland region, with the local govern- ment using the event as part of its commitment to increase annual overnight visitor expenditure to R350 billion by 2020

- In 2014, organisers of the New York Marathon, a World Marathon Majors race, released a report revealing the event had attracted over one million spectators and runners, gener- ating R6.4 billion for the host city and significantly boosting tourism, tax revenues and the economy

- Last year, the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend in Canada, a Silver Label event which is also centred around a standard marathon, attracted 49 439 participants, which resulted in R402 million in economic activity for the Province of Ontario

Having sent a team to observe the organisation of the prestigious London Marathon in April, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Executive Committee is aiming to capitalise on this valuable learning experience by taking further steps to grow the success and popularity of the event, they hope to increase their contribution to various sectors and the economy.

The weekend festival, held over two days with the marathon race taking centre stage on the Sunday, will again consist of a variety of options for participants:

- Sanlam Cape Town Marathon (42.2km) - Sanlam Cape Town 10km PEACE Run/Walk - Sanlam Cape Town 4.2km Fun Run - Sanlam Cape Town Peace Trail Runs (12km and 22km)

Entries for the 2016 race have opened. For more details, potential participants can visit www.capetownmarathon.com

De Vries and Maree Win Vans Surf Pro Classic Titles

Beyrick de Vries (uMhlanga) and Jordy Maree (Kalk Bay) clinched the men’s and junior men’s titles at the Vans Surf Pro Classic which was completed in epic 1.0 to 1.3 metre waves and ideal conditions at YoYo’s in Lamberts Bay on Sunday. The first World Surf league (WSL) events to be run north of Cape Town on the West coast of South Arica, the Vans Surf Pro Classic showcased the country’s best men and junior surfers as they chased a total prize-purse of R50 000 and invaluable points on the Qualifying Series and WSL Africa regional rankings.

The Final of the QS1, 000 rated men’s event saw Beyrick De Vries (uMhlanga) and Michael February (Kommetjie) go head to head in a spectacular high-flying air show. With a light crosswind blowing perfectly into the rights, both surfers punted manoeuvres above the lip on virtually every ride and each ended up counting a pair of eight-point scores. It was de Vries’ rides that impressed the judges more though, and he earned his first QS event title along with R12 000 in prize-money and 1,000 points when his 8.67 and 8.47 left him a slim 0.40 of a point ahead of February’s 8.23 and 8.07.

His points haul moved de Vries into the top 100 on the QS ranking after just two events this year, while February’s 750 points saw him jump into the top 30.

Vans Surf Pro Classic Final Results:

1. Beyrick de Vries (uMhlanga) 1,000 pts R12, 000 2. Michael February (Kommetjie) 750 pts R6, 000

031 303 2727 Bizhub Highveld Lions and GCB Awards

The Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) and bizhub Highveld Lions hosted the biggest ever joint awards function at the Wanderers Club . The event has grown in the past few years to include over and above the very important club level also other parts of the cricket pipeline and the bizhub Highveld Lions. Thabang Moroe, GCB President and bizhub Highveld Lions Chairman, values this event. “This evening annually gives us the opportunity to celebrate exceptional performances of all involved with the administration of the sport under these two bodies,” Moroe said.

Moroe also congratulated the awards recipients: “Each award is testament to hard work, many hours and a clear determination to succeed. A special thank you to the supporters and participants of our Amateur cricket section of the evening. We need this leg of our company to be as healthy as possible to ensure the future of the GCB.” Greg Fredericks, GCB and bizhub Highveld Lions Chief Executive Officer, sees this as a highlight on the event calendar. “I get the feeling that the GCB, Bidvest Wanderers and bizhub Highveld Lions have experienced a somewhat ‘Golden Season’ in the progress that we have made both on the field and off”. “These milestones should be celebrated and the gathering of players, administrators, coaches and supporters is the perfect opportunity to do so,” Fredericks commented.
